EPISODE 10
Maa Adjoa and Lexis are simply inseparable now.
Six months has passed already. She has had the best times of her life.
During the period she has learnt that Lexis’ parents are in the real estate business and own a number of properties including the one she lives in.
They are trying their best to get Lexis to take over the business and so they had encouraged him to come back home and stay for at least a year to see how it goes. He has agreed on condition that he will stay if he finds something worthwhile to do as a movie producer.
And in Maa Adjoa he has found something much more than ‘worthwhile’.
He had found his breath!
Maa Adjoa is all dressed and waiting in her living room.
Her doorbell chimes shortly and she opens the door to find Lexis standing there, looking incredibly appealing. He is in a black suit and a pink shirt which is unbuttoned a few notches from his neckline exposing the beautiful hair on his chest with impeccable shining black shoes to complete his looks.
He looks at Maa Adjoa and a lump of desire forms in his throat.
Lexis swallows hard. He has not seen so much beauty anywhere. Maa Adjoa’s exquisite figure is enhanced by the sleeveless hot pink dress she has stepped into. The high neck adds a special touch to her elegance. She has a blue clutch in hand which matches her designer shoes.
Yea, he knows about women fashion because of his mom and cousin who invest a fortune in clothes, bags and jewellery.
He stares at her for a while without saying anything.
“You look amazing! Do I look presentable?” Maa Adjoa breaks the spell.
“Did you say presentable? A dying man will spring back into good health at the sight of you. You are really beautiful, Adjoa!”
The sincerity in his voice melts her heart instantly and she fights the urge to throw her arms around his neck and kiss him passionately.
“We should get going before I change my mind. The way you are looking I’m tempted to keep you all to myself this night.”
“You know I’ll love that. Time spent with you is never wasted but you know your mom will be very disappointed if we don’t show. I’m sure she’s made sacrifices to host me tonight and since this is my first time of meeting your folks, there should be no excuses.”
“You are right about that, knowing my mom, she must have worked everyone to the bone because of this night. Let’s be on our way, then.”
He holds her by the hand and guides her to his car.
The drive from Airport to East Legon hills takes shorter than expected since there is minimum traffic.
The doorman ushers them into the huge house.
Maa Adjoa is speechless at the sight of the beautiful architecture at play. There is a twin storey building on the compound with a vast surface area for greens and trees. The drive-through is bordered by small coconut trees and a swimming pool at one side and an event garden of sorts at the other side.
The deck of the swimming pool is roofed to fit the shape of the pool with pool chairs and dive boards fixed at vantage points.
Well-trimmed flowers and grass add special touch to the environment. There is a barbecue stand between the two huge buildings. There are chairs arranged in an L-shape directly opposite the barbecue stand.
And there is an open gym close to the swimming pool.
The place really looks like a paradise.
Lexis holds her hand and guides her to the living-area. Maa Adjoa is not disappointed in the least by the display of creative decorations and gadgets.
Lexis’ parents join them and heartily welcome Maa Adjoa to their humble abode. Dinner is served shortly after their arrival and Maj is guided by Lexis to the dinning-room.
Maa Adjoa is enchanted. The room has whites all over. The walls and curtains are plain white with beautiful artwork fixed at vantage points.
The table is round and made of pure wood. It has a revolving piece fixed to the table to make it easy for people around the table to get access to whatever they want without standing up or asking someone to pass on to you.
The four chairs around the table are beautifully designed with the backs shaped like flowers.
A moderate chandelier hangs right in the middle of the ceiling casting a soft glow on the table.
There are four candle-stands in the four corners of the room with perfumed candles burning on them. All the other fittings and storage items in the hall is white with the gold cutlery pieces and dark brown wood for the furniture.
Lexis’ Dad takes his seat and his mom takes the seat to his left. Lexis and Maa Adjoa takes the remaining two seats and Maa Adjoa finds herself sitting directly opposite Lexis’ mom. The aroma from the steaming hot meals suddenly makes Maa Adjoa hungry.
Mrs. Bamford serves her husband and waits for Lexis to serve himself. She pleads with Maa Adjoa to dish her food before everybody else but she politely insists she will dish hers after everybody.
Lexis’ mom finally gives up when she sees Maa Adjoa is entrenched in her position and gladly takes her food.
She secretly admires Maa Adjoa for the kind gesture. She is sure she will make a good wife for his son. It is not because of the single kind action on Maa Adjoa’s part that has warmed her heart but she sees how she looks at her son and she can tell she adores him unconditionally.
As for her son, she has gathered from several conversations they have had that he is head over heels in love with the beautiful yet cultured lady sitting across from her.
All she needed to see was if the lady loved him back and looking at her right now, she sees the glow of love in her heart for her only child.
They eat in silence for a while. Maa Adjoa is tensed and keeps glancing at Lexis from time to time.
“Relax, Adjoa! This is home as long as you want it. I must say you look really good in person.” Mr. Bamford, Lexis’ father, says.
“Thank you, sir, I’m humbled to be here.”
