EPISODE 27
[passster password=”hweaballz”]Rupert saw Eyram on four continuous days when they returned to Takoradi.
Since she was still on leave, he passed through her apartment each evening before going to the official residence allotted him by the Ghana government.
Within those days, it finally dawned on Rupert that this Ghanaian lady was the woman for him. What he felt for her was not something he had ever felt for any woman.
She was fun to be with, and she set his heart on fire. On two occasions he took along Chinese fast food, and on two occasions she cooked for him, a local dish of banku and okra soup, and a continental dish she told him she learned from an Italian friend.
Her cooking was perfect too.
Her laugh filled his heart, and he loved nothing than sitting back and watching her. He craved for her in a way he had never craved for any woman, and by the end of the fourth day he knew that he was going to propose to her very soon.
She knew she did not want to leave Ghana, and was not particularly keen on dating a foreigner, but he could sort that out. He was a valued Interpol agent, and if he asked to have a sub-station in Africa to monitor the ever-expanding operations of drug cartels, he was sure he would be granted that office.
He would then be in Ghana mainly, and would travel only in emergencies or special missions. Rupert was ready to make that sacrifice because, without a doubt, he loved her.
He was convinced she felt the same way for him. Her extreme happiness on seeing him was not something she could feign that effectively. She called him or left messages at intervals of the day.
And her kisses.
She could not seem to get enough, and stayed mostly in his arms when he was with her.
Rupert was happy in ways he had never known, and he was loving each minute of it.
On the fifth day they decided to have dinner at an exclusive Turkish restaurant in town.
Rupert brought his dinner suit to the office, and closed early to get ready for their night. He was so excited. He had this fluttering feeling in his belly each time he thought about her. This was the night for him, their night.
He got dressed with care, and nestling in the inner pocket of his tuxedo was a diamond-encrusted ring he had purchased from a jewellery store the previous day. He was going to propose to her, yes, and then tell her of his plans to make a home in Ghana, precisely Takoradi, if she would be his wife.
The ring was exquisite, utterly sensational, and he was sure she would love it.
He changed in the sleeping quarters of his office, and when he surveyed himself in the mirror, he liked what he saw.
When he came out of his office and walked through the general office, the operatives looked at him and started chuckling and followed him with screaming catcalls. He did not begrudge them their fun; he didn’t remember the last time he had put on formal clothes, or looked this resplendent.
Toby and Rick stepped out of the elevator when he got to the corridor.
They smiled when they saw him, but he saw that they looked very uneasy.
“You look like a president, boss,” Toby said with a chuckle. “Real flashy, better than Brad Pitt.”
“Straight outta Prince Charming factory,” Rick added, and both laughed.
Rupert smiled.
“Important night for me, guys,” he said.
“Hold up, boss,” Rick said quickly. “Something came up.”
Rupert raised his eyebrows.
“Something that can’t wait till later?” he asked softly. “This night is special to me, guys. I don’t want it ruined.”
“Won’t take more than a couple of minutes,” Toby said and sighed. “We lost two of the drones, boss.”
Rupert’s face went cold as he stared at them.
The ‘drones’ were the six people who were laundering money for the drug baron, Ruffalo Sacchi. Rupert and his team had secretly approached them and set them up to record Ruffalo secretly and help in the man’s capture.
And now two of them were dead!
“Who and who?” Rupert asked softly.
“The importer, Richard Abesim, and Pascaline Tapoli,” Rick said. “Mr. Abesim went fishing in his canoe early today at Akosombo. He drowned, obviously. Police are putting it down to heart failure that turned fatal because he fell into the river.”
“And the woman?” Rupert asked coldly.
“Gas explosion this afternoon in her house,” Rick said. “Died on the spot.”
“Shit!” Rupert said and punched the wall savagely. “Shit!”
“Ruffalo knocked them off,” Toby said. “Seems he now knows about the taps and bugs. But how? Were they careless?”
