EPISODE 9
Lexis is at her doorstep on the stroke of seven in the evening. That really gets him some points with Maa Adjoa. Punctuality is something she takes very seriously.
They take off since she is also ready for their official date.
They go to the movies and is not disappointed by the movie although she is of the view that the producer could have done better.
Lexis insists on grabbing a bite after the movie and she willingly obliges. She likes his company tremendously, she is beginning to realize, and is glad for a chance to extend their time together.
They reach the restaurant a while later.
Lexis is his best self and treats her like she’s the only woman in the world. He seems to be on top of the world for some reason. They walk side by side to the entrance and Maa Adjoa is smiling at something Lexis is saying. They reach the landing and begin to descend the stairs to the restaurant. Half way through, Maa Adjoa feels a hand grab her from behind.
She stops and turns sharply and comes face to face with Kwamena.
Maa Adjoa looks at him for a while without saying anything. She pulls her hand slowly from his grip and wonders why she didn’t feel anything by his touch.
It hasn’t been so in the past. All she had needed was a simple touch and she had melted in his arms, craving for a kiss and then his warmth inside her.
It is that moment that, looking at him face to face, she realizes she doesn’t love him anymore. She doesn’t want him to touch her and surprisingly, she doesn’t want Lexis to think that she isn’t available.
Lexis has stopped too. He looks from Kwamena to Adjoa and his heart misses a beat. He takes the brief moments they stand just staring at each other for something else.
“It’s so good to see you, Maj.” Kwamena says and tries to hug her.
Maa Adjoa takes a step back unconsciously. Trying her best not to hurt Lexis because she has seen the sad look in his eyes.
“Good to see you too, Kwamena!” She responds.
Lexis tries to move away to give them some privacy but Maa Adjoa stops him.
“This is Kwamena, a childhood friend. We were…”
Just then Kwamena’s girlfriend, who has stepped into the washroom on their way out, joins them.
“I’m good to go champ!” May-Glory says rather rudely, looking from her man to his ex-lover.
Maa Adjoa chuckles and moves on, offering her hand to Lexis.
She is surprised she didn’t feel any pain in her heart at the sight of Kwamena and his lover. All she wants to do is go away with Lexis. Kwamena does not matter anymore. It is only then that she realizes she has some strong feelings for Lexis. She realizes what he thinks of her matters and she does not want to hurt him in any way. It looks to her that her broken heart is mended after all.
Lexis takes her hand reluctantly and descends the stairs with her. He suddenly feels threatened by the brief space of time Maj and Kwamena had shared. It is like they both froze when their eyes met and to him that only meant one thing. He wonders if they are a couple or they are separated by a misunderstanding.
Maa Adjoa likes the warmth that is passing through her just by Lexis holding her hand in his. She wonders if it’s too soon to fall in love again this hard.
Lexis takes her to a table, draws the chair for her and waits still she’s seated before taking a seat.
He goes to the counter with a code for their order.
He comes to their table and take a seat without saying a word.
“How did you find the movie?” Maa Adjoa tries to break the ice that has suddenly poured on her date.
“Nice story line. Producer could have done much better though. Looks to me he tried too much to cut down on the props for the story, and that took a little bit away from it. On the whole, it’s a good story. “he replies. “I’d like to read the story though. I’ll be grateful if I get the link to the story later on.”
“Sure, would gladly give you all the links even to the chatroom.”
They eat in silence the whole time after that.
Maa Adjoa feels Lexis is judging her by thinking the worst of her and that hurts for some reason. She looks around sadly and wish she will be home instead. The issue of her ex has never come up in their conversations and now he is making her feel like she cannot be trusted. It is not even like they are a couple just yet and there he sits judging her just because of Kwamena.
She asks Lexis to take her home since she is getting angrier just by thinking he is judging her.
Lexis takes her back home soon after they are done eating. He does not say much on their way back home.
