EPISODE 32
Yaw Boat crossed the wooden bridge and then entered the woods.
The silence closed in around him as he walked deeper into the foreboding confines of the forest. The path was cleared and tended for easy passage, broad enough for two cars to move comfortably along. Thick trees hedged the road and now they were thick with an impenetrable darkness.
Suddenly, all the trees disappeared, just like that, and a silvery moon emerged in a pitch-black sky, casting a look of silver on the wide space. The cabin could be seen in the far distance. Two of its windows were open, and glowing with the lights from inside. A yellowish glare that almost seemed like eyes, beckoned Yaw Boat to a date with raw evil.
The path had now become a straight walk to that dark cabin and so Boat began to trudge along just fine. And then, quite suddenly, a white grave appeared in front of him and he came to a sudden stop with an indrawn breath. He felt the chill in the air suddenly, a cold that seeped through his clothes and settled directly on his skin as if he were naked. He tried to fight down the terror but to no avail as he heard a strange sound all around him. It was the chilling sound of a baby crying softly and a little girl singing to soothe the baby.
Against his will, Yaw Boat swivelled around as he felt a slight breeze on the nape of his neck, but he faced only deep gloom behind him. It was almost as if the darkness was following his every step because the paths were illuminated in front of him, but there was only thick darkness behind him.
The singing came again as the baby cried and he turned back around and saw to his horror that the white grave in front of him was open now but he could not yet see what was inside. He tried to move around it but there was no way around it. It felt as if an invisible wall was pressing in on him, preventing him to move into the wide space on each side of him and forcing him to walk slowly toward the open grave.
Yaw Boat was sweating now in spite of the chill. His lips were as dry as sandpaper and his heart was beginning to yammer rather badly in his chest. His legs were quite unsteady as he walked to the edge of the grave and looked inside.
There was a little girl sitting in the coffin. She was wearing a white but dirtied dress. Her skin was completely white and so was her face. Her eyes were white but her teeth were red spiky things as if they were covered with blood. On her laps was a little baby which was also completely white.
“My brother is hungry!” the girl whispered in a hissing evil voice. “Do you want to feed him? He loves blood!”
The baby opened his eyes and looked at Boat. His eyes were very black just like his teeth.
“Bloooooood!” the baby gurgled. “Blooooood!”
“Come inside here, mister!” the girl whispered. “It is comfy in here. Veeeeery cooomfy!”
Yaw Boat was petrified with horror as he looked inside the grave with spinning sight. He felt so weak all of a sudden and for a moment he thought he was falling into the grave until it dawned on him suddenly that he was not falling but the girl was rather soaring slowly up toward him!
With a shudder of horror Boat jumped across the grave and began to run.
“Wait, mister!” the girl’s voice crooned behind him. “My brother wants to feeeeeeeed!”
“Feeeeeeeed!” the baby hissed in the darkness behind him. “Blooooood!”
Boat ran as fast as his legs could carry him but as fast as he ran it dawned on him that the cabin only seemed to recede as if he was rather running away from it!
Breathing hard, he slowed down his insane running to a trot and finally to a brisk walking when he realized that the sounds of the girl and the baby were not behind him anymore.
The cabin seemed to become bigger as he walked but receded when he ran or trotted, and so he slowed his pace to a fast walk. His whole being screamed against his walk and he had a great urge to keep on running from the evil, but it was better to walk, he knew.
He took a deep breath and steeled his nerves to move on.
And that was when the hands began to rub him on the back of his neck!
Yaw Boat stopped and swivelled around with a gasp and immediately he saw about six hands emerging from the darkness behind him and rushing at his face and neck.
He groaned with terror and took fast steps backward away from the hands and then he tripped and fell down! But he did not fall on the ground! He fell into the arms of a cold, dead woman on the ground!
It was as if the corpse was decomposing because it felt so squelchy and spongy with a hideous stink!
Yaw Boat screamed then with fear and fought desperately to get to his feet, but the corpse moaned and her eyes flew open.
“It’s so coooooold here!” the corpse crooned into his ears with evil intensity. “You will keep me company!”
Her skin was peeling off now to reveal the skeletal remains of her body. Boat screamed and struggled and soon both the arms of the women came out of their sockets with sharp plopping sounds!
He gained his feet finally and ran helplessly as the darkness closed on him from behind. He saw that one of the dead woman’s hands, still attached to its arm, was draped around his neck. With a shudder he pulled it off and threw it away. He slowed down after a while when he realized the cabin had moved away from him again and he stopped completely and gulped in lungful after lungful of tepid air. This could continue the whole night, he knew now. Breaking into panicked runs would always keep that cabin out of his reach, so the sanest thing to do now was to take anything in his stride and strive to remain calm through the madness all around him.
“Do youush remembershhh meeesh?” came the sudden eerie, horrible and terrifying whisper of a nightmarish voice behind him! A voice from his past, from a nightmare long forgotten! It was the voice that had reigned supreme in his nightmares more than a year ago when he had first been given the power of the second sight!
Funky Grounds had come alive again!
Yaw Boat forced himself not to panic as the wet, scary fingers caressed the back of his neck from behind, and the ghostly voice now whispered directly into his ears.
“Do youuuush remembershhhh meeesh?”
He walked fast but did not run as the horrible voice tittered behind him, and then suddenly he saw the signboard which comprised of a wooden board nailed to stake, bearing the image of a bleeding skull with crossed bones beneath it, and then just around the bend he saw the rotten girl!
One side of her face was absolutely rotten and filled with squirming worms, and she raised a rotten finger and pointed to something behind Yaw Boat, telling him that there was something really fiendish and horrible behind him!