“They were scared to death of that bastard,” Rick said softly. “And Ruffalo is a suspicious son-of-a-bitch. Might have put two and two together. Means the others are not safe.”
“Deactivate their taps and bugs immediately,” Rupert said as he rubbed his forehead rapidly. “I don’t know what they might have told Sacchi, but I’m assuming he’s now aware of how close we are. Shit! I killed them, damn it!”
“Hey, boss, don’t take no blame here!” Toby said in a worried voice. “They decided to pitch in with a fucking drug lord knowing the consequences could be lethal!”
Rupert’s face was filled with pain and fury.
“What now, boss?” Rick asked.
“Nothing, boys,” Rupert said with a resigned voice. “Deactivate the bugs and lie low for now. Take extra precaution. That madman is on the prowl.”
“But we’re gonna get him, right?” Toby insisted.
Rupert’s face tightened.
“You bet we would,” he said savagely. “Ruffalo just committed his last hurrah, the motherfucker!”
He marched angrily into the elevator and punched the metal doors furiously as they slid close.
***
Rupert was more than angry.
He was feeling the crushing waves of guilt at the murders of the two drones, especially Pascaline Tapoli.
That elderly woman had just been filled with greed and her lust for young, virile men. But she had been full of life, and Ruffalo had snuffed out that life violently, in his usual grim fashion, just to send a warning to others.
And, knowing Ruffalo, that woman might have suffered horribly before her death! Ruffalo might have tortured her to get the last information out of her!
“Shit, shit!” he shouted and pounded the steering wheel with a fist repeatedly.
He had a respite for his guilt and fury only when Eyram got into the car.
Wearing a simple black flowing dress and long-heeled shoes, she took his breath away. He got out of the car and took her in his arms. Their kiss was slow and tender.
“Lord, girl, you’re so beautiful,” he whispered with deep passion. “You ignite fire in my blood, and stoke great love in my heart.”
She chuckled and kissed him again slowly.
“You’re spoiling me, Rupe,” she whispered. “Please, don’t try to fuck me, okay? I might not be able to resist you, but I want this thing between us to be just right before I eat you whole.”
He breathed with happiness and nibbled at her left ear.
“It is already right, Ram,” he said tenderly.
She laughed and stepped back.
“Now you ruined my lipstick,” she said. “Got to apply it again.”
“Why bother?” he asked as he opened the door of the car for her. “It is more than likely that I’ll continue messing it up.”
She laughed again.
“You’re a naughty man, South Africa,” she said.
And the evening was splendid, the best evening each had had in a long time.
The food at the Turkish restaurant was superb, and later they discovered they had mutual taste in dancing, and they danced to love songs on the dance floor.
They ended up at the Harbour View spot, and spent heavenly minutes on the terraces looking at the breath-taking harbour at night. When Eyram shivered, Rupert asked if she was cold and wanted to go back home, but she shook her head and laughed happily.
“I’m too happy to go home, Rupe,” she said and leaned across to kiss the sides of his lips. “I want this night to last forever. It is a very special night for me, because you’re with me.”
Rupert took off his coat and draped it across her shoulders to keep the chill from the sea from her skin. He took her in his arms and looked into her eyes with love and passion so deep that she stopped laughing and looked at him with wonder.
“Rupe,” she whispered softly. “There are a lot of people here.”
“Well, they can go to hell,” he whispered, and his heart was thudding.
This felt like the moment to take the ring and go down on his knee. It was indeed a magical night, and he was going to do just that. First, though, he needed a kiss.
His head dropped, and she linked her arms around his neck to receive his sweet kiss.
It was a kiss that seared their souls, making them tuned into each other.
It was so sweet and poignant that Rupert wanted it to go on forever, and it probably would have lasted a long time if that abrasive, hurt voice had not intruded in their magic.
“Irie!” the voice almost screamed behind Rupert. “Irie, Jesus! Is that you, Irie? Jesus!”
