CHAPTER 10
Nana Ekua was still sleeping when he got there. He waited for a while and talked to the doctor. She assured him Nana Ekua was going to be fine. She assured him everything was normal and there was no cause for alarm.
Samba sat quietly in the chair beside her bed in the private Ward and looked at Nana Ekua who slept soundly like a baby.
He promised himself he was going to be there for her no matter what. He admitted he would never win her heart as a woman and he was ready to put all that behind him. Without a doubt he was content he had her trust and friendship.
He left the hospital an hour later. He stopped over at Renee’s but she wouldn’t answer his calls or text messages.
Samba drove home thinking about Alberta.
He never liked her on first sight and her behaviour confirmed she was a viper. She was very selfish and a bad friend.
Samba was still finding it difficult to believe Alby actually wanted to have sex with him knowing he was going out with her best friend.
He needed to get Renee away from Alby somehow before she got hurt.
***
It had been two weeks and Samba had not been able to make Renee talk to him.
He knew she was being childish.
He had tried almost everything but Renee was not budging. To cap it off, he had sent her flowers with a note but she was still angry.
Finally, he admitted Renee had gotten under his skin and he was deeply in love with her.
Samba was miserable.
To keep close tabs on Alby he had taken her out the next day as promised but had insisted they do things his way.
He mentioned that he had a policy not to bed a woman until he had gone out on a date seven times. He explained that he believed sex was meant to be special and he could only be able to satisfy her sexually if he got to know her better.
Alberta had beaned with smiles when it occurred to her that Samba might be having strong feelings for her and that was a refreshing change. She accepted to play along and see where that would lead them. Already, she felt Samba was too nice for Renee.
He spent most of his free times at the hospital with Nana Ekua to get over his misery.
Nana Ekua had observed that Samba was miserable but didn’t push him to confide in her.
One Monday afternoon as Samba sat dejectedly by her bedside, Nana Ekua realised that he was distracted most of the time and was not concentrating on their conversation.
“Don’t you think it’ll be fun to take a few days off to a quiet place with your love? You look like you need a break,” Nana Ekua suggested.
“What? … What did you say?” Samba asked, confused.
“Wow, what is eating you up like that? I said you deserved a break. Take a few days off. I think some time with someone you love would do you a lot of good,” Nana Ekua repeated.
“But I can’t do that. I have the job and …”
“I am asking you to take a break. You know very well what this time of year is like. We normally don’t get to do much, so take some time off. I think you and your newfound love need some time together.”
“I don’t think that’ll be possible. She is not talking to me right now, and I don’t think she ever will. I don’t understand why she is being so childish about the whole incident. I break one promise and she is already fed up with me. As if that wasn’t enough her lousy friend is after my blood. I don’t understand women. One minute they are all loving and sweet, the next minute they are something else. If this is what love is all about, I am not interested,” Samba retorted.
Nana Ekua took a critical look at him and saw how frustrated he was. She wished there was something she could do to ease his pain and desperation. She could tell he cherished this girl very much.
“Heed my advice, Samba. I know a place. I believe the two of you could use the isolation and serenity. And I can bet that just a night on its luxurious beach would solve all your problems. Try and take her there, my dear friend. You deserve some happiness in your life and it seems to me this girl is the only one who can make that happen. Everything about you changed positively when you met her,” Nana Ekua tried to convince him.
“Even if I agree, how do I get her to come with me? She’s made it crystal clear that she doesn’t want to have anything to do with me. If she is anything like her friend, I’ll bet she’s already in another man’s bed,” Samba said, angrily.
“No, don’t torment yourself like that. You don’t actually believe that, do you? I know you can make her come with you if that’s what you really want. When you are ready just hand over to Owusu. I know he is capable of running the firm in your absence. Remember to be extra gentle with her. That’s all we need in times like that, and be honest,” Nana Ekua said, smiling.
Samba smiled and observed the woman who had been forced by circumstances to stay in bed twenty-four hours a day. A woman who had been forced to live wwithout the love of her life. He thought of how sweet and caring she was. He marvelled at how she could be so strong and positive about love after all that she had been through.
Nana Ekua was special. She always knew what to say to lift his spirit when he was down.
“God, why are all the good ones always taken?” he muttered to himself unconsciously.
“What did you say?” Nana Ekua asked.
Samba was baffled, “No, I was just thinking aloud. Are you sure you don’t need me here? I want to be here for you in case…”
“No, I will do just fine. Besides, my family is here and they’ve been wonderful. I don’t have a worry in the world except… Well, let’s not get into that right now. You have to straighten up things with the queen of your heart. Thats what matters now,” she said, pushing him off the chair he was seated on after handing him the directions to the resort.
Samba got to his feet and planted a friendly kiss on her forehead.
“Thanks, Iron Lady, you are a life saver. Please don’t hesitate to call me any time you need me.”
“Have a fruitful trip!” Nana Ekua said.
“Thanks, Ekua.You are the best!”
***
Samba walked into Jocelyn’s office with a smile on his face.
“How are you, my dependable P.A?” he asked.
