EPISODE 27
There was an eerie rasping sound in the room, a huffing and puffing intent of evil, and they all heard it as the Duke blew through the living-room.
“He’s gone,” Pastor Amoah whispered hoarsely.
Barely able to breathe, Yaw Boat lifted Nicole and carried her to the bed. He put her down gently.
“Is she okay?” Ledi Pedi asked in a voice that was quite unsteady.
“Still bleeding!” Boat whispered hoarsely. “Heal her!”
Ledi looked at him blandly for a second.
“It is not all of us who had your gifts, Boat,” he said softly. “I don’t have healing. Unless her father does.”
“I don’t have it either,” Anderson said as he knelt beside the bed with fear on his face.
“I’ll look around for a first aid box then,” Ledi said.
“Don’t bother, I have healing,” came a firm voice from the doorway, and they all turned to see that Eddie Griffith and Nikolai Chekov had entered the room, and it was Nikolai who had spoken.
“Where did you come from?” Ledi asked with a level of surprise in his voice.
“They’re also Unblinds. They were with us but decided to go to the hotel for the night,” Paul Anderson said.
“Yes, that was the plan until our we sensed the Duke here, and thought you might need help,” Griffith replied.
Nikolai looked at Boat darkly as he reached out and held Nicole’s cut arm, closed his eyes, and prayed quietly to himself. When he removed his hand, Nicole’s cut was gone and her smooth skin was only covered with blood. Breathing heavily, Boat pulled out his handkerchief and cleaned the blood off her hand gently.
He was trembling slightly and it was evident that he was very much in agony.
“We felt the Duke outside,” Griffith said as he leaned against the wall and crossed his arms across his chest. “What happened here?”
For a moment the shell-shocked people could not speak, and then old Pastor Amoah quickly told them what had happened.
“What does it all mean?” he asked levelly. “It seems that evil entity took Nicole’s blood.”
Griffith and Chekov exchanged sudden looks of horror, and for a moment Griffith’s face drained of blood and he tottered as if he was going to fall down. He reached out and steadied himself on the wall.
Alarmed by the Unblind’s behaviour, Boat got off the bed and faced the man.
“Talk to me,” he said grimly, and Griffith nodded but his face remained ashen with horror.
“The Great Apocalypse in the vision our mighty God revealed to me, Boat,” he said and took a huge handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his face. “The combination of the fallen angel and the spawn of the Unblind. Did the Duke take any other thing belonging to the lady? A cloth, maybe?”
“Yaw,” Nicole called softly from the bed and held out her arms. “I don’t feel so good, Yaw. Please, hold me!”
Boat’s jaws grated as he hesitated for a moment, and then he went back to Nicole and pulled her into his arms. She was shivering as she wound her arms around him tightly. Boat looked across her shoulder at Griffith.
“This dawn, she woke up to find black snakes on her bed and crows around the bed,” Boat said through clenched teeth. “And then the…baby boy came out of her bathroom. Nicole believes the baby was holding one of her panties.”
“Worn?” Griffith asked softly.
Nicole nodded but she did not lift her face from Boat’s shoulder.
“And he has her blood now,” Griffith said. “His residence shall be possible now…unless we stop him.”
“Speak to me in a language I can understand!” Boat said grimly.
Nikolai looked at him with disdain.
“Scared now, Mr. Boat?” he asked coldly and with bitter fury. “You should be satisfied now! It was your call to go after that thing! All these wouldn’t have happened if you had obeyed a simple call to use your gift!”
“Lay off, Niko!” Griffith almost screamed harshly. “Lay off, would you? You may detest his ways but damn it, this is between him and the Sovereign Lord, and you have no right to judge him!”
“Mr. Griffith!” Boat said tightly. “What does it all mean? You better explain it to me!”
Griffith nodded and walked forward to stand in front of Yaw Boat.
“In the Olden Ages, before our Lord Christ came, angels came down on earth and took wives amongst the women of the earth,” he said in a voice that was still quite unsteady. “They lasted until the great floods of Noah’s time came, and they left their human bodies and ascended to Heaven where they were justly cast out to await their damnation during the Judgement Day. Duke’s grandfather was one of the fallen, but he did not go back. Because he was an angel, he was able to survive the Great Flood. Are you following?”