Rupert felt Eyram tensing in his arms, and his heart suddenly flipped with alarm. That could not be right, he thought dully. This could not be right! Why had she reacted that way?
A hard hand clamped down on Rupert’s shoulder and pushed him back savagely. Rupert turned with the momentum and saw a man in his late twenties or early thirties standing in front of him.
He was of medium height, and had a nice athletic body. He was dressed in fetching blue shirt and dark trousers. His lovely tie was loose, and the first two buttons of the shirt were undone.
He was handsome in a rugged sort of way, and his furious eyes glared at Rupert with intense hatred.
Behind him were about four young men and three women.
“Irie!” the man cried again as he tried to shove Rupert aside. “What’s the meaning of this, Irie? Damn it!”
Eyram was staring at the man as if she had seen a ghost.
“Allan?” she whispered with great shock, and her lips trembled.
Rupert’s heart throbbed with pain at the expression he saw on Eyram’s face.
“Yes, me, Allan!” the man said, his expression filled with pain. “I’ve been looking all over Takoradi for you, Irie! Where have you been, my darling?”
He was almost crying as he tried to push Rupert aside.
Rupert knocked the man’s hand off his chest.
“You piece of shit!” Allan said furiously and aimed a savage fist at Rupert’s head. Rupert side-stepped the blow and put a hand on the man’s chest and pushed, at the same time lodging a foot behind the man’s leg.
He tumbled and crashed to the ground.
“Rupe, no, please!” Eyram shouted in alarm.
The young man shouted with fury and bounced to his feet. He picked up a heavy bar stool and swung it at Rupert’s head.
Rupert side-stepped again and smashed a fist into the man’s face. He wailed with pain and crashed down. A corner of his lips was cut, and he started bleeding.
“Stop it, Rupe!” Eyram shouted and pushed Rupert back. “You’ll hurt him!”
Rupert’s heart was filled with pain as he looked at her.
She was bent over the man, her face concerned and still shocked.
The man scrambled to his feet with a face filled with love, passion and a little fear.
“Oh, Irie, forgive me, forgive me!” he wailed as he held her arms. “I was such a fool! But I came back just for you, my love, my darling! I missed you so much and I realized I couldn’t live without you! I don’t care about the babies, my love! Just stay with me, and let me love you again, please!”
“Oh, Allan,” Eyram whispered with tears in her eyes. “Don’t do this to me, not now, not again, please!”
Allan pulled her into his arms and kissed her desperately.
At that moment, Rupert almost killed an innocent man!
The pain and the raw murderous rage in him made his hands turn into claws, and for a very strong moment he almost ripped the young man to pieces.
But he was a professional, trained to always breathe and keep his rage in check, and so he turned without another word and moved rapidly through the throng of staring people.
He walked straight to his car and got in.
His heart was tearing up, and he could barely breathe.
This, he realized finally, was the pain of love, the torture of love, something he had never experienced until this very moment.
He reversed the car with a squeal of tyres, and just as he was executing the turn, his headlights picked up Eyram.
She had come running out of the place, and behind her was the young man, and he was screaming out her name. Rupert applied the brakes and waited for her to move out of the way.
Her expression was cut up with acute pain as she walked lethargically to the side of the door. Rupert sighed with agony and slowly wound down the window. Eyram, face flushed with pain, tears swimming in her eyes, knelt slowly beside the door.
“Please, Rupe, I’m sorry,” she whispered painfully.
“Why didn’t you tell me about him?” he asked softly.
“Because, he didn’t matter,” she said painfully.
“Obviously, he does,” Rupert said, and the pain shot through his heart like little spears.
“I met him when I was eighteen,” Eyram said softly. “His name is Allan Davidson. We loved each other fiercely. four years into the relationship, I summoned courage to inform him that I’ll never be able to have children.”
He scowled slightly.
“And why’s that, Ram?” he asked.