Boat felt sudden pain as scary fingers suddenly lashed brutally into his back, breaking through his T-shirt and drawing down his back painfully! The fingers felt like knives and they opened up long, jagged wounds on his back that made the warm blood spill down, but he gritted his teeth against the pain and continued to walk on past the signboard and then the rotten girl.
He walked on with blood seeping down his back, but the cabin was closer now. The weather had become very heavy now so that he found it a bit hard to breathe. It had become humid too, causing sweat to break out on his face and arms.
And then, suddenly, he saw an old man standing in front of him!
He was naked and completely white with blazing red eyes. He was gliding slowly toward Boat with hands fumbling in front of him like a visually impaired person. His mouth was opened wide showing horrible, decaying dentures and terrifying squirming creatures inside that mouth!
Boat’s first inclination was to turn around and flee, but he stood still and clamped his teeth tightly together as the ghostly figure moved toward him. He tried to move to either side of him, but that invisible barrier was still there, preventing him from moving off the road…and then the old man was on him!
The moment he made contact with Boat he flew into a frenzy! The old man screeched horribly and his hands flailed with vengeful hatred at Boat’s face and body, striking and tearing! Boat instinctively put his hands across his face to protect his eyes, and then thankfully the figure passed along.
Boat resumed walking.
His attention was suddenly caught by something on his left, and when he turned his head and squinted, he saw that it was a tall slender figure with a white hoodie. It was holding a scythe and making a horrible gurgling sounds as it glided toward the path. Behind him were distinct white sparks! Its face was sheer evil as it glared at Boat, and it was evident that it was moving forward to cut off Yaw Boat’s journey to the cabin.
It stopped moving when Boat looked at it, fixing its evil stare squarely on Boat. Again, Boat felt that desperate inclination to break into a run, but he steeled himself and walked on. He looked ahead and saw that the cabin was nearer than he had ever been to it, and he almost cried with the relief he felt.
He looked at the hooded figure with the deadly scythe again and saw that it had also come a bit closer but it stayed absolutely still when Boat looked at it!
And it struck Yaw Boat then!
That infernal devilish entity moved only when Boat was not looking!
And it was moving to cut him off! Its scythe looked really long, curved and horrible and Boat had no doubts that one swipe from it could lay his stomach open!
And so, Yaw Boat kept his eyes on it!
It hissed fiercely and furiously at Boat, making hideous expressions at him that almost forced Boat to drop his gaze, but he kept walking on and staring at that freak!
Then, to his horror, a huge cemetery appeared to his right filled with row after row of white gravestones! Boat gasped and almost stumbled again when the gravestones began to break, one after the other, and horrible, rotting zombies began to emerge from the graves!
Boat turned his head desperately and saw that the figure with the scythe had moved closer to the path when Boat’s attention had been distracted! He stared at the thing fixedly, but soon his desperation caused him to glance at the cemetery again!
Rotting zombie-like figures had emerged from the graves and were shuffling toward him with outstretched hands! Their bodies were peeling off their faces and limbs! Their clothes were torn at several places, and most of them even had skulls for heads! They were moaning and screeching as they came, their eyes a sickly sea of green that struck terror into Boat’s heart!
“Huuuuuunnnngrrrryyyyyy!” they droned horribly!
Yaw Boat walked faster!
It was a herculean task preventing himself from breaking into another panicked flight. He looked at the sinister, slender, hooded figure on the left and saw that it was closer to the path again, and its evil eyes were fixed balefully on him!
The first batch of horrible zombies had reached the side of the road now, and they stopped, forming a sort of cordon on the right side of the road with their hands outstretched as they slashed viciously at Yaw Boat. He saw that they were made up of men, women and children!
They slashed furiously at Boat with their evil hands, wounding his face and the right side of his body! He tried to keep to the left side as closely as possible to avoid their flailing hands.
Boat was shivering with terror as more and more zombies joined the screeching horde and they attacked him relentlessly! He looked to his left and saw that the hooded evil was again closer! Boat, tired, scared, shivering and scared, almost stopped, but he saw that the cabin was bigger and closer now…so he moved on!
Thankfully, he soon came to the last of the zombies which was a snarling, vicious little boy with huge teeth! He grabbed Boat’s left leg and tried to bite him! With a bellow of fear, Yaw Boat jumped back and kicked viciously into his face, and had the satisfaction of seeing it tumbling backwards.
He looked at the apparition with the scythe and saw that it was much closer now. This time Yaw Boat kept his eyes on it and it stopped. He was aware that the next distraction could bring that evil thing very close to the path, and he could not allow that to happen!
He kept staring at the thing even when it made horrible, furious gestures at him. Boat could feel hidden hands on the ground now trying to hold his feet and keep him still. Boat moaned and stomped hard as he walked in a bid to crush those horrible hands trying to tear him up, and he kept his eyes fixed hard on that entity.
He quickened his steps towards the cabin and suddenly he saw a man sitting beside the side of the road and weeping pathetically! The man was wearing a long white gown and his head was bent as he wailed silently and violently. Boat took one glance and then immediately looked at the figure with the scythe.
He had moved closer still in the blink of an eye!
Boat kept his eyes on the freak even though he was aware that the man who was still crying had now gotten to his feet and was reaching out to him.
“Son, my prince, my precious son…help me!”
The voice was so explosive in his heart that Boat stopped walking immediately and looked into the shattered, desperate face of the figure staring at him!
Unmistakable voice!
Unmistakable figure!
Cherished face, dear cherished man!
Joe Boat!
His father!
“Help me, son!” Joe Boat whispered. “Oh, I missed you so horribly, my dearest son!”
And Yaw Boat came to a halt completely and his whole expression was on his father.
“Pappy!” Boat whimpered in a lost, childlike voice which was choked with emotion, and then his shoulders heaved as great tears streamed down his face!
