Stop this concert and talk to me because as you are seeing me here am very annoyed and the way I’m charged up erh, if I get hold of that Michael of a boy the way I will discipline him erh his family won’t even recognise him. How could he subject that pretty lady to such beating like that? Was he thinking he was fighting his fellow man or what? If you saw the lady’s face as she was leaving the house like you might mistake her for Ayitey Powers after receiving a massive beating from Bukom Banku.

Dennis this way that you are showing much interest in the beating, hope you don’t have your eyes for that lady?

Oh, that one, I clear her already and she will even come and sign this evening also. You know I don’t waste time when women play in my territory, that girl is something else my brother, you need to see how she twist and whine her waist when she on top of me. My brother never underestimate those sellers, I mean banku seller, orange seller, egg seller, groundnut seller, wakye seller, koko seller, tiger nut (atadwe) seller and not forgetting those who sell the local medicines. Well, let me give you a breakdown of the whole thing, you see I have been firing the house girl of my boss also and the gateman also does fire her. On the other hand, the orange seller is also a customer of the gateman who has been sleeping with him like 6months now, I have caught them like 3times even as they were doing it. Good morning officer please I want to lodge an assault complain but first I want to know if my uncle the commander is in his office?

Officer

He is not in at the moment but you can call him and find out his current location if you have his number. It will be prudent for me to take down your statement first then I will give you an extract or a police form so you take it to the hospital for treatment because I can see you have been brutally assaulted by some group of people.

Hmmmm, actually it is one person who did this to me.

Officer

Is the person mad? Does the person see you as a punching bag or did you go stealing or flirting around with the person’s partner?

Agnes Kyerewaa

None of the above officer.

Officer

Well even if you did any of the things I mentioned, under no circumstances must the person put the law in his or her hands to damage your face like that. Even Bastie Samir didn’t do this to Bukom Banku on the day they fought each other. I will take your statement then direct you to the DOVSU unit of the police station where a colleague of mine trained specially for this kind of crime will take over and tell you what to do.

As the statement of Agnes Kyerewaa was been taken the commander walks in and engages the officer at the counter in a conversation.

(stands in attention form) Under you sir!!! Good morning and welcome sir.

Commander

Good morning Constable. How are you and hope everything is under control?

Officer

Yes, please.

Commander

Nice one, tell the station master to see me right away when you are done with the complainer in front of you. (takes some to his office)

Agnes Kyerewaa

Uncle good morning so didn’t you see me standing here?

Commander

(turns back to see who was talking) Excuse me who are you because I don’t know you but your voice sounds like my niece.

Agnes Kyerewaa

Uncle this Kyerewaa Agnes your niece.

Commander

Don’t be silly, how can my pretty niece look like a monster like you? My friend, stop this nonsense before I make my boy lock you up for character impersonation.

The three people moved to the commander’s office and the statement of Agnes Kyerewaa is taken as she narrates her ordeal and whatever happened to her to the very end.

Herh, so this stupid boy had the audacity, tenacity and capacity to lay his filthy hands on you after taking you for a ride huh. Doesn’t he know the family you are coming from or does he think you don’t have a family which will stand to fight for you? Constable, get me the Swat Unit Commander right now because we are going for an emergency arrest operation. I will squeeze the life out of this idiot who had the nerves to lay a finger on you.

Adjoa Bernice if he doesn’t want to listen to me or you, let him be and I hope what am feeling is just one of those unnecessary things I waste my time and mind on.

Ah, who is knocking on the door like he or she is deaf? Bernice, check on the person at the door.

Bernice Ansah

(moves to the door to check who was behind the door) Hello sir, please who are you looking for?

Is your father or mother in?

Bernice Ansah

My father is not in but my mum is the one currently at home.

Akua Yankey

(screaming from behind) Bernice who is there and what does he or she want?

Bernice Ansah

Mummy, it’s a man and he’s asking of papa or you.

Akua Yankey

Then, why are you keeping him there without ushering him in? Let him come in so I find out his reason for coming over to this place.

Bernice Ansah

I am Detective Sergeant Kwaku-Duah and as you see me so am here to arrest your son Michael Ansah. Kindly tell me where he is or everyone in here will be charged with “obstruction of duty charges”.

(trembling) Sir please he is the one standing there.

You are under arrest and you have the right to be silent or anything that you say will be used against you in the court of law, also you have the right to an attorney. (brings out a handcuff from his back pocket)

I’m not resisting arrest so there will be no need for the handcuff.