“I am very fine, sir,”
“I need a big favour from you, Joycelyn. And I am afraid it is a big one,” he said uncomfortably.
“I will do just about anything for you, sir,” Joycelyn supplied.
“Good. I am going to this place,” he paused and gave her the paper in his hand, “I want you to call the number on the paper the very moment I leave here, and deliver the message as inscribed on the paper.”
Joycelyn scanned through the contents of the paper her boss had handed her and looked at him critically.
“You are not actually planning to do this, sir, are you?” Joycelyn asked worriedly.
Samba patted her on the shoulder with a big smile.
“Of course not. I am hoping this message would bring someone to her senses and come to me. I want to take her for a vacation but I don’t know how. We had a little misunderstanding and she is not talking to me. I am hoping this would get me a chance with her to settle matters…”
“Oh, okay!” Joycelyn interrupted him. “I understand you better now. I will do it with no problems at all.”
“Thank you very much, Joycelyn. I knew I could count on you.”
“You are welcome, sir, any time!” Joycelyn said as her boss walked out of her office.
Samba summoned Owusu and handed over the affairs of the company to him with detailed descriptions on pending issues.
“Don’t disappoint me, Owusu,” he added.
“I won’t let you down, sir. I will do my utmost to make you and Madam proud,” Owusu promised.
Samba dismissed him and tidied up his desk for the first time in ages. He picked up his briefcase and walked out of his office. He poked his head into Joycelyn’s office and signalled that he was leaving.
Joycelyn nodded and saw him off to his car and bade him a safe trip.
“Have a fruitful vacation, sir,” she added with a smile.
“Thanks for your kindness, Joycelyn,” he replied.
Joycelyn waited till he pulled away from the parking shed and went into her office. She picked the paper her boss had given her and smiled.
“How romantic, I wonder what he’s planned for her. I hope she knows and appreciates what she’s got. He is a wonderful man,” she said as she picked up the phone and dialled.
It rang for a long time but no one answered. She tried again and again. Finally a disgruntled voice answered, “Hello,”
“Good afternoon. Am I speaking to Miss Irene Amoah?” Joycelyn asked.
“Who wants to know? ” Renee retorted.
“i have an urgent letter for her. A letter from Mr. Samba….,”
“Tell him to go to hell,” Renee retorted and hung up.
Joycelyn dialled again and after what seemed an eternity Renee picked up again.
“Don’t you have anything better to do, young lady?” Renee asked rudely.
“As a matter of fact I do but I think Samba is in trouble. He’s planning to commit suicide…”
“Suicide? What are you talking about?” Renee interrupted.
“I found a letter in the pending file with the instruction that I dispatch it urgently.”
“And who the hell are you to be dispatching letters for him?”
” He is my boss and I am afraid he is in some kind of trouble…I don’t know what’s going on but the contents of the letter are very disturbing…”
“So what has that got to do with me?” Renee interrupted her rudely.
” I was hoping I could get an address to dispatch this immediately. It’s a matter of life and death. Your name and contact number was on the letter that was why I called, ” Joycelyn explained.
“What does the letter say anyway?” Renee asked impatiently.
“The note summarily reads,
I guess I have nothing to live for. I have tried, in fact, more than tried to make you know how sorry I am for what happened. And I have tried to show how much I love you but I guess you don’t feel the same way towards me. If you did, you wouldn’t be so mean to me. So many things happened in my life and I gave up on love but when you came into it I finally had a reason to live.
And when you told me you loved me, you made me the happiest man on earth. I therefore promised myself I was going to love you and only you for all eternity. Now that you don’t want anything to do with me, I guess I have lost my very reason to live. I guess it has come to a stage that it would be better for everybody if I exit this world. Don’t…”
“Can you please read a little faster?” Renee asked.
“I will try,
…don’t call me a coward because this is very difficult to do but I will do anything for your love. I am going to Memories Beach Resort, if by tomorrow morning I don’t see you then I will take it that you never cared for me and so I have no reason to live. No matter what happens, I want you to know that I love you very much.
Samba K. Frimpong.”
“What? Are you sure Samba wrote that?” Renee asked, confused.
“Yes, I am. I am his Personal Assistant and I’m very conversant with his handwriting. He left a couple of minutes ago but he asked me to attend to the pending file in his office. If you love him, you would act fast. Tomorrow might be too late,” Joycelyn advised.
“Where did he say he was going?” Renee asked, impatiently.
“He said he’s headed for Memories Beach Resort. It is in the….”
“I know where it is,” Renee said and hung up before Joycelyn could give her further directions.
She was not very convinced about the supposed letter and it’s contents. She, however, thought it would be better to be sure than sorry. Yes, she loved Samba and didn’t want to lose him. She ordered one of the drivers to bring out her car.
She picked up her handbag and rushed out, nearly knocking down her Mom in the doorway.
“Take it easy, young lady. What’s all this rush about?” she asked, concerned.
“It’s Samba. I will explain later. Right now, I have to get going,” she said without stopping.
She got into the car and sped off.
“Hey, stay safe please!” her mother shouted at the top of her voice.
Renee neither stopped nor responded.
