It was morning.
The sun had just come up.
Birds were chirping melodiously and the wind whirling in sweet resonance with nature.
Esenam was in the garden.
She had finished watering the flowers and was seated on one of the benches with her eyes closed.
Events of the past day still haunted her. She didn’t sleep much in the night.
Yayra run to her and informed her that Akwasi was in the living room looking for her and that their Daddy sent her to get Esenam.
Esenam pondered over the message for a while and asked Yayra to go and tell Akwasi to join her in the garden.
Akwasi walked graciously in a while later looking extremely handsome in the black jeans and the orange Lacoste T-shirt he was wearing.
Esenam admitted he was extremely looking good but closed her eyes to ease the pain she still felt in her chest whenever she remembered what happened in his room.
Esenam drew back when he tried to kiss her.
Fresh tears formed in her eyes.
“Hi, sweetheart!”
Her tears choked her.
Esenam couldn’t utter a word.
She marvelled at how Akwasi was going on as if nothing had happened.
He sat beside her and touched her tenderly on the cheek.
Esenam brushed his hand off.
“Don’t touch me!”
“You have every right to be angry at me,sweetie. I behaved like a jerk yesterday. Well, I… that’s why I’m here. I came to render my sincerest apologies for my silly behaviour. Look, I don’t know what came over me. I guess I was jealous and frustrated. The thought of you in another man’s arms drove me raving nuts. I’m sorry Esenam, I really am.”
“There is no excuse for the way you treated me. Now, tell me, what would’ve happened if your sister hadn’t showed up? The thought of that sends shivers of fear down my spine. I really thought and believed you loved me and that you’d never do anything to hurt me. How could you Akwasi, how could you do that to me?”
“I do love you Esenam. I said I was sorry. Please find it in your heart to forgive. I know it will take a while for you to forget what happened but I’m ready to accept that. Give me the chance to make it up to you. All I’m asking for is a chance to right the wrong done you.I’m hopeless without you, Esenam. I’m simply extinct without you.”
“I really want to believe you, Akwasi. Can I put this behind me just like that? You tried to rape me. That is a side of you I have never seen. I don’t think I can trust you anymore, Akwasi.
And I can’t afford to trust you ever again. I never thought for a second you could do a thing like that to me. I can forgive, yes, but can I forget what happened? Akwasi I would never forget what you tried to do to me.
Please, I think it’s best we don’t see each other anymore. That way you can have your freedom to do whatever you want. I was stupid to think that you would support me on this quest of mine.” Esenam lamented.
“Aren’t you being a little over-dramatic? After all, nothing really happened, did it. You are convincing me by your action that there is someone else. You were just looking for an excuse to break it off with me.
Yes, you play around and when you see me you want to play saint. You’re a hypocrite; do you know that? Why don’t you look me straight in the eye and tell me that there’s someone else? You think I can’t handle that? Tell me to the face that someone else is banging you.”

“You know very well that that is not the issue here. There is no one else. You should know what I can and cannot do by.now.”
“Then why, Esenam? Why can’t things go back to how they used to be? Why can’t we make love?”
“Because I want to serve God faithfully. I don’t want to incur His displeasure. I thought I explained that to you. There is really no one else, believe me.”
“That is bullshit and you know it. Are you the only Christian on earth? Besides, aren’t we going to get married? I’m really getting tired of this nonsense, young lady. You better make up your mind and decide now if you want to be with me or not!”
“I don’t think we would see eye to eye on this. It was easy when I didn’t know sex before marriage displeases God. I’m sorry Akwasi. I won’t stop serving God because you are not happy with it. I guess this is it. We are done. I’m setting you free. I don’t need this anymore.” Esenam said sadly and took off the ring he gave her and handed it to him.
Akwasi was knocked for six.
He got to his feet and looked intently at Esenam.
He could not believe Esenam would ever break it off with him.
Akwasi knew she adored him and would never hurt him.
He thought threatening her would bring her back to her senses.
He was so sure she would drop everything for him when he pushed her to the wall.
“I don’t believe this, Esenam; you are throwing away our delightful relationship and for what? I know you still love me and I love you too. Why are you doing this to me, why are you doing this to us, Esenam?”
“If that is what it takes for you to believe and accept that I want to please my Creator, Yes. It’s not easy, believe me because I’ve loved you almost all my life but I’m sorry I can’t stand between you and your happiness.
I won’t make love with you again, and from what you’ve said and done, I can see you can’t be faithful to me. I also know that I can’t stand you being unfaithful. I’m therefore giving your life back to you. Do as you please without feeling sorry for your actions because of me.
I want to liberate you. I can’t eat my cake and have it, can I? Please, take it. I’m truly sorry it has come to this. I’ll continue praying for you,who knows, someday, you’ll become a true Christian and would understand why I did what I’m doing right now. I’m deeply sorry it ended like this.”
Akwasi could not believe his ears.
She was actually doing it.
She was really calling it quits.
He stared at her outstretched hand and the ring in it with incredulity.
“I don’t need that; give it to a pig if you don’t want it anymore. I’m very sure you’ve gone crazy.” Akwasi articulated and stormed out of the house without a word to his parent’s in- law.
Esenam was very heartbroken by Akwasi’s reaction and was still getting over it.
To make matters worse, her Dad was backing Akwasi without listening to her side of the story.
She felt betrayed by her own father.
She closed her eyes as hot tears streamed down her beautiful smooth face.