He parks the car in the parking lot of the apartment and helps her out.
Maa Adjoa feels butterflies in her stomach when he holds her hand to help her out. She closes her eyes to savour the moment. The feeling is more than just butterflies, she feels like Lexis has brought the whole zoo to her.
He walks her to her door and bids her good night.
He turns to leave but Maa Adjoa holds him back.
“Please, don’t leave like this. I had a great time but obviously you didn’t. I’m sorry if I did or said anything to ruin your time with me. I miss your smile, please.”
“I need to go. Have a peaceful night.”
“If you say so. Good night.”
Maa Adjoa releases his hand and turns away.
She inserts her key and opens her door. Tears have formed in her eyes by the time she enters her apartment. She shuts the door and sits in the dark in her living – room.
A knock comes on the door but she does not answer.
Her phone dings. She takes it out of the purse and goes to her WhatsApp messages.
“I’m at your door. Can I see you?” Lexis has posted.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea. It’s best we don’t see each other anymore. Since it’s obvious you don’t care what I feel. Just let me be,” she replies.
“Please open up, please. Let me apologize in person,” he speaks out to her hearing. “I freaked out when I saw the way you two looked at each other. I felt you used me to make him jealous and that really got to me.” Lexis continues.
“Just go away.” Maa Adjoa retorts.
“Please open up, I’m begging you.” Lexis says and waits. Maa Adjoa neither speaks nor opens the door.
Lexis waits but still nothing happens.
“I’m not leaving without talking to you, Adjoa and we can’t talk like this. Please open up. I won’t come inside if you don’t want me to.” Lexis insists.
She unlocks the door after a long while when she realizes Lexis will not go away. She goes back to sit down, puts on the television and selects a channel.
Lexis walks in a little disoriented. He does not understand why he feels like his heart is gasping for air. He has never imagined falling this hard for any woman and the worst part is he is not even sure what she feels for him.
And so he stands in the middle of the living-room undecided. Lexis does not know if he should sit or just continue standing.
Maa Adjoa pretends she’s not seen his frustrations. She’s burning with so much anger yet she is not sure what is making her that angry. Is it the fact that she finds the young man standing right in her apartment very attractive or is it because deep down in her heart she is craving for his touch and kiss?
Is it the urge she’s fighting to run into his arms and feel his heartbeat quickening by their closeness?
She tells her brain to stop, stop, stop. She cannot afford to fall in love with this guy this completely. And she has no clue if he is in a relationship or not. They’ve not delved into each other’s private lives yet. They have just enjoyed each other’s company and now she feels really shaken because it looks like he wants to cut links with her.
“Can I sit down?” Lexis finally manages to say.
“Only if what you have to say will take time.” she replies without taking her eyes off the TV.
Lexis takes a seat facing Maa Adjoa. She keeps her eyes on the TV.
“I know I behaved childishly a while back but I don’t know what’s happening to me. I like being with you, and I like watching you. When you are with me I feel complete. When we are apart, there’s this void and emptiness that surrounds me. I see myself thinking of you most times and I’ll give anything just to see you smile, hear your voice, breathe the air around you which is scented by your unique perfume. What I’m trying to say is…” Lexis pauses when he’s not sure Adjoa is listening since her eyes are still fixed on the TV even though the volume is turned way down., and
Maa Adjoa looks at him just then. Their eyes meet and hold for a while.
“I don’t understand why you were so cold to me. One minute I was having the time of my life and the next minute I’m fighting not to shed tears. Why Lexis, why?” She asks, very frustrated.
“I was jealous, plain and simple and I’m sorry. I felt you were using me to get to that guy and I didn’t like it one bit. Maj, I took it for granted that you are unattached and obviously, I think I am wrong. Please do forgive me.”
She looks at him with her mouth open, her shock all over her face. She is aware of the moments of awareness that has passed between them every time they are together.
