Diamond ended the call and put off her bedside lamp. She went over the day’s activities in her mind, as usual, assessing if she had done what she set out to do and if she carried out her duty with the utmost professionalism. She went through this routine every day to identify which areas of her activities especially as a nurse needed improvement. With a sigh, he pulled the sheets around her and turned on her side and drifted off to sleep.
The ringtone of her phone woke her and for a moment she was confused because she was still in a slumber of sorts. She picked the call and answered in a sleepy voice.
“Good evening dear, it looks like I woke you up. So sorry about that. I was trying to reach Rachael, a friend’s sister to deliver an important message,” a deep, pleasant male voice responded.
“I’m sorry, it looks like you called the wrong number. I’m not Rachael and this is my phone.”
“Sorry once again for the mistake. Enjoy your sleep,” the male voice said.
“That’s okay. Goodbye,” Diamond said and cut the call and went back to sleep.
The moment her head hit the pillow, her phone rang again.
Thinking it was the same guy that had called earlier, she let it ring unanswered but the caller kept calling unabated.
She switched on the bedside lamp and picked the call. It was Demel. He was at her gate. Diamond looked at the time and shook her head in disappointment, it was past midnight.
She got out of bed and staggered sleepily to the main gate. Everywhere was quiet. Apparently, every human being was asleep but her lover picked that time of day to pay her a visit. She reluctantly opened the gates for him to drive in and secured the locks.
Demel was standing by the car door when she caught up with him with his arms stretched out wide. Diamond reluctantly walked into his embrace.
“There, I told you I will see you. Ain’t I a darling?”
Diamond pulled away when her nostrils were assailed with the smell of alcohol and other spices from pork kebab he had eaten.
“You didn’t have to drive in that state and at this time of day just to keep your word to me. It is quite dangerous out there, you know,” Diamond said as she tried to keep her acute disappointment out of her voice.
“Oh, is that how you welcome a loved one who had gone through thick and thin to be with you? Don’t do this, Diamond. You know I adore you. I miss you so much,” Demel said as he tried to pull Diamond closer aiming to clamp his lips on hers.
Diamond pulled free and spoke a little angrily.
“You are not kissing me like this, Demel. You are drunk. Let’s go inside and sleep. Tomorrow, we shall talk.”
“Talk, talk, talk! That’s all you do. Why have you changed so much, Diamond? I can’t even kiss you when I see you?”
‘That’s not it and you know it. You are not kissing me when you are that drunk. Come, let’s go inside. The neighbours are sleeping.”
“Neighbours, drunk, they are all excuses. If you don’t kiss me, I’m going to scream my head off. Then, I will tell everyone you find me repulsive and so you don’t want to kiss me even though I sacrificed to be here at this time of day. I could have died out there, you know.” Demel countered with all the seriousness in the world.
“Come inside, please,” Diamond implored as she stared at the one person who stirred up feelings she never knew existed in her and wondered if he was the same person she met not too long ago. She would have sent him out of her house had he been sober but only God knew what would befall him if she let him out in that state. She was going to allow him to spend the night at her place and then they would have a serious talk. Things just could not continue like this.
“I need a kiss from my wife-to-be, is that too much to ask?”
Diamond walked into his arms and kissed him briefly.
“Was that too hard?” Demel asked with a grin and staggered inside. He sunk onto the sofa, still grinning, “I’m really sorry, Diamond. I know I’m a mess. Please forgive me.”
Diamond left him for less than five minutes to draw the bath for him with the hope that a bath would sober him up a bit. When she got back, Demel was out cold.
She removed his shoes gingerly and arranged his body comfortably on the sofa. She switched on the aircon, dashed to the bedroom for a cover sheet and came back to the living room. And she looked at him sadly as she covered him with the cloth. Diamond could not understand why an intelligent young doctor with so much promise would want to throw away his life like that.
She did not mind him drinking once in a while even though she hated alcohol to the maximum degree but the way he was doing it now left much to be desired. She put off the light and went back to the bedroom. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she lay down to sleep.

Diamond came awake when she felt a body move closer to her under the sheets behind her. Pleasant scents from the bath gel coupled with the scented herbs permeated through the air around her. Demel, freshly showered, moved closer and planted a kiss between her neck and shoulder area.
