EPISODE 28
Nikolai Chekov was suddenly aware of how silent the atmosphere was, and how lonely the street felt. It was him alone with this embodiment of evil, and much against his will he felt the first tingling of fear in his guts.
“You demon!” Nikolai forced out through his dry throat. “You shall not usurp the powers of the Most High God!”
The young boy smiled, and his expression was daunting.
“Look at you, Unblind!” he said softly. “Sweating with fear! But don’t let us dally here. Come fly with me! I want to show you something!”
“You have no dominion over me and I’m not going anywhere with you!” Nikolai said as he pointed a finger at the boy. “This day I’ll show you the powers I wield!”
The boy chuckled and shook his head, and when he spoke the voice of Duke Swallows was once more back.
“Go on, show me, Sinner!” he said and then he began to ascend slowly toward the sky. “Come on, fly with me. I want to show you something above the clouds, Sinner.”
He gestured with his right hand and then Nikolai felt himself levitating toward the sky! Nikolai tried to squat and even tried to hurl himself to the ground, but it was to no avail! He soared upward toward the boy, and soon they were face to face and floating higher and higher!
Eddie Griffith came out of gate and ran into the street. He looked all around him with absolute confusion because Nikolai was nowhere to be seen. As he continued to float higher, Nikolai’s fear slowly began to change to horror. He thrust his arms out as if trying to hold on to something and this brought an amused look into the devilish eyes of Duke.
“Don’t worry, Unblind, you’ll not fall, at least not now,” he said.
Nikolai looked down and saw Griffith on the street looking around helplessly.
“Ed!” he screamed shrilly. “Ed, I’m up here, Ed! Please, Ed, help me!”
Duke Swallows laughed then and flames of fire came out of his mouth as he laughed.
“How pathetic!” he said with devilish seriousness. “At a time like this when you’re floating into the sky with a demon, you rather choose to call on a man to help you? Where is your bravado and all that sassy talk? Thought you were going to send me to some bad place, Unblind.”
Eddie Griffith heard the faint voice from above and he finally looked up. His mouth fell open with shock when he saw Nikolai ascending into the sky!
“Niko!” he screamed shrilly with horror. “What’re you doing up there? Come down this instant, please!”
Nikolai Chekov looked at Duke Swallows and even though he fought it, his eyes slowly filled up with tears.
“I banish you into the wild, demon!” he said in a very unsteady voice. “Everything that I bind here is bound in heaven, yes I know! And in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ I bind you, demon! I cast you out into the wild in Jesus’ name!”
Duke Swallows chuckled and crossed his arms across his chest.
“Your terror has taken you over, Sinner,” he said softly. “You’re uttering mere words right now because you have lost your faith and you’re just a pathetic little man who is afraid to die!”
“Please!” Nikolai whispered fiercely. “Please, I am a father!”
“I know,” Duke Swallows said. “A sweet husband and father to a wonderful boy and a beautiful girl. I know, my friend. But I want you to look up now. Go on, look up! I want you to see this…it is so funky!”
But Nikolai did not look up; he kept staring at Duke Swallows.
“You have no dominion over me because I serve the only true living Lord!” he said lamely. “The name above all names, the mighty name of Jesus Christ! You dare not touch me!”
“Yes, quite right, sport,” Duke Swallows said, and his eyes glittered like diamonds again. “Your soul I cannot touch, but you lay your body open with the darkness of your heart!”
“I have no darkness!” Nikolai said fiercely. “I’ve been cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ!”
“Indeed, that is also true. But your heart is filled with the bitter bile of covetousness! You have coveted the gifts of another, and sought to make yourself of more import than all the rest, to the extent of disobeying a mandate set by your Master Himself. Covetousness, my dear, is a carnal sin!”
Nikolai Chekov knew what was going on, and he knew he had to fight it as hard as he could otherwise his life would end in a few seconds. Duke Swallows was trying to get a hand into his armour and rip it apart. Right now, soaring, Nikolai saw that he was still glowing, but its intensity was becoming dimmer by the second. This was where faith was required to play, the undying interplay of belief and faith, but his terror was eroding all his defences fast.
The fact that the Duke had been able to take him to the skies had filled him with dread and made him wish he had not dared to face this demon, and by the mere thought that his mind had betrayed him like that, the Duke had a hold on him. And now the battle was raging to its final conclusion, and it was filling Nikolai with great fear by the second.
“I command you to set me down in the name of my Lord Jesus Christ, demon!” Nikolai said softly. “You have no dominion over me!”
And instantly they stopped rising and hovered in the air, and Nikolai’s force-field shone a bit brighter.
The smile disappeared from the Duke’s face and his glittering eyes changed to blood crimson, and the number on his forehead burned fiercely. He snarled, his lips drawing back from his teeth that suddenly looked like fangs.
And then he screamed.
“LOOK UP, YE PUNY MENSTRUAL CLOT!”
He gestured upward with his hands, palms showing up, and Nikolai felt his head swinging up much against his will, and what he saw made his terror complete and made him faint with fear!
He could see a wonderful golden staircase ascending to heaven, and it was filled with beautiful angels with harps!
A welcoming ensemble from the Lord!
And that was when Nikolai lost the battle!
His eyes came to Duke Swallows, and his terror was complete such that he spoke in a rush without thinking.
