EPISODE 9
Roselyn was alarmed when she saw Nana Ekua writhing in so much pain when she was wheeled in. She knew she wasn’t due quite yet.
“What happened, Nana?” she asked.
Samba narrated what happened and she hurriedly examined her. She assured Nana Ekua that nothing was amiss with the baby but detained her for observation.
Samba felt so sorry for Nana Ekua.
This was the time she needed someone she loved around. He thought of rushing to tell Kobby but decided against it. He drew a chair and sat by her bed. And then he took her hands into his and told her jokes and a story which relaxed her.
Nana Ekua was drifting into sleep when Samba’s phone in his pocket rang.
He remembered his promise to Renee and hurried outside to answer it.
“Hello.”
“Where in the name of God are you? I’ve been waiting for ages,” Renee said, angrily.
“I am caught up in something I can’t talk about right now. I will definitely pick you up soon,” distraught Samba managed to say.
“Jesus Christ, what has come over you? You want me to wait here when you are not even sure of the time you’ll come and pick me! What you are doing must be very important indeed for you to stand me up like this,” Renee said, her anger still sizzling.
“Look, I will explain everything when I see you. I have to go now. See you soon,” he said and ended the call.
He always hated the possessive trait in Renee.
She expected him to drop everything for her and right now he couldn’t do that. He went back into the hospital to see Dr. Roselyn scribing something in a file she was holding.
Nana Ekua seemed relaxed and drowsy.
“Is she going to be alright, doctor?” Samba asked.
“Yes, she would be fine. I have given her something for the pain and to put her to sleep. She needs a lot of sleep and I suspect she’s been stressing herself lately. For that reason, I am going to keep her here till she delivers. The maximum waiting time should be a month,” the doctor explained.
“Well, in that case I will go and get her things. I think Mansa would know what she would need. And I will try to notify her mother too. But are you sure she would be alright?” Samba said, running his hands through his hair
“Like I told you, she would be fine. She is in very capable hands. But if you are not sure, you can come by later in the evening to see her,” the doctor said.
“Okay, I will go get her things. I will be back soon,” Samba said and left.
He called Nana Ekua’s mother and explained everything that had happened. Nana Ekua’s mother wanted to come right away but Samba impressed upon her not to panic for her daughter was safe. After much talk and convincing from Samba, Mrs. Coleman understood and promised to set off first thing the next morning.
Samba made the journey to Nana Ekua’s house in no time. Mansa, evidently worried, met him at the gate and enquired about her Madam.
He assured her that she was alright and explained that the doctor thought it was best to keep her in the hospital to keep an eye on her.
He asked her to gather a few things for him to take to her. Mansa entered Nana Ekua’s bedroom and was shortly back with a suitcase and a basket.
“Are you sure you’ve taken everything?” Samba asked.
“Yes, I helped Madam put them together. Everything she would need is in there,” Mansa assured him.
He helped her with the suitcase and they took them to his car.
He dropped them off at the reception when he got to the hospital and was told Nana Ekua’s was asleep.
Renee was angry now.
Samba was still not back and Alby was making things harder for her. She could not fathom how Samba could make her wait for that long. To make matters worse he was not picking her calls. The fact that he left after receiving a call made his behaviour more suspicious.
“I don’t think that guy is coming for you. I doubt if he loves you. He is only interested in your body. How on earth could he make you wait for him like this? I suggest you forget about him and let one of our drivers take you home. It seems your sweetheart has stood you up big time,” Alby taunted.
“You don’t know why he’s not here. For all you may know he might be in some kind of trouble needing help. You can’t jump to conclusions like that. Until I hear what kept him, I won’t judge him. I believe he loves me so please don’t talk like that,” Renee replied.
“Guys are all the same, you know. They are born cheaters. I bet he is with another woman right now doing God knows what,” Alby said with conviction.
“Guys like him are too smooth to be trusted completely, my friend. You should read the signs on the wall. This is not a good sign at all,” Alby continued.
Renee was quiet. Much as she was angry with Samba for going MIA on her, she would not jump into conclusions. She was sure something was wrong or he was just bored. She knew he did not like Alby much.
Renee was at her sixes.
“Are you sure he would do something like that?” she asked.