“I’m so very sorry for driving in like that last night. I know it was very irresponsible. Please do forgive me.”
Diamond turned to look at him with teary eyes but said nothing. She was not sure why she felt so betrayed by Demel’s behaviour these past months. She wondered what might have happened to the Demel she met and fell in love with. Nowadays she had this unpleasant buzz that she was with a stranger, a version of the man she had fallen in love with.
All they do these days was fight about one thing or the other. She was kind of tired of hearing him apologize time and again for the same thing. It looked to her that their beautiful relationship had sunk somewhere along the line, and like the Titanic, there seems to be no help coming their way any time soon.
“Aren’t you going to say anything? I’m truly sorry, my star!”
“I honestly don’t know what to say, Demel. This is not the first or second time you are apologizing for the same thing, it makes me wonder if you really mean it or you are just saying sorry to stop an argument on this.”
“Come on, Diamond. You know I’m not faking it; I really do love you and I’m ashamed I came to you drunk. I’m sorry, okay?”
“I don’t know what to say anymore, Demel. I really don’t.”
“What are you trying to say, love? Given up on us already? Are you looking for an excuse to break up with me? Is this what this is all about?”
“Don’t try changing the subject, Demel. Your behaviour is distasteful. You are a doctor for crying out loud. People look up to you and there are ethics, standards to keep. You are going to land into big trouble if you continue the way you are going.”
“Oh, cut me some slack, will you? I’m not that dumb, you know. I know who I am and what society expects from me so stop making it look like I’m stupid. I don’t drink during work hours and you know it.”
“What happens when there is an emergency and you are called after work hours. Will you be able to do what you pledged to do: save lives at all times?” Diamond said as she got out of the bed, a little angry with the whole situation and especially with Demel’s attitude towards the problem. She did not find the fact that he was trying to sweep it under the carpet amusing at all. She pulled her morning robe over her nightie as she headed for the living room.
Demel moved quickly and came to stand in front of her, blocking her a few steps away from the bed.
She sighed and tried to change course but he will not let her. He held her arms as he looked into her eyes pleadingly.
“I know I’ve disappointed you greatly that’s why I’m begging for your forgiveness. If it’s any consolation, I don’t take alcohol when I’m on call,” he said as he dropped to his knees.
Diamond stayed rooted to the spot for a while, words failing her.
She felt like she had had enough of the bad boy attitude Demel had been exhibiting for a while now. They seemed to have hit a big rock in the relationship and nothing was working anymore. But when he got so emotional and repentant, she just could not stay mad at him. She took a long look at his handsome face and also at the sincerity of his feelings, and she was so touched she closed her eyes and did not even see him get to his feet slowly.
Demel inched closer to her and gathered her into his strong arms and just held her as he whispered into her ears.
“I’m so sorry, Diamond, I really am!”
Hot tears fell from Diamond’s closed eyes in torrents. Demel had tears in his eyes too as he lowered his face and brushed his lips against hers gently. Diamond’s lips finally parted to receive his kiss after Demel probed with his tongue for a while. Although it tasted salty from the tears she had shed for him out of a broken heart, the kiss seemed to be the healing balm she had hoped for. It was long and sweet, but most importantly, it held a promise; that everything was going to be alright.
***
Diamond felt on top of the world. She was having the best time of her life. The past weeks had been simply magical. Demel had spent all the two weeks with her and he had taken her out every time she was off duty. He had made her feel loved, needed and cherished in a way every woman dreamt of. Their special bond had been restored and fortified. She really felt loved and her love for Demel had soared to unimaginable heights.
She was standing with a contented smile on her face on the balcony of the plush hotel Demel had booked for them which overlooked the beach. Diamond was enjoying the rhythm from the rain as it tapped gently on the roof of the beautiful hotel they had checked into a night previously.
Demel had urged her to take a week off to make it possible for them to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and had driven her all the way to Takoradi with stopovers at various tourist sites. They had set off from Accra around eleven in the morning and due to unusual traffic they had met on their way, they had decided to check in at a resort at the White Sands Beach.
