EPISODE 3
When Ledi Pedi opened his eyes he found himself laying on a bed in a small room.
The room was neat, but it had only a minimal of things in it. A couple of suitcases, an old wardrobe, a small shoe rack, and that was that.
On the walls were framed Biblical passages, and a framed photo of a younger version of the woman who had rescued him. She was standing beside a man, and they were holding each other and laughing happily.
He was now covered with a clean sheet, but he was still naked underneath. He turned his head to the side and looked at the window.
And he saw Kuman-Po-Guru staring at him from behind the window!
The demon’s eyes were mad with rage. Its mouth was opened, and its serrated teeth were bared in a terrible snarl. One of its hands had come through the window and was almost on Ledi’s chest.
And that was when Ledi Pedi let out one goddawful scream!
A moment later the door crashed open and the woman came in, glowing in the glory of her force-field.
Kuman-Po-Guru screeched with frantic fear and blasted away from the window, leaving Ledi staring with panic.
The woman stood at the foot of the bed and looked at him.
She had changed into a neat pink top and black jeans, her hair tied in a bun now, and he noticed then how beautiful she really was.
Hers was not the artificial make-up beauty. Her face was devoid of make-up, just a hint of gloss on her lips. Her eyes were big and incredibly clear, the planes of her face chiselled and gentle, giving her a classic beauty.
He looked at her, and he was breathing hard.
“You’re beautiful,” he murmured needlessly.
She raised her eyebrows without smiling.
“Is that why you screamed as if you were dying?”
He sighed heavily.
“No,” he said softly. “The demon was outside, almost touching me. Scared the living bejesus outta me.”
She looked worried now.
“Sorry about that,” she said gently. “You passed out. The taxi driver helped me bring you in when we got here. I called a neighbour, a nurse, to check you up because I was scared. She said you had come to but had fallen asleep, and so I was waiting for you to come up.”
“Sorry for the inconvenience, lady,” Ledi said solemnly. “I’m much grateful. My name is Ledi Pedi, by the way.”
“Yes, I know,” she said and turned toward the wardrobe. “You are all over the news, you and that politician lady, the one that went berserk and performed a striptease and a twerking scene for the world to see.”
“It wasn’t her,” Ledi said, sounding depressed.
She scowled.
“What?”
“The lady, the politician I mean,” Ledi said in a rush. “She was possessed by the demon. It caused her to humiliate herself. That’s its specialty. Kuman-Po-Guru makes people humiliate themselves badly, especially Christians who had backslidden.”
“This Kuman-whatever…the demon’s name?” she asked as she opened the wardrobe.
“Kuman-Po-Guru, yes. A very long time ago, when I was but a novice Unblind, a young girl was possessed by the demon. It made this girl…defecate publicly and even eat her own menses in a university classroom. It made her go naked in the street and masturbated herself with a bottle in the middle of the street.”
“Jesus!” the woman whispered, her hand flying to cover her heart.
“Yes, it’s that terrible a demon,” Ledi said. “My master then was Reverend Yoofi Dudu.”
She turned to him suddenly, her face shocked beyond comprehension.
“Reverend Yoofi?” she asked, incredulous. “From Awukugua?”
Ledi nodded.
“Yep,” he said carefully. “You know him?”
“Oh, yes, he’s more than a father!” she whispered. “He is my father’s good friend. I used to visit him during vacations when I was in school. I visit him once…wait, wait! You’re the Ledped aren’t you? Oh, yes, I recognized you now! He calls you Ledped, the son he never had! Seen you in countless photos with him. You were a pastor!”
“Now calm down!” Ledi said coldly. “I told you who I was, remember? You are the one who fled from me and almost led that damn demon kill me!”
She chuckled then, and soon laughter rolled out of her lips.
Her laughter was cool and so pleasant.
“What did you expect me to do when a man started speaking nonsense and dropped his cloth to reveal his nakedness?” she said amidst giggles. “Kiss you?”
“That wouldn’t be such a bad idea,” he murmured with a little smile of his own. “Still don’t know your name, though.”
Her back was turned to him as she opened the wardrobe, and she glanced over her shoulder and smiled again. It struck him that she indeed had a very beautiful smile.
“I’m Aba Bartels, widowed for five years now,” she said and turned to face him holding two trousers and three shirts. “Childless with an ailing father. Two sisters and two brothers, and I’m in-between them.”
“Oh, sorry about the ‘widowed’ part,” Ledi said, lifting a hand to indicate the framed photo on the wall. “Your…late husband?”
She smiled sadly.
“Yep, a true worker of the Lord,” she said. “Died five years ago, cancer. My father is also on admission, cancer. We need money for the surgery. I work as a teacher, but the money is not enough. Older brother works at the Eden Hotel. I went to see him today about father’s surgery costs, but he’s not willing to help raise that money. Seems to him it’s wasted money because Dad is old and would die eventually…the doctors are saying it, but I know he has a few years to go, I’m praying.”
She stopped speaking as a look of sheer sorrow crossed her face, and she bent her head and her body shook with tears, suddenly overcome by the feeling of helplessness she felt.
Without another word Ledi bounced off the bed and took her in his arms, hugging her tight.
“There, there, Aba,” he said kindly, gently. “It will be well. Trust me, I’ll help you foot the cost of your dad’s surgery. I’m blessed with wealth, dear, more than I can use. And I’ll help, seeing you helped me.”
Her face was pressed into his neck.
“I take it you’re still naked, Ledped?” she whispered, her arms around his waist.
“Mmmm, I believe I am, yes,” he murmured.
“And so I take it that whatever is pressing against my belly so persistently is an erection, right?”
Ledi suddenly chuckled with shame.
Darn!
He hadn’t felt that.
“Oh, shit!” he whispered with sudden shame.
She chuckled.
“I haven’t touched an erection since my husband died, Ledped,” she said carefully. “And I don’t aim to do that again since I don’t wanna get married again. So I placed some of his clothes on the bed. You two seem like the same build. I’m going back to the kitchen, and I hope you will be able to hide your erection in one of the trousers.”
“Oh, shit!” Ledi whispered and turned away from her with acute embarrassment.
She chuckled, shook her head, and then left the room.