“Most men are like dogs. They are capable of doing that and more. They can’t commit to one person especially when they see a woman in her “heat”. For them every beautiful woman is in her ‘heat’ so they would do anything to bed her. It is only a few who fight the urge and remain faithful to their partners.
I know a genuine lover when I see one, and Samba does not strike me as one. I suggest you leave without him because I can bet he’s forgotten all about you this very moment. Have you thought that maybe he is with the woman who was with him at the restaurant? Don’t forget he left after someone called him,” Alby continued to confuse her friend.
Renee looked at her watch.
She had been waiting for more than four hours. What in the name of God was going on with him? He seemed distracted when she finally got through to him. Could Alberta be right about him? Was there something they were both not telling her? She pondered over these questions.
“Alby, you know you’ve never told me why you don’t like Samba? I know you tolerate him for my sake,” Renee asked her friend.
“What gave you that idea? I am happy for you but I don’t think that guy is worth your trust. I have this strong conviction that he is not for real. You’ve been my closest friend ever since we were kids. And though we were separated for a while I never stopped caring about you.
You are my only true friend and I don’t want anything bad to happen to you. I simply don’t trust that guy. Look at the way he treated you at the restaurant the other day. He was with someone, wasn’t he?
I don’t like it when men behave like the whole world revolves around them. Please don’t say that I don’t like Samba. I am just being protective of you. You are like a sister to me and I wouldn’t like to see you get hurt,” Alby stated.
“Do you know something, I don’t?” Renee asked.
“Not yet but I can find out for you. I can dig out all there is to know if you want me to.” Alby explained, a little angry.
“No, that wouldn’t be necessary. Are you sure that’s all it is, you protecting me?” Renee asked again.
“Why? Is it that you don’t believe me anymore? I have told you I don’t hate the guy. All I am asking is for you to be a bit more cautious until you know he is for real, that’s all. Is it a sin to worry about a friend?” Alby retorted. “I promise not to say a thing about you and your Mr. Goodie Goodie ever again.”
She got up angrily and walked to the dinning area.
Renee walked to her and apologised for her behaviour.
“Please don’t take this personal. I guess I am tired and confused. It’s late; I think I will head home now. In case he stops over tell him I got tired of waiting for him. I will see you tomorrow.”
“I will tell him that and more if he shows his face here. You don’t deserve to be treated like this. You deserve to be treated like the queen you are. Let me get a driver to take you home.”
“I’d rather take a taxi, thanks. See you tomorrow,” Renee said and left.

The drive to Alby’s house from the hospital was long and frustrating.
Samba got caught up in a traffic jam. He called Alby’s home on his way over to find out if Renee was still at her place when Renee did not pick his calls. Alberta confirmed that Renee was still waiting for him.
He finally arrived at Alby’s place and rang the doorbell. He waited for a long time before the gateman let him in. Then he parked his car and walked up to the house. The door to the main sitting room flew open before he could get to it. And what met his eyes was unbelievable. A smiling Alberta stood in the doorway in a transparent negligĂ©e.
For a moment, he thought he was imagining it.
“Where is Renee? Please tell her I have come to get her,” he said in a rush.
“Why, aren’t you at least coming in? The food we cooked for you is still warm, you know,” Alberta said sweetly.
Samba didn’t understand why she was being so nice to him especially after what had happened. He reluctantly walked past her to the main living room. He saw that the table was nicely laid and he smiled to himself, convinced that Renee was not that angry with him after all otherwise she wouldn’t have gone to such great lengths to please him.Â
Samba sat in the sofa and enquired about Renee again.
Alby secretly locked the door as soon as Samba entered and put the keys in her brassiere. She went to sit beside Samba and ran her hands through his hair seductively and tried to touch his nipples.
Samba lost it immediately.
“What is the meaning of this? Where is Renee?” he asked angrily.
“You are not a kid, are you? Renee is not here. Did you expect her to wait for you all this while? She got tired of waiting so she called an old flame who came for her in a twinkle of an eye. Only God knows where they would be by now. They may be making love as we speak. So, I suggest you relax and have some fun too. Renee told me you are a tiger in bed and I want to find out for myself how good you really are,” Alby said, mockingly.
