EPISODE 6
Maa Adjoa is sitting in the front row at church.
The preacher takes the microphone after the song ministrations.
“Today, I’m preaching on FORGIVENESS.
FORGIVENESS is the act of pardoning an offender; ceasing to feel resentment toward him because of his offense and giving up all claim to a reward. The Hebrew verb for forgive is sa·lachʹ. The Greek term a·phiʹe·mi literally means “let go off.
In the olden days, according to God’s law given to the nation of Israel, in order for a person who had sinned against God or against his fellowman to have his sins forgiven, he first had to rectify the wrong as the Law prescribed and then, in most cases, present a blood offering to God. Actually, the blood of animal sacrifices could not take away sins and give the individual a perfectly clean conscience that is why the new covenant made it possible by Jesus Christ’s ransom sacrifice came into being. It offers true forgiveness for sins.
To seek and receive forgiveness a person must acknowledge his sin, recognize that it is an offense against God or his fellowman, confess it, have a deep heartfelt sorrow for the wrong done, and have a determination to turn from such a course or practice. He must do what he can to right the wrong or damage done. Then he must pray to God, asking for forgiveness on the basis of Christ’s ransom sacrifice.
Forgiving others for personal offences, regardless of the number of times involved, is a Christian requirement. God’s forgiveness is not extended toward those who refuse to forgive others. However, even when serious wrongdoing leads to expulsion of the offender from the church, that person may in due time be accorded forgiveness if he proves that he is truly repentant. Yet, Christians are not required to forgive those who practice malicious, wilful sin with no repentance. Such people become God’s enemies.
It is proper to pray for God’s forgiveness in behalf of others, even for an entire church. Let’s look at some examples of people who prayed in behalf of others.
Moses did so respecting the nation of Israel, confessing their national sin and asking forgiveness, and he was favourably heard.
Solomon, at the dedication of the temple, prayed that God might forgive his people when they sinned and then turned back from their wrong course.
Ezra acted representatively in confessing publicly the sins of the repatriated Jews. His heartfelt prayer and exhortation had the result that the people took action in order to receive Jehovah’s forgiveness.
James encouraged the spiritually sick to call for the older men of the congregation to pray over him, and “if he has committed sins, it will be forgiven him.”
But, there is a sin that does incur death, sin against the holy spirit, a deliberate practice of sin for which there is no forgiveness.
I pray that we would all cultivate a forgiving spirit as we expect forgiveness from our Creator.”
Maa Adjoa finds the sermon really intriguing and personally applicable.
She examines herself to see if her heart is full of resentment towards Kwamena especially, but fortunately finds out that her heart is at peace with what happened between them.
She is not holding anything against him anymore.
Maa Adjoa returns to her home after a stop at the groceries for some supplies. She cooks her favourite food when she gets home and eats. Then, she goes to lie down for a quick nap after catching up on some shows on the television.
The melodious ding of her doorbell wakes her.
She walks to the door and enquires sleepily who it is and Kwamena answers from the other side.
Maa Adjoa opens the door.
Kwamena, looking smart in black jeans trouser, orange Lacoste T-Shirt and very colourful sneakers, is standing tall and proud at her doorstep.
She lets him in and closes the door.
He hugs her briefly, holding on a bit longer and then takes a seat.
Maa Adjoa realizes she didn’t feel the usual notch in her tummy when he hugged her and that convinces her she has found her peace.
“My father says I should always go to a pretty woman’s house with a gift.” He says and hands her a box of chocolate he has painstakingly wrapped and secured with red ribbons.
“Thanks,” Maa Adjoa takes the box and sets it on the table in the centre of the living-room.
Kwamena takes the remote and flips the channel to the sports station after politely asking if he could watch the UEFA Championship match. His team wins and he is over the moon with joy.
He hugs her again and in the excitement his lips suddenly hover above Maa Adjoa’s lips. They stare at each other for a split second. Maa Adjoa suddenly sees what he’s trying to do and takes a step back.
Kwamena apologizes quickly and sits down.
“I miss us sometimes. You are in my thoughts most of the time. Always wondering if you are okay. I’m happy to see you today. Do you have some food? I’m famished.” He asks.
“Yeah, some fried plantain and beans.”
“Wow, would really like some, if it’s not a bother.”
Maa Adjoa goes to the kitchen and returns with a tray for Kwamena. She sets it on the dinning-table for him. He sits down and begs her to keep her company.
She sits with him whiles he eats. Surprisingly, she realizes she doesn’t feel too bad about him. She doesn’t crave for his touch or anything else. Her heart has found peace and that gladdens her heart.
She helps him carry the box to his car and bids him farewell. They hug briefly, and he is history.
She uses the rest of the night to sort her mails, WhatsApp and SMS.
Maa Adjoa makes sure she deletes everything about Kwamena from all her accounts.
She joins members in the chatroom for a while and enjoys the fun.
She chats with Princess Derbie, another good friend from the Chatroom as usual, and goes to bed happy and relieved.