Maa Adjoa knows that she wants more from the guy sitting across from her than the jogs and few outings they get to share from time to time. She has held back because she wasn’t so sure how he felt about her and now his jealousy and discomfort at just the thought that she is for someone else makes her take a second look at him. “He loves me, oh he loves me too!” Maa Adjoa shouts in her heart.
“Jealous? Why will you feel jealous, if I may ask?” Maa Adjoa teases. She needs to hear it from him. He has to say the words she has been waiting to hear.
“Isn’t it obvious? I love you, Maa Adjoa. I love you a whole bunch.”
She looks up at him as he closes the gap between them. He pulls her up and crushes her to his chest in a hug. They break up and just look into each other’s eyes. They lose track of time as his lips descends on hers.
The kiss is the sweetest any of them have ever experienced. She kisses him back without holding anything back.
They are both breathless when they pull apart.
Tears shimmer in her eyes.
“Oh, Lexis!” she whispers. “I could feel my heart breaking. I didn’t realize just how much I’ve fallen in love with you this short time. You make my heart sing, Lexis, and it is only you in my heart right now.”
He kisses her again and again. Maa Adjoa has to finally pull away to stop herself from giving in totally to the guy who is standing before her now.
“I think we should call it a night. I had a good time tonight.” She says, still trying to control the strong urge to run into his arms and give him her all, body and soul.
“Good night, Adjoa. Have a good time too. That buffoon almost ruined it.”
“Next time you feel jealous or insecure about something that concerns me, please talk to me and don’t think for me.”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
Adjoa sees him off to the door. He kisses her again and grudgingly begins to walk away with his smiling face to her.
He gestures for her to go inside and she obliges without argument fully aware that if she does not move from where she is right that moment to her room, she will end up with him in his room doing only one thing.
Maa Adjoa changes into her night dress and brings out her phone from the drawer. She sees a lot of threads from the chatroom but decides she will not read, at least not that day. She also sees three missed calls from Faustie and a post from her.
Maa Adjoa lies on her bed and puts a call through to her friend of many years.
There is no response.
She puts the phone back in the drawer by her bedside and closes her eyes, smiling as if remembering something pleasant. She hears a ding on her phone and she takes the phone from the bedside drawer.
FAUSTIE
Good evening girlfriend. Was just checking up on you.
MAA ADJOA
That’s so thoughtful of you. I’m grateful for someone like you in my life.
FAUSTIE
So, what did you do today?
MAA ADJOA
Went to the movies.
FAUSTIE
Alone?
MAA ADJOA
No, with Lexis
FAUSTIE
Lexis, as in the jogger? When did you two graduate from jogging to going to movies, lol?
MAA ADJOA
Tonight, lol
Do you think its too soon to fall in love again?
FAUSTIE
Love has no time table, my dear. It happens when it happens. Are you melting for this guy already, lol?
MAA ADJOA
I think so, F and it scares me. I like him a lot and I find myself thinking about him when we are not together and wishing so much to see him. Do you think it’s a rebound?
FAUSTIE
A rebound? Are you still crying over Kwamena? It only becomes a problem if you are using the jogger to make Kwamena jealous. Is that what you are doing?
MAA ADJOA
No. the truth is I don’t even think of Kwamena when I’m with Lexis. He’s such fun to be with. I only see him and no one else. I chanced into Kwamena today and all I wanted was to get away and be with Lexis. I’m melting, F. I’m melting for Lexis.
FAUSTIE
Well, if you feel right about it, go for it. Just be careful that’s all and you know what I’m talking about.
MAA ADJOA
You naughty girl. Can you be really careful in love? I think that is not possible, girlfriend. Thanks for the advice though, I know you mean well.
FAUSTIE
Wish you the best. And he better not misbehave or he will have me to deal with.
MAA ADJOA
He won’t. Don’t worry about that. He is a gentleman.
FAUSTIE
If you say so. Good night dearie!
MAA ADJOA
Good night!