Are you the one to teach me how to do my job? Do you know how many people who had a similar problem like yours that I have professionally dealt with the matter?

Please what has my brother done that you are trying to handcuff him even though he is not resisting arrest?

Herh Bernice, get me my phone so I call your father to inform him of what has just happened here since he is the man of the house.

Eeiiiii mummy, I didn’t know sister Agnes will go this far to get all these police officers here in just a twinkle of an eye. I am even shocked at her action, she should at least consider you and papa before taking such a decision. I won’t forgive her if anything happens to my only brother oooo!!!

(walks in and hands her mother’s phone to her) So mummy, they are taking him to the police station for real? If I was having my phone on me like I would have called the commander to assist us on this issue.

No need for that my dear because the person your brother assaulted happens to be the niece of the commander so my boss is really annoyed and very interested in this case. See you later at the station, guys let’s move out.

Akua Yankey

My God, what is happening now, your father’s phone is not connecting, the call continues to drop without being told if the phone is off or out of coverage area. My enemies are at work.

Meanwhile, almost everyone in the compound has come out to witness what the police came to do in the house. The police cars leave the house and almost everyone goes back to his or her room. At the corner of the house, some tenants are engaging in a conversation

But Agnes didn’t try at all ooo, she should at least considered her decision from going to the police station. This matter could have been resolved peacefully in this house with every medical bill been taken care of by the landlord and his family.

Eno Bruwa

Oh, did you say she didn’t try? Hajia am very disappointed in you, see how that foolish boy has spoilt that pretty girl’s face, if I were the victim or related to the girl like how I will stretch this matter erh, the supreme court would have been where we will end up. But all the same, it will serve as a lesson to him, next time he will not treat any lady like a punching bag again.

(feeling ashamed and wondering if Akua Yankey heard all that came out from her mouth) Oh hmmm my dear, I am very sad with the way things have turn out to be. At least this girl should have considered you and how generous your family is to we the tenants. If she comes back home, I will sit her down and advise her to go and withdraw her charges against your son. Am very worried and I pray this matter doesn’t go overboard or what do you think Hajia?

Thank you very much Hajia, for sympathizing with me and my family but for you Eno Bruwa, I don’t know what to say to you. (takes leave from the place)

(murmuring to herself) Hmmm did I say anything wrong? Me I don’t condone certain foolish things so if she heard it or not, me I spoke my mind and I hope she will not inform her husband as to the things she heard from my mouth. This my big mouth will one day land me in serious trouble paa oooo.

AT THE POLICE STATION

Commander

Is that the dimwit that turned my niece into a punching bag?

Station Master

Yes sir, I have ordered one of the CID’s on duty to take his statement right away.

Commander

I know you are trying to act professional and follow the procedures that we put suspects through but with this fool sitting there I want to deal with him in a very special way so lock him in the cell first, I have a brief meeting with the regional commander and when am back we will know what to do with him so that he will never raise a finger at any woman ever again in his miserable life. When you go and smoke your stupid herbs then you channel your attention to innocent people whiles you could use that strength to do something meaningful to your life.

Michael Ansah

Excuse me, sir, with all due respect you can’t call me names and I want to make things clear to you or any of your officers that I don’t smoke either do I drink. What you are planning to do is against my human right, even for your men to allow me to make a single call to my attorney or any family member who can come and bail me, they have bluntly refused. I hope you can answer questions about how bad you and your men treated me when this matter gets to the media.

Commander

Oh I see!!! So you know what human rights stand for and you took the law into your hands to assault that innocent young lady. Well unfortunately for you that girl is my niece and I won’t sit for any stupid idiot to manhandle her and go about freely. I will also deal with you in a way that you will not forget in a hurry, I hate women beaters and today you will drop that attitude of beating women. Inspector Kafui, see to it that he is put behind bars and let the cell commandos deal with him inside there, I will be back shortly after the meeting, take charge of the station and handle everything that comes here.

 

Michael Ansah is locked inside the cell and immediately the cell commandos descend on him with slaps from all angles, he tries to fight back but he is outnumbered and the punches that he received made him start to cry. Fortunately for him, the cell leader instructed the cell commandos to stop beating him and tell them what brought him to his part of the world. After his introduction and telling him his offence the cell leader realises that Michael Ansah was his classmate back at the primary school so he ordered everyone not to touch him again or even yell at him again inside the cell, he was immediately moved to the VVIP part of the cell so he could feel comfortable. In no time Akua Yankey and Bernice Ansah arrived at the police station crying on top of their voices as if Kwaku Mike has been jailed by court order.

