EPISODE 5
It is a Saturday.
Maa Adjoa does her laundry and cleans up the house as usual. She puts Kwamena’s things in one of the wardrobes in her room and makes a mental note to box them later and get them delivered to him.
She takes her bath afterwards and hurries to the hairdresser’s.
It is a big day for the ladies in the WhatsApp Chatroom. They have been planning to meet for some time now, and the day has finally dawned to meet the incredible ladies behind the keypads.
The event is simply meant for hanging out and having fun.
She arrives at the event grounds, an elaborated garden, thirty minutes early and is surprised some of the ladies are already around. She makes them out immediately since they had posted their pictures previously.
Quickly, she helps in setting up the venue by taking charge of the tables and chairs. They are soon joined by the rest and in all over thirty ladies from different backgrounds and cultures made it to the first-ever ladies’ hangout.
Maa Adjoa has not had fun like that ever in her life. It seems as if they’ve known each other for a long time. There is a karaoke stand for singing, indoor games, dancing and ‘pick and act’ from the stories they have read so far. They have even talked and matched some of the ladies to the incredible available guys on the platform. She enjoys every minute of the get-together, and by the time they part, Maa Adjoa is glad she is a part of such a lovely family.
Maa Adjoa is home now. She still has smiles on her face when she remembers the things that were said and done at the hangout.
She is glad she has been able to pick her life back piece by piece. It has not been easy when she is surrounded by friends and family who are in one relationship or another. She has gotten over feeling bad every time someone asked about Kwamena. Her parents have been helpful although surprised by the turn of events. Her mother has been very fond of Kwamena.
She admits the members of the Klever Magg Chatroom have contributed a great deal to make her get over the shock and pain of her heartbreak.
There is never a dull moment in the chatroom, that’s something she has grown used to. They have taught her to be tolerant and selfless. She has been used to getting her way all the time since she is an only daughter. The chatroom has really helped her to be considerate. Over the three months she’s been with them, she’s made incredible friends and enlarged her network with a great deal of good people.
Like any human institution, there are ups and downs in the chatroom but she has focused on only the good side. She gets the chance to even learn some useful lessons from members’ fights.
They’ve made her laugh, cry and most importantly they’ve helped her live.
Now, the pain in her heart is bearable. She has stopped crying and is back at work in full force.
She turns on the music player in the living room and listens to uplifting songs and as she awaits her favourite reality program which is airing in thirty minutes’ time, Kwamena’s call comes through.
Maa Adjoa stares at the phone with a mixture of confusion and trepidation. Feeling he might be calling unknowingly, she allows it to ring through. But he calls again.
On the third ring, however, she finally picks up the call.
“Hello,” she responds in a low voice.
“Hello Maj,” Kwamena replies and hesitates for a while. “Trust you are well.”
“Yes, how about you?” she asks softly and carefully.
“I’m good too. If it will not be too much trouble, I’d like to pass by and pick up my personal stuff from your place. I really need some urgent information from the hard drive I kept at your place. It is a good opportunity to return the spare key I still have,” he adds.
Maa Adjoa is quiet for a long time. She always knew this day will come but somehow, she’s a bit downhearted hearing him say it. She had played with the idea of returning his things but has not been able to carry it through. Of course, she is aware he needs most of his gadgets because they hold important information from his workplace.
“Are you there?” Kwamena asks, confused.
“Yea, you can pass by anytime during the weekend when I’m available.”
“Okay. I’ve got to go now. Take care of yourself then. Will pass by tomorrow if you are available and it’s okay for you.”
“Sure, I’ll be home.”
She ends the call and closes her eyes a while.
Suddenly, she feels she needs fresh air because for some reason she feels breathless as if something is choking her. Her heartbeats seem to be skipping.
She is already in shorts and a T-shirt so she brings out one of her sneakers and puts it on. She heads out for a walk without her phone. And soon she finds herself running instead.
When she can’t run anymore she stops to catch her breath.
The finality of things between her and Kwamena has really gotten to her but surprisingly, she didn’t feel like crying.
She walks back to her apartment and brings out a box from the storage room and dumps Kwamena’s belongings in it. She makes sure she has parked everything and drags the box to the living room. Maa Adjoa puts it in the corner closest to the door. She fights back the memories of her time with Kwamena and tells herself it is permanently over.
She takes a long shower afterwards and turns in for the night.
As usual, she goes through her unread messages and answers those she can. She sees that Nathan sent a message over two hours ago.
Nathan is another friend from the chatroom who has been extremely good to her. He has always kept an eye on her even though she has not told him anything about her broken heart. He’s been more than a true friend. He has even gone to extreme trouble to send her a flower on her birthday.
It is the sweetest thing anybody has done for her. The flowers had been sent all the way from Kumasi and have arrived at her doorstep just as day broke. The simple words, Happiest birthday, Beautiful inscribed in the card attached to the flower really warmed her heart.
The chatroom members surprised her with birthday wishes that day. When she woke up that day to see her picture as the group’s icon, she really understood all the fuss about her intro including her picture. It is indeed a pleasant surprise.
She looks at the time. It is not too late so she responds to his greeting.
NATHAN
How have you been?
MAA ADJOA
Very well, yourself?
NATHAN
Good ass well. What’s up today?
MAA ADJOA
Had an incredible time with my lady friends. Went jogging and now ready to close my eyes. How was your day?
NATHAN
Nothing much. Cleaning mostly.
MAA ADJOA
That means you are expecting someone special.
NATHAN
Why do you say that?
MAA ADJOA
Most guys don’t clean up unless a special girlfriend is coming.
NATHAN
Lol. That’s a lie, at least with me. I love clean places.
MAA ADJOA
Nathan, I have five brothers. I know what I’m talking about. When is she arriving?
NATHAN
Tomorrow.
MAA ADJOA
Haha. So that’s why you can’t sleep too.
NATHAN
Naaa. I’m just a late sleeper. I read mostly in the nights when everything is quiet.
MAA ADJOA
I see. Let me leave you then, enjoy reading and a good sleep. All the best with the special lady too.
NATHAN
Thank you. Do you know what I can give her as a gift?
MAA ADJOA
It depends on what she likes. I don’t know her so I can’t really guess. You should not try too much to impress her. An over-exaggeration wouldn’t auger well for you if she’s the type who doesn’t like that kind of lifestyle, just be yourself. Honesty is key.
NATHAN
Thanks. I’m kind of nervous though. This is the first time she’s coming to see me in my house and I’m afraid she will be disappointed or something.
MAA ADJOA
If you have been completely honest with her, you don’t have to worry. She already has an idea of what to expect.
NATHAN
I’ve always told the truth. I don’t lie.
MAA ADJOA
That’s good. You have nothing to worry about then.
NATHAN
I’m kind of scared she will not like my place. It’s not so bad though.
MAA ADJOA
Nathan, is this your first girlfriend? You are behaving like a school boy.
NATHAN
No, she’s not my first but I really like this one. I don’t want to mess up.
MAA ADJOA
You won’t mess up. Just let your heart guide you.
NATHAN
Thanks. I think I can sleep now. Sleep well!
MAA ADJOA
Sweet dreams!