“I am,” Boat said simply.
Griffith then sat down on the bed by his side and looked at him earnestly.
“Now, that vile angel’s generation has come down to the Duke, whose earthly body you destroyed once in the battle you had with him in the woods. He’s without a body now.”
“Thought he lives in the body of…the baby boy,” Boat said.
“He does,” Griffith continued. “But he’s of an angelic entity, and the baby is just a tad. If the Duke stays for too long inside the baby’s body, he will risk killing the child. But he cannot afford that! He needs the body of the baby and the Holy Relics to render we Unblinds powerless against him, and his residence in the baby has to be permanent. And that was why our merciful God revealed to me! With the panties he took, and the blood samples he now has, he can now accelerate the growth of the spawn by using the chi that he will draw from Nicole!”
“I still don’t understand a bloody thing you’re saying, Mr. Griffith!” Boat said with deep fear, and Nicole held him tighter and even though her tears fell, she whispered against his neck.
“It’s okay, my love, my sweet love! Nothing matters, love. Only the ways of the Lord, and the love we share! Be patient and listen to him!”
“Here’s the scenario, my son,” Griffith said sadly. “The Duke wants the body of the spawn to grow big quickly so that he can occupy him. The only way he can do that is substitute Nicole’s life force with the spawn’s. So, once he has her blood and panties, his evil ritual is complete. From now, Nicole will begin to age rapidly. The more she ages, the faster and bigger the boy’s body will grow and allow the Duke to reside in him!”
“My goodness!” Paul Anderson whispered with horror. “Oh, Nicole! No!”
Nicole said nothing but her arms tightened around Boat and tears filled her eyes as she pressed tightly against him.
“And she can lose her life?” Boat whispered with his heart thudding with a fear that he tried to hide.
“It is definite, my son,” Griffith said softly. “Depends on how fast the Duke draws her life essence, she can die of old age in a few days. I don’t think he will waste much time, Yaw Boat, because you hurt him and gave him terror. And you also killed his son, more or less, and he is out to hurt you badly.”
“By taking my son and the life of the only woman I love!” Boat grated out through clenched teeth.
“Exactly, my son,” Griffith said. “Unless, of course, we kill or get rid of him. It will not be the life of only Nicole, though. The Great Apocalypse of Duke Swallows will make a lot of Unblinds die because we cannot discern him, and his powers would be magnified by the Holy Relics. And you, Mr. Boat, are the only person God showed in my vision as being the only one who can go against the Duke and live!”
“I don’t have any powers of the Unblinds left!” Boat cried in sudden agony.
“What?” Griffith whispered, and he sounded petrified.
“His status as an Unblind was revoked,” Pastor Amoah said softly, and they all looked at Boat with shock.
Slowly, Yaw Boat pushed back from Nicole and looked at her as her tears fell.
They all gasped with sudden shock and terror!
Yaw Boat stared at her with horror!
Nicole’s hair had turned very white around her head with a little patch of black in the middle.
And her face showed the marked webbed crumpling of an elderly woman!
In the space of a few minutes, Nicole had aged like ten years!
“What palpable evil is this?” Pastor Amoah whispered with horror.
“Nic!” Yaw Boat whispered as tears came to his eyes almost immediately.
“Nothing matters, my love,” she whispered and forced out a brave smile even as tears glittered in her own eyes. “What matters is you, that you find your way back, that you make your peace with our Lord!”
The only time Yaw Boat had felt such crippling helplessness and unbearable pain had been the time he had watched his father being murdered right in front of his eyes by the Legion when it had crushed his father’s skull on the concrete roof!
And it was happening all over again!
Right before his eyes!
Would these things ever stop?
He raised a hand that trembled violently and covered his mouth as he gazed through a wall of pain at the aged face of Nicole.
Pastor Amoah was on his feet, and he put a hand on Boat’s shoulder.
“This isn’t the time for tears, my son,” he said softly. “It is the time for finding your prayer inside the belly of the whale. Her life, as at this moment, depends on you!”