 

Episode 23

Cell Leader

Madam, please stop what you are doing because we the ones inside this place can cry even more than you are doing. The important thing here is for you to get your ward food and also tackle the problem which got him here. If crying brings people out from police cell like some of us will be walking about freely months ago but as it stands, our freedom has been taken away from us by our fellow man.

Bernice Ansah

Mummy what he is saying is very true, let’s try and get in touch with the commander and see how we can resolve this issue amicably. Please officer is the commander in his office?

Officer

I’m sorry the commander is out on official duty and he will be back very soon so you can wait if you don’t mind. Just take a seat in front of the charge office.

Akua Yankey

We don’t mind at all so we will wait for him to arrive. Kwaku Mike, you see what your stupid temper has caused you now? Bernice,

 take this money and go out there and find something to buy for your brother.

Bernice Ansah

Okay, mummy but please in my absence try and see if you can get in touch with papa to see if he can do anything to resolve this issue.

Akua Yankey

I will do that, hurry up and get the food and water for your brother I believe he is starving and he might be distressed by now.

Bernice Ansah leaves the police station to get her brother some things and shortly the commander walks in.

Sergeant Amo, did anyone come looking for me?

Officer

Not really, sir it is only the guy who molested your niece mother and sister who came to see you.

Commander

Don’t mind them, I don’t have their time yet. That stupid guy has to suffer a bit before I and my family members come to a compromise.

Akua Yankey realising the commander was the man who walked past her a while ago tries to approach him but the commander ignored her and walked into his office without listening to what she had to say. She walked to her seat very confused and in no time Bernice Ansah returns with the food and water she went to buy for her brother, seeing that her mother’s mood had changed she tried to find out what the problem was and before her mother could utter a word her phone rang and looking at the screen it was an unknown number so she answered the call.

Hello good day, please may I know who is on the line.

Caller

Akua, is everything alright with you because your voice is not sounding pleasing to me at all?

Akua Yankey

Please, may I know who is on the line because I don’t know this number.

Caller

Ah, so can’t you recognise my voice any longer, well is me your husband.

Akua Yankey

Thank God you called but what happened to your phone because I have been calling and it’s not connecting?

Oh, that is true, my phone fell in a gutter so am now requesting a phone repairer to cut my sim card into a smaller size so I can put it in the phone I seized from Bernice but what is wrong with you because your voice is not sounding right?

Akua Yankey

Hmmm, there is serious trouble ooo!!! The unexpected has happened my love, they have come for him and are not willing to listen to anyone as at now.

My dear, take your time and explain things to me in plain language. Who has come for who and is not willing to listen to anyone?

Akua Yankey

Agnes went to report the incident that took place earlier on this morning to the police and they came for him as if he was a wanted notorious criminal. I came to the police station to sign for his bail but no one is willing to talk to me.

Caller

I told you point blank before leaving the house that I won’t involve myself in any legal action that young lady takes because your son acted foolishly and the law has caught up with him. He should have known that the laws of this country protect women and that it is absurd for a man to lay his fingers on a woman. Have you gone to see the commander of the police station?

Akua Yankey

I know very well Kofi but please help him out, you can’t turn your back on your only son and I also believe he has learnt his lesson in a very hard way. For the commander, I tried talking to him but he ignored me and my little information I have gathered means that, Agnes is related to him. I mean to say that Agnes is the niece of the commander so the man is really serious and has taken the matter personally.

Oh really? Then your son is in a deep mess, where is Agnes at the moment and what about the commander also?

Akua Yankey

I believe Agnes has left to the hospital but for the commander, he is in his office. Please do something for my son to come out because my heart is beating fast and if anything bad happens to my son I will kill myself. I want you to do something now and I mean now!!!!

Caller

Woman, shut up, you talk too much sometimes. Did I ask him to go and beat the lady mercilessly in her room? Hmmmm, I will call you back (call drops).

So my guy what brought you here and how long have you been here?