She loved the quiet atmosphere and the beach. Diamond had always had a soft spot for beaches. They had taken a long walk down the shore and she had particularly liked the breeze that caressed her bare hands and the intermittent kisses she received from her prince charming. They had a late lunch in one of the huts on the beach and had retired to bed shortly after taking a long shower that day and ended up making love in the night and cuddled off to sleep afterwards.
Demel had dragged her out of bed early in the morning as they continued their road-trip as he termed it. They had made the first stopover at Kakum National Park. It was Diamond’s first time at the park. The park is along the Jukwa Road roughly twenty miles north of Cape Coast and Elmina. The had arrived early enough to see most of the wildlife the park could boast off.
Diamond was intimidated by the Canopy walkway which went over seven bridges and treetops at a hundred feet above ground level but with encouragement from the love of her life, she had managed to get to the finish line of the walkway. They stopped at a restaurant nearby to grab a bite and then continued their historic road-trip.
When Demel turned the car into the car park of the Cape Coast Castle, Diamond was left with a feeling of sadness. This always happened when she visited any of the castles. She remembered crying like a baby the first time their school had organised an excursion to the Cape Coast Castle. Because Demel’s objective for the trip was to make her happy, they had just gone through a few of the places and dragged her out to the car when he noticed traces of tears in her beautiful eyes. They then made the final stopover at the Elimina Beach and watched the fishermen go about their business. Diamond loved the beach and then after a while on the road they had entered Takoradi.
Demel had bounced into action and taken her to his favourite places. He had been raised in Takoradi and he always told her fond memories he had of the place. They stopped at his favourite waakye joint and Diamond was not disappointed since the waakye was the best she had ever tasted. He also took her to the harbour and other interesting places before finally checking into the finest hotel ever on the beach.
It was dinnertime by the time they checked in. Demel had left her in the room for a couple of minutes and came to announce that dinner was served.
They both changed into fresh clothes and headed to the destination for their dinner and Diamond was pleasantly surprised when Demel led her to an open space close to the shore. The moon was up and it reflected nicely on the vast sea before them.
A table for two had been set in the middle of the open space near the shore. A number of perfumed candles have been arranged in an oval shape leaving an entrance of sorts for them to go through to the table.
Demel drew the chair for her and kissed her on both cheeks when she sat down and hurried to his seat. He offered a short prayer and with limited light from the stars and candles, the two inseparable love birds had dinner in the open close to the seashore. It was a very magical moment and by the time dinner was over, they both could not wait to explore each other’s bodies as their desire for each other became almost unbearable.
They hit the shower after dinner with kisses and caresses as they soaped and sponged each other playfully, seductively and longingly. By the time they got out of the shower, Demel’s raging member was standing tall and proud and Diamond’s eyes had become smaller from the deep desire she felt for the one man who could make her body sing in unimaginable harmony with just a touch.
Demel carried her to the bed as he kissed her, again and again, making her moan sweetly. He laid her down gently, still keeping eye contact and holding on to the special spell that seemed to be cast on them. He kissed her nipples, making Diamond give out a little cry of pleasure, as her desire for him became like a pain in her throat. She needed him inside her. She had been tortured enough.
Diamond took hold of Demel’s joystick and rubbed it gently in her hand, working from the tip to the crown. Demel groaned as if he was passing out from the pleasure that swept through him. When Diamond tried to guide his joystick to meet her craving citadel, he slid down between her thighs, parted them gently and tasted her sweetness with relish.
Diamond felt hot and cold as if fire and ice were passing through her simultaneously. For a split moment, she felt her heart missing a beat, as her body and mind sung in harmony and her body cried out her desire. She could not take it anymore and begged him to make love to her or she would go crazy.
Demel moved up in frenzy and clammed his lips on hers as she directed his member to her overly lubricated and crying citadel.
It was the most powerful experience for both of them as Demel’s thrusts became stronger and deeper, making her want him more and deeper. She moved in rhythm to his thrusts, meeting him halfway and wishing it will never end.
Diamond’s heart sung melodiously as he guided her to the very top of the mountain of ecstasy and the night air was filled with their moans of joy when they hit the summit in unison.
Diamond closed her eyes as she re-lived that wonderful and powerful experience. It was raining heavily now. A hand came around her from behind and she shivered with pleasure just by the touch. That was one thing that had never changed between them; the powerful effect they have on each other.