“Why?” Boat whispered painfully as he now covered his face with two trembling hands. “Why should He do this to me if He cared that much? Tell me why!”
“Even now, he blasphemes!” Nikolai said disdainfully and turned away. “I can feel the Duke outside! Use me, Lord, for I’m a willing vessel! Let Your glory shine through me this hour!”
“Stay where you are, Niko!” Griffith said harshly.
“God tests those He loves, my son!” Pastor Amoah said to Boat as he looked scathingly at Nikolai Chekov. “We’re tested through fire to forge us, to clean us of our infirmities so that we shine bright with the will and power of our Lord. Yours has been a most arduous and vexatious road which none of us could have walked, I admit. But we’re assured that He never tests us beyond limits we cannot endure! If you would see beyond the anger and pain, you will find a beautiful point to meet the Lord, my son.”
“He never wanted the gifts he was given!” Nikolai said grimly. “He was favoured above all, but he treated it with such disdain and childish tantrums!”
“You shut the fuck up now!” Yaw Boat roared with such fury that the whole floor seemed to shake violently, and the wall clock on the wall shattered! His face was filled with wrath as his finger pointed at Nikolai, and they all stared at him with wonder. It was evident that still there was something inside of him, something that had not quite been taken away, a power so raw and fierce that it was frightening to behold. “You don’t want to see my fury!”
Nikolai Chekov looked at Boat defiantly for a moment but it was evident that he was suddenly filled with apprehension. His tongue licked his dry lips for a moment, and then his furious eyes looked at Eddie Griffith.
“He’s out there, and I’m going after him!”
“Don’t be a fool!” Griffith said as he planted himself in front of Chekov with scared eyes. “This is not child’s play, Niko! The Apocalypse has started, and this is not your call! From this very moment every Unblind is balanced on a tightrope, and the smallest miscalculation will result in death! It is up to him to face the Duke!”
“He has lost his abilities as an Unblind!” Nikolai screamed. “And since when did we live in fear of evil when the power of the Lord is magnified in us? The name of Jesus is stronger than a million Dukes!”
“I do not dispute that, Niko!” Griffith said passionately. “That is correct! But we are always subject to the will of God, Niko! That is supreme! The will of God! And it is His will that we stay out of the path of this evil incarnate! It is His will that Boat is the only one enabled to fight this canker, just as it was His will that His only son came to die for our sins!”
“You believe that, Ed, but I know I cannot stand aside and watch Goliath mocking the rightful ways of the Lord!” Nikolai shouted with passion. “That thing, that vile thing, cannot usurp the rightful ways of the Lord!”
“Don’t be a fool, Pastor Chekov!” Pastor Amoah said in a rasping voice. “A single line of prayer, please. Thy will be done! Do not go against that will!”
“Well, I’m not a coward like the rest of you, of an ungrateful wretch like Boat!” Nikolai said angrily. “The power of the Lord lives in me, and Duke is nothing against that!”
He pushed Griffith aside and moved toward the door as Griffith fell heavily.
“Hey, don’t be stupid!” Ledi cried and tried to grab him but he was already out of the bedroom.
“Niko!” Eddie Griffith screamed with sheer horror as he scrambled to his feet. “Come back here, Nikolai! Oh, Lord, save him, save him, Lord!”
He ran into the living-room but Nikolai was already out the main door.
Eddie ran after his friend!
And when Nikolai Chekov opened the main gates of the house and went out into the late afternoon street, he found a ten-year-old handsome boy standing silently in the middle of the street. The boy was wearing a long flowing gown and he bore an uncanny resemblance to Yaw Boat.
When he smiled the mark of the beast blazed on his forehead in glittering white figures: 666!
His eyes were piercing glittering orbs like diamonds, and when he spoke his voice was not that of a boy, but the rumbling hellish cadence of Duke Swallows.
“FLY WITH ME, SINNER!” he said and pointed a finger at Nikolai Chekov.
And it was that exact moment, that infinitesimal beat of a second, that Nikolai Chekov realized that indeed, he had been filled with folly, and had made a very grave mistake!