“The story I told you, about what my Uncle Tim did to Effe and me, when we were fifteen,” Eyram said and brushed tears from her cheeks. “I got a horrible infection that almost killed me. It affected my womb, you know, because I got pregnant without knowing it, but the foetus was attached at a wrong place, and it led to a serious infection. In the long run, the only way to save my life was to remove my womb.”
Rupert’s anger dissipated at that very moment.
This girl had been through hell, indeed. She and her sister had known horror at its most evil. His love for her soared, and he slowly reached out and touched her cheek.
“Don’t touch her, you bastard!” Allan’s voice came from behind her.
Eyram turned and fixed him with a scathing look.
“Shut up, Allan,” she said softly. “Just shut up!”
She turned again and looked at Rupert with pain on her face.
“He…he freaked out when I told him that I couldn’t have his children,” Eyram continued softly. “His parents would not have it…and so…and so he…”
“He left you,” Rupert said gently, and Eyram bowed her head and nodded.
“I decided not to get into any relationship, ever,” she whispered tremulously. “I loved him so much. It hurt me a lot, and for three years I was nursing a broken heart until you came along!”
Rupert nodded and forced out a sad smile.
“Do you still love him?” he asked softly.
“Oh, Rupe!” she wailed and reached inside to touch his hand. “I don’t know! Seeing him again…I just don’t know. He went abroad to further his studies…and told me it was over, that he was sorry for hurting me. I understood him…but now, he claims he came back for me…that he can’t live without me…oh, Rupe!”
“It’s okay, Ram,” Rupert forced himself to say.
“No, no, please, don’t!” she whispered. “Your work won’t allow you to stay here in Ghana, Rupe! I can’t go with you on your journeys…and it would be so wrong to ask you to stay here in Ghana!”
“Don’t worry about it, Ram,” Rupert said softly, and now he felt tears in his eyes as the pain tore him to shreds. “I just want you to be happy, my love. If it is with him, so be it!”
She wiped tears from her eyes and shook her head sadly.
“Please, Rupe, open the door,” she said. “I’m coming with you.”
“Irie, damn, please!” Allan cried with pain behind her. “We have to talk. So many things to say.”
“Allan!” she said sharply and turned around. “Not now, not today! I owe this man that much!”
“Don’t worry, Ram,” Rupert said thickly as a tear rolled down his cheek. “Have a good life.”
And then he stepped on the accelerator.
“Rupert!” Eyram screamed and got to her feet, weeping pathetically, but he joined the main road and sped off.
She moved after him, and Rupert’s coat which he had covered her with fell off her shoulders. Allan Davidson, muttering angrily, bent to pick it up, and his hand touched something hard within. Eyram was still walking dejectedly towards the main road, defeated and broken, and Allan looked at her surreptitiously as he dug his hand into the inner coat pocket and fished out the exquisite glass box containing the engagement ring.
“You fuck!” he whispered savagely. “Oh, fuck you!”
He put the box into his pocket, bunched up the coat, and was about to throw it far away when Eyram’s voice cut through him like a whiplash.
“Allan!” she said, walking dejectedly towards him. “Don’t you dare!”
She took the coat from her.
Allan Davidson put his arms around her. She wept and clung to him. He smoothed her hair and ran a hand down her back reassuringly.
“It’s okay, baby, honey, my dearest love,” he whispered tenderly. “I’m here, darling. And I’m not going anywhere again!”
And in his car, Rupert did something he had never done in fifteen years since his mother died…
He didn’t cry, no, he was too matured and too broad-minded to cry. He had had his share of pain and disappointments. And he was a realist, and knew life was a bitch sometimes, and that it could spring the most lethal of twists when everything seemed destined for a certain course.
So, realistically, Rupert did not cry. He was too much of man to cry, and so he viewed it as the tears rather forcing their way down his cheeks. It was not him crying, no…just the tears falling by itself against his will.