“You know, your actions remind me so much of someone I know.” He adds with a smile and turns his head to look at his wife.
“Really, who can that be?” Mrs. Bamford questions sarcastically.
“You know, when I met Fedora, now my adorable wife, she was just like you. Cool, calm and collected. When I took her to see my parents she behaved like it was a job interview. She was really nervous that day and not even my silent glances and assurances will ease her nerves.
Granted, my mom was really hard on her the first time she met her so I could understand her dilemma but you have nothing to fear. We are already bought when it comes to you, dear. You only have to hear what Lexis says about you and you would understand the glow in his heart. I think he likes you a whole lot but he is …!”
“I’m right here Dad. I can tell her I like her so stop behaving like I’m not here.” Lexis says calmly, and they all laugh lightly.
By the time dinner is over Maa Adjoa has filled the Bamford’s in on her background, where her parents and siblings are and all the other little but vital information about her education, aspirations and fears.
Lexis is pleased his parents openly confess their feelings about Maa Adjoa and from the way things stand, he will not have any problems from them when he moves a step forward with his relationship with her.
His mom had been his biggest worry since she tends to be a little choosy in everything but to see her warm up to Maa Adjoa the way she is doing, is something Lexis has not seen before.
“Come here little darling, let me take you round the house my wife and I designed. I do have your permission, son?”
“Sure Dad, don’t poison her against me though. She’s my life!” Lexis supplies, smiling.
Maa Adjoa leaves with Curtis’ dad and Lexis finds himself alone with his mom. He dreads she is going to say something negative about his guest for the night by the way she is carrying herself.
He thinks she is smiling too much and he does not like it when she gets like that. It is not like whatever she has to say will change anything, he cannot un-love Maa Adjoa Amoateng even if he wanted to.
“That’s a jackpot you got there Lexie. You shouldn’t waste too much time dating her. I know it helps to get to know her better but I get the feeling she’s the one for you. She loves you, I know that. I see that and I hope you see that too.”
Lexis sighs with relief when his mother’s words fall on his ears. It is as if the two of them are thinking on the same lines. All through dinner, he was battling with himself because a large part of him wanted to propose to her right there and then but the small part of him thought he will put Adjoa on the spot too much and she might be forced to accept even though her heart might not be in it.
Lexis’ dad comes back to the living area with a smiling Maa Adjoa. She seems to be smiling about something his dad has said about Lexis when he was far younger. He is not bothered about whatever he might have said, he is just happy his parents and Maa Adjoa get on so well.
At least, he has jumped one of his life’s hurdles. They bid his parents farewell and a good night and head back home. His mom had insisted they stayed the night but he had stood his ground.
He drives straight to their apartments and takes her to her door.
“Your parents are really incredible and amazing people, I had a good time.”
“I think your good energy affected them. You are not unlikeable. You made me very proud today. I love you so much!”
He pulls her close and kisses her.
She likes it. She receives him without a care in the world.
When the heat from the passion is getting out of hand, Maa Adjoa steps back and just stares at the guy standing inches away from her and teaching her heart to sing a different kind of love song. A song she has no control over. A song she can never tire of.
And a song that is both beautiful and soothing.
She knows she loves him but what if he leaves her after she gives her body to him?
Maa Adjoa’s mind plays the ‘what if” game with her for a while. She is all ready for him. His voice, his touch, his kisses, that is all she needs but her sub-conscious mind is fighting with her not to give in.
Her mind is urging her to learn from her mistakes but not to repeat them. One thing is for sure, she is aware that if he walks away from her life, even now that they have not known each other sexually, she will be very shattered, very lost and very miserable.
She is never going to be able to get over Lexis.
She knows he is the one for her, the man whose rib had moulded her!
They gaze at each other for a long time in silence each trying to tone down the rising desire their closeness is fanning.
“I think we should call it a night.” Maa Adjoa breaks the silence.
“If that’s what you want, you can trust me, you know. I won’t do anything you are not ready for. I love you that much. It is very obvious I want you more and more each day. All it takes is seeing you, your smile, your gentle lips, your voice and I’m on a different planet. I’m really in love with you, I want to know what you feel for me.”
“Isn’t it apparent? The laugh in my eyes, the waltz in my walk, the confidence, the hope, everything new in my life is because of you. You light up my life, Lexis. You are the angel God sent down to touch my life and your touch burns out every bad memory I’ve ever had. I love you, Lexis. I’m afraid I love you too much and it’s scary sometimes.”
“Let me love you, Adjoa. I want you in my life, that goes without saying.”
“I will be in it for as long as you want me to, Lex. Yes, I want to be in your life, sharing your dream and all.”
“Then its settled, you are permanently in my life.”
Maa Adjoa smiles and turns to open her door, then it clicks.
“Did you say permanently?”
“Yes, from now till forever. Would you like that?”
Maa Adjoa throws her arms around him and hugs him tightly.
“Off course, I will love that.”
Kisses her deeply, his heart singing the one song he only can understand.
Maa Adjoa’s head spins with the depth of her love for him as his tongue works at bringing her nothing but sweetness.