Cell Leader

My brother, I have been here for almost 9months but initially, I was taken to Nsawam Prison where I spent 4years without trial before my lawyer tried his best for me to be brought here. My offence was that I was at the right place at the wrong time, I went to visit my girlfriend who I was planning to marry to apologise to her on some misunderstandings we had the previous day and out of anger, I told her she will see the bad side of me. I entered her room to see her lying down almost lifeless with a knife stabbed in her stomach, I rushed to get the knife out from her stomach and that was when her roommate walked in, she screamed to alert her other hostel mates to come and see the crime I had committed, I tried to defend myself but none of them had the ear to listen to me. They called the police in and that is how I ended up here without even a proper trial, I was only sent to court once and I was remanded to police custody but the detective handling my case decided to send me to the Nsawam Prison because I failed to give him the money he wanted from me. I have virtually lost everything and my hope now is lost because I don’t know my fate any longer but am ready to embrace anything that comes because my girlfriend was the only important thing to me on this earth as I lost my parents and siblings in a fatal accident.

Wooow, your story is very pathetic but what are the police officers doing about it?

Hahaha, as if they care about me, see now in our country Ghana no one thinks about anyone again ooo,  if you don’t have money, you never get the justice we have on our coat of arms, for the freedom you are given about 40% of it but if you make a mistake and its taken away from you that is when you will realise that justice is sold at a very high price. I don’t have any family member alive who will stand to fight for me so am just looking up to the Lord as I know that the battle is the Lord’s.

Hmmmmm, what a country that we live in, no one cares about his fellow being and selfishness is now the order of the day. I hope and pray that a divine intervention comes your way, as you have probably learnt a lot from this case.

My brother, does someone has to tell me or blow me? I have learnt my lessons in a very hard way that when am angry I should learn how to control my tongue and temper because the bible says the fool is considered wise when he learns how to hold his tongue.

Bro, I have also learnt my side of the lesson in a very unique way and I hope I come out clean from this mess very soon without being processed to court because my dad who can play around the clock to get me out from here emphasised categorically that he won’t involve himself in this matter should the lady decide to make any legal move.

Really? Can he be that callous and irresponsible like that? Ain’t you his only son?

Yes am his only son but my dad has got an unresolved issue with me which has turned us in arc rivals all because I diverted my course I read in the university without informing him of that and he only got to know after I completed school.

Cell Leader

Ah, so what is coming from your mouth does it sound pleasing to your ears? You guffed big time and if I were him(your father) I will even throw you out of my house if you are still living under my roof. I am trying to imagine how his face was going to look as he got this bad news from you, my brother you put yourself in your dad’s shoes and imagine how you were going to feel if it was you. You didn’t try at all but let’s all pray for divine intervention on your behalf because if not then you will pay a courtesy visa-free trip to “country no vex” very soon.

Hahahaha, that country is in Africa, I mean to say in West Africa and precisely Ghana and the exact location is in the eastern region in a small town called Nsawam and an estate called Nsawam Medium Prison.

God forbid, my guy!!! I won’t ever in my life visit that place filled with hoodlums, rapists, armed robbers, fraudsters, harden criminals and social miscreants.

Mike let me enlighten you on this, is not all the people who are there are criminals as most of us think. Some are there because they were in the right place at the wrong time and couldn’t defend themselves properly. Even some were wrongly accused because they chose to toll the right part of their lives. For instance, lets use my issue as a case study.

At the Commander’s Office:

(talking to himself) Nonsense you think you can molest my niece and go about freely? I will make ruin and mess up your miserable life for you.

Hello commander, how are you doing?

Commander

I’m fine, may I please know who is on the line because am very busy this afternoon and I have a lot of things to attend to.

Caller

Does it mean you don’t recognise my voice any longer and why are you been hostile this afternoon like that?

Commander

My friend, I told you am very busy so introduce yourself and state your purpose of calling because this is an office line and you don’t expect me to recognise all the voices that I come across daily.

Caller

I’m shocked you claim you don’t recognise this voice after all this while. So it’s true that you have gotten a new lady so you have forgotten all about me if not like you wouldn’t be acting this way towards me.

Commander

Rubbish!!! If you don’t have anything reasonable to say to me then clear off this line because I have important matters to attend to. Mtcheeeeeeew (drops the telephone)

Nonsense, you call someone and you go about saying foolish things to the person without even introducing yourself properly to the person. This is how you go about putting people into serious troubles. (telephone rings again).

I am Akoto Adjei Alexander, a Christian. A product of Abetifi Presbyterian Senior High School, Abetifi-Kwahu. I am in my late 20’s and the last born of the boys my parent brought to earth. I am a fiction/scriptwriter who loves to write about nature and the realities of life.