“Look, young lady, I didn’t come here to play games.”
Samba got to his feet and walked to the door only to find it locked.
Alberta followed him to the door and tried to kiss him.
Samba pushed her off.
“What are you trying to do, test me? Stop this nonsense this very minute and open the door. It’s been a long day and I could use some rest,” Samba said, fuming with rage.
“This is no joke, mister. I want you. It’s as simple as that. I think you are stuck with me for the night so you should drop the holier than thou attitude and let’s get serious. You are going to enjoy this, I promise you,” Alby said, still trying to kiss him.
Samba realized he had been tricked and now he was trapped with this lunatic Renee called a friend. He had to play his cards well or he would be in serious trouble. He wondered why he should be in such a mess.
“I don’t understand you, Alberta. I am with your best friend for Christ’s sake,” he implored.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Tell me something I don’t know. Aren’t you a man? I am offering myself to you on a silver platter and you are standing there behaving like a teenager on his first date. I guess you would have to come for the key yourself if you are that anxious to leave,” she taunted, pointing to her breasts.
“Look Alby, you are a very attractive woman. I’m sure you can easily get any guy to fall for you. I am just not the right man for you. I’m a little old school and I’m not sure I can live up to your expectations. Besides, I’m going out with your best friend. I think it’s not right to-“
“Cut the holy act, mister.” Alby cut in, “I am not asking you to marry me. All I need from you is a good f**k. Renee need not hear about this. It will just be this one time. We are in the twenty-first century so don’t make it look absurd. It happens all the time!”
She tried to undo his buttons but he wouldn’t let her.
“Please open the door so that I can leave. I don’t think I can trust you. I don’t understand how you can do this to someone you consider your best friend. Look, I am asking you kindly, please give me the keys,” Samba said, frustrated.
“You must think I am a monster but I want you to know that your Renee is no saint either. She has done worse things than this in her life. She tricked his own brother and right now he is separated from the woman he loves for no just cause. So don’t judge me. All I want is a good time and I am going to get one from you, right now,” she said and slid against Samba, kissing him passionately.
Samba pushed her away.
“I don’t believe you for a minute. Renee wouldn’t hurt even a fly. I don’t know what has come over you but please let me go. I don’t want any trouble,” he said breathlessly.
“You do have a lot of faith in Renee, don’t you? When you see her, just ask her about what she and her mother did to get rid of her sister-in-law. Actually, there is no difference between Renee and me. We have the same feathers that’s why we flock together.
I feel attracted to you just as she is attracted to you. We can be good together and no one would ever know. All I am asking is just a night with you and I promise I won’t bother you again. Please make love to me. I need you to make love to me,” Alberta said seductively.
Samba was in a deep fix. How was he going to get out of this one? He knew he had to find a way out but how?
He looked at her and smiled.
“Did you say one night? Do you really want me?” Samba managed to say.
“Do I look like I am joking? I want you like I’ve never wanted any man my entire life,” she said in all seriousness.
“I will be honoured to make love to the most beautiful woman on earth. And I must admit I find you very attractive too. If we are going to do it, it has to be done well.
I don’t think a woman as pretty as you deserve any less. You deserve nothing but the best so I have a proposal for you. Let’s agree to get together tomorrow night, my place or I can take you to a luxurious hotel. I will pick you up from work from Shinnels then we will have the rest of the evening to ourselves,” he said sweetly.
“Do you really mean that or you are just saying that to get rid of me?” Alberta asked.
“I mean every word I’ve said. Let’s make it tomorrow. Renee might decide to come back here and it will be disastrous if she finds us together. You deserve all the gentleness in the world. Allow me to make it a beautiful experience for you and me.”
“Okay, if you say so. Just promise me with a kiss so I know you wouldn’t let me down,” Alberta said.
Samba reluctantly took her in his arms and kissed her long and sweetly.
Alby was convinced.
She unlocked the door and escorted him to the main gate. Samba walked to his car and sped out of the house with the force of thunder.
He realised with dismay that his hands were shaking while driving. He pulled over and put his head back on the driver’s seat, shaking his head in total disbelief.
“How could people be so vicious? How could a friend behave like that?” he asked several times.
When his nerves were calm he drove to the hospital.