“Please, don’t do this to me!” he implored as tears streamed down his face. “I did usurp the powers of my Lord! This, indeed, is not my prerogative! I have young children. They need me! Please, spare me!”
Eddie Griffith, who was kneeling in the middle of the street with his hands clamped in prayer for Nikolai as he gazed upward, groaned with sudden terror and his eyes filled with tears instantly.
“Niko, no, no, no!” he whispered tragically. “You should have kept to your simple faith! You should never beg the devil for your life! Oh, my God! Save him!”
And, up in the skies, a sly smile curved around the lips of Duke Swallows.
“Ah!” he whispered savagely. “But I do not have dominion over your soul, sport! Why then, do you beg of me? Fall!”
And then Nikolai fell from the sky!
And as he hurtled toward the ground, he finally clamped his hands together, and he prayed for forgiveness. He saw the golden staircase extending towards him, filled with more angels, and he knew he was going home.
Yes, it was indeed true, his heart had always been filled with covetousness. He had always believed he could have served the Lord better ever since he came to know of a young African Unblind who had been able to vanquish the dreaded horde of demons called the Legion!
Nikolai had always wanted power, a little bit more power than the rest, and to know that someone who had served the Lord less, and done less for the work of the Lord, had been so favoured and that had filled him with bitterness. It was true that he had prayed over it several times. However, seeing Boat close-up and witnessing his blatant repulsion of the grace he had been covered with had brought all Nikolai’s bitterness rushing back and in his heart, he had questioned why God should entrust such a crude young man with so much unbelievable power!
And this sin of covetousness had finally landed him where he feared most to tread! But it was over now, and his heart was at peace as he felt his soul leaving his body and landing gently on the golden staircase. As the sounds of the sweet music from the angels filled his ears, the golden ladder began to take Nikolai Chekov higher into the sky, and he kept on looking at his broken and bloodied body on the street and saw Eddie Griffith still kneeling and weeping bitterly.
***
Griffith’s heart was broken as he looked down at the broken body of Nikolai Chekov.
He had smashed down on the street with such force that his body was horribly broken-up and mangled. His arms and legs simply came off, and his head was so smashed that it had become formless and flat with brain tissue scattered across the street!
Such horror!
Such terror!
“Lord, not like this, please, my God, not like this!” he whispered with deep pain. “Please, I beseech you, my Lord! If it pleases You, let me have a body to send back home, my Lord!”
And when Griffith opened his eyes again, he saw that Nikolai’s body was now whole, all broken parts instantly fixed so that it appeared as if the man was simply asleep.
“Thank you, my Lord, my Master, my omnipotent God!” Griffith whispered with gratitude.
And then, suddenly, a cold wind began to blow and Eddie felt a presence on the street in front of him. He looked up slowly and saw the gloating figure of Duke Swallows in the body of the little boy standing right there.
“Hey, Griff!” Duke Swallows whispered, and it was like pins being driven into Griffith’s ears. “Come fly with me! Come and see something funky I want to show you!”
Eddie raised his right hand instantly.
“You have no dominion over me because I serve the mighty Lord Jesus Christ!” Eddie said and got to his feet. He kept his face down as he began to move back fast toward the gates.
“Hey, Griff!” the harsh whisper came again.
“You have no dominion over me, in the name of Jesus Christ!” Griffith repeated, moving fast backwards.
“Hey, Griff! Look at me, sport!”
“YOU HAVE NO DOMINION OVER ME!” Griffith screamed as he backed out through the gates and then turned and headed back fast toward the main door.
“Hey, Griff!” Duke Swallows whispered as he came up fast behind Eddie. “You’re scared shitless, aren’t you? You’re so horrified and I can smell it in you! Where’s your force-field, sport? Why are you not glowing?”
“YOU HAVE NO DOMINION OVER ME IN THE NAME OF JESUS!” Griffith screamed over and over now as his trembling legs climbed the steps to the porch and his trembling fingers reached for the door handle.
“Hey, Griff!” Swallows whispered. “Stop and face me, douchebag!”
“YOU HAVE NO DOMINION OVER ME IN THE NAME OF JESUS!” Griffith screamed as the door opened and he threw himself inside. He landed on his belly, and as his body trembled, he began to weep pathetically.
The door had been opened for him by Yaw Boat who stood in the doorway now looking at the ten-year-old boy in the white gown standing on the porch facing him.
“Hello, Pappy!” Duke Swallows said in a voice that was now the voice of a little boy. “Want to see something funky, Pappy? I took ten years from your whore! I’m going to take fifteen more years from her and show you something quite funky!”
And as Yaw Boat watched, chilled to his very core, the little boy seemed to grow rapidly! His body filled out, growing taller, broader, muscular…racing through childhood to his teens, his face undergoing a rapid development, his body changing along the same lines until he was now a twenty-five-year old man standing on the porch smiling!
It was the most chilling and horrifying thing Yaw Boat had ever seen in his life.
Ledi, Pastor Amoah and Pastor Anderson who had been standing behind Yaw Boat, had seen the devilish change, and they all groaned with great despair.
“This is evil!” Pastor Amoah whispered with horror.
And Yaw Boat could barely breathe because the spawn standing in front of him was exactly like him! It was like looking into a mirror! This was him!
“Hello, Dad,” he said and held out his arms. “I missed you so much, Dad! Please, hug me!”
And Yaw Boat was lost!
