THE LEGEND OF DAYO
SEASON 1: THE EMERGENCE
CHAPTER 15
A Matter Of Death
And then, in the midst of her fear and agony, Neji Helen saw the spirit of Jhon Moziz shooting past her and entering the river!
Some of the people were helping her to her feet, and she moaned with pain as she trudged toward the edge of the river on legs that were trembling badly. A lot of people were now lined up on the side of the river, peering with fear into its depths.
Neji saw several of the young women crying!
She saw some of the men diving into the river to rescue the young prince.
And then, an amazing thing happened!

Since the other people could not see Jhon Moziz, it appeared to them like Temi was lying on just air, suspended above the river with nothing holding him!
They screamed with fear, and many began to flee.
The brave ones remained, witnessing this strange sight of a man seemingly hanging in the air!
Jhon Moziz placed the inert form of Temi on the grass, and immediately the invisible spirit began to massage and pump Temi’s chest in a bizarre fashion.
Temi spluttered suddenly, vomiting out water, and Neji cried with relief as she began to go to him.
But then, her eyes were arrested by a very horrible sight!
Just before she moved toward Temi, her eyes had gone once more to the river…
And there it was!
She saw a pair of huge, red, hate-filled eyes right there in the middle of the river, glaring at her with evil intent!
Neji Helen blinked fast and hard, and opened her eyes.
But the red eyes in the river were still there, glaring defiantly at her.
She felt a stab of raw terror pushing up her heart into her mouth!
And then, horror of horrors, the eyes jumped clear of the river and swung into the air, seeming to sail above her head.
Neji Helen looked upward with bated breath as the eyes curved in an arc above her, still filled with hatred, and still baleful.
The red pair of eyes zig-zagged in the air, and then Neji Helen watched with horror as they slammed into her brother’s face.
Uche Joseph screamed with pain and covered his face with his hands, bending double with sudden agony.
“Uche?” Neji Helen shouted, and walked rapidly toward her brother. “My God, Uche! Are you okay?”
Uche Joseph straightened up suddenly, and it was Neji Helen’s turn to scream when she saw that her brother’s eyes were deep red!
No pupils, no irises, just a sea of deep red!
And Uche’s face seemed to shine with a reddish tinge too, as if a red bulb had been switched on just under the flesh across his face.
His red eyes were maddened with fury and hatred as he growled and suddenly lunged at Neji Helen, who screamed and tried to flee.
The possessed Uche Joseph swung out a leg and kicked Neji’s feet from under her.
She fell hard on the ground, and Uche fell on her, his hands curling savagely around her throat, and then he began to squeeze the air out of her.
Horrified that her own brother could be doing this to her, some of those watching suddenly rushed toward them.
The young men tried to pry Uche Joseph’s hands off Neli’s throat, but he had gained the strength of Hercules as he held on viciously to his sister’s throat, squeezing and squeezing as he tried to strangle her.
Neji Helen was seeing stars now!
Her vision was darkening, and she knew death was near.
Suddenly, Prince Temi appeared behind the people trying to help her.
His handsome face was now clouded with fear as he pushed the boys aside and grabbed Uche Joseph by the neck.
The moment the prince’s hands touched him Uche Joseph jerked violently as if a terrible electric power was surging through him, and his hands dropped from Neji’s neck as he collapsed on the ground, jerking spasmodically.
The red eyes sped out of Uche’s body, and hovered in the air, looking at Prince Dayo with uncertainty, and a tint of despair, and then it shot out toward the river, and glided into it, and out of sight.
Prince Temi was on one knee now, and he had gathered Neji Helen into his arms, looking at her with scared eyes. Uche Joseph sat up groggily and stared around him with confusion.
“What happened?” he asked, absolutely perplexed.
One of the young men who didn’t know what had actually happened slapped Uche across the face rather harshly, his face angry.
“What happened, you bastard?” he asked furiously. “You almost strangled your sister to death! Has the obeah entered you?”
“Neji, my love, are you okay?” Prince Temi asked with desperation.
Neji could not speak because her pharynx was almost crushed, and she could barely breathe.
Her face was becoming blue from the lack of oxygen.
The spirit of Jhon Moziz glided to her side, and then he reached out a hand and covered Neji’s throat.
She gasped painfully as she wheezed for breath.
The Grand Oracle’s hand moved across her trachea, smoothing the pain away, and then suddenly she could breathe freely again.
She put her arms around Temi’s neck and began to cry as reality sunk in.
Already the whole atmosphere was calm, and several young people were speaking excitedly, wanting to know what was happening.
Prince Temi and Neji Helen stared at the spirit of Jhon Mosiz as he floated above the ground, looking down grimly at them.
He seemed to sigh inside that dark cloak, and then he spoke quietly.
“That was the evil agent of Leke Olugbade Bally, the master of the dark arts who is serving as Grand Oracle in my stead in Dayo. His evil agents are roaming round, and this one saw through your eyes and came after you, Prince Temidayo. My powers are weakened in this land. He’ll be back again, and he will kill somebody. You have to leave this land now, Prince Temidayo of Dayo. I beseech you. Now they know you’re here, and death will follow. Not only your death, my Lord, but the deaths of many people, including this earthling and her family.”
“I’m not leaving Neji, do you hear?” Temi shouted in an anguish at the spirit of Jhon Moziz, who looked sadly at the prince.
“Perhaps, you will be happier if Leke Olugbade Bally kills her,” he said without much emotion. “You can’t save her now. Maybe, it will be a tale of the tragic end of lovers, should that evil agent of Leke Bally appear again and kill only you two stupid teenagers. But that won’t be so. If he comes again, he might end up killing everybody in this village. You have to leave her, Temidayo, and return to the Dayo Empire where your destiny awaits you!”
“I’m not leaving with you to any Dayo Empire, do you hear me?” Temi screamed in anguish.
The spirit of Jhon Moziz shimmered for a second, and then he faded slowly and was soon gone.
Prince Temi bent his head and looked at Neji Helen.
“It is okay, my darling,” Prince Temi said gently. “I’m here with you. We can defeat anything.”
Neji Helen shook her head as tears flooded her and fell down her cheeks in torrents.
She was in pain; her heart was tearing up as the truth stared her in the face!
There was no doubt about it now!
Temi almost died, and she could not allow that, no!
Although she loved him, although leaving him would break the very basic core of her life, that was the cross she had to carry, and the sacrifice she needed to do.
She knew, without a shred of doubt, that if the spirit of Jhon Moziz hadn’t been around, Temi might have died, along with her.
“You need to listen to him, please,” she said quaveringly.
His handsome face paled, a look of sheer unhappiness entering the depths of his eyes.
“Neji!” he whispered painfully. “You want me gone too?”
“No!” she whispered, curling her arms around him tightly. “I want you here with me, Temi, for eternity. But we can’t deny the fact that both of us almost lost our lives a few minutes ago. Let’s listen to him, please, and then we would decide what to do afterwards.”
He was silent for a while.
It was quite evident that he was displeased.
“Very well, if you say so,” Temi said morosely. “I’ll listen to Jhon Moziz, that accursed spirit!”
