UNTIL YOU
EPISODE 2
There was no one within the compound when Naa arrived, so she walked straight to Korkor’s door. She tapped on it gently and was dampened in spirit when no response came. She waited a while longer at the door and sadly decided to just head back home and find something to do to while away the time.
Unconsciously, she turned the handle as if to convince herself that Korkor was really out, and breathed with relief when the door opened. Naa knew there was no way Korkor would go to town without locking up.
It was a single room self-contained apartment with a living area. There was a movie being shown on the flatscreen television, and the centre table in the living room had leftover food in two plates.
Â
Two glasses were quarter filled with what looked like wine. Naa made to walk out since it looked like she was intruding on her course mate’s privacy, but then she heard giggles from the bedroom as if someone was being tickled, and then she heard a male’s voice that sounded awfully familiar.
“Your navel is your weak spot,” the familiar male voice said as Korkor giggled, and moaned softly in a sexually-aroused monotone.
“No, I wouldn’t say that. I completely go insane when you kiss me down there,” Korkor replied in between more lustful giggles.
Â
Naa Shika, completely convinced that she was not welcome, turned to leave the room, and that was when her eyes caught sight of the clothes hanging on one of the armrests of the sofa in the far end of the living area.
She knew they were the same ones Nii had left her house in.
Her confused eyes fell on the sneakers close to the centre table and her curiosity peaked.
Without a second thought, she pushed the bedroom door open and the sight that met her eyes was shocking and devastating.
Two adults, both naked, were in the bedroom, a man and a woman!
The man was kneeling in front of the bed with his head buried between the thighs of Korkor.
Â
The most shocking thing of all was that the man was the same person Naa loved so much with every single beat of her heart!
Nii looked up when the door opened rudely and froze when he saw Naa’s devastated face.
Naa felt the blood draining from her brain and her vision blurred!
Her legs weakened and she saw the room spinning!
Her legs finally buckled and she collapsed on the floor with a loud thud.
Nii moved with the speed of lightning as he pulled up his shorts in frenzy and rushed to Naa’s inert form.
He checked her pulse and sighed with relief when he felt one. Then he started shouting out her name and talking at the same time.
Â
“Call someone! Do something! Don’t just stand there?” he shouted as he shook Naa who was still unresponsive. “Don’t just stand there, damn it! Call a doctor or something!”
Nii ranted at Korkor who was now standing in the bedroom doorway still naked looking on as if watching a movie.
“Hey, chill, will you? It’s not like she’s dead even though I care less if she does!”
“How can you stand there and say something as gross as that? You know I love her,” Nii responded with confusion and looked around for his T-shirt.
Â
He knew he had to do something but was unsure exactly what. It suddenly dawned on him that there was always a nurse in his house for his grandma. Without another word, he scooped Naa Shika up and ran with her on the street as if his life depended on it.
He crashed through the main gate of their house, alarming the security guard as he shouted instructions to get the nurse to his room.
The Lamptey compound had three identical storey buildings on three plots of land that had been merged into one. Roofed swimming pools with open bars and a rest area separated each storey from the other. The landscape was expertly designed with green grasses and exotic flowers. On the far right was a long glass building for parking cars.
Â
Still alarmed, Nii did not break stride as he headed for the last building to his left which was his paradise. A security guard ran ahead and opened the door to Nii’s apartment and he rushed through to the bedroom.
Nii put Naa gently on his huge bed and breathed with relief when he saw that her beautiful eyes were staring at him now even though they had become brighter by the tears she was trying hard to fight back.
“Are you okay, Naa? Do you see me? Can you hear me?”
The nurse came into the bedroom just then. Nii briefed her about what happened, but he left out the reason why Nah collapsed.
The nurse asked him to step aside as she checked her out.
Â
Nurse Miriam carried out a thorough physical check and asked Naa a lot of questions. When she was satisfied with the answers she received, she cleared Naa with good news.
“There doesn’t seem to be anything amiss. There’s just a small lump where your head hit the ground. Thankfully, your thick hair cushioned the impact. You will be fine. I’ll get you some painkillers but if you feel or see anything unusual like blood traces in your eyeballs or tingling in any part of your body, do seek medical care immediately.”
Naa said her thanks to the kind nurse as tears trickled down the sides of her eyes and the nurse knew from the sound of Naa’s voice that her pain was more emotional than physical.
When it became obvious that neither Nii nor Naa was ready to fill her in on what went down, she left to her duties.
Â
There was a pregnant silence for a while as Naa cried her eyes out silently. Nii tried to comfort her but she was too disillusioned to let him.
After a long while, Naa got off the huge bed and looked around for her items but realized she could have left them in Korkor’s house when she fainted.
She was contemplating how to get her items back when the door crashed open and a fuming Korkor, dressed in a very short skirt and a top that stopped just after her bust, entered and threw items she had bundled up in frenzy from her room onto the thick carpet on the floor and stormed out without a word.
Naa had expected Nii to go after Korkor but he still sat transfixed on the edge of the bed with a shattered look on his face.
Â
Naa tried to pick up her personal effects but Nii rushed to where she stood and held both of her hands in his.
“I know there’s nothing I can say to justify my actions. I’m a jerk and you have every reason to be mad at me. I’ve disappointed you in the worst way ever, and I would understand if you decide to pull the plugs on our relationship. I would, however, plead with you to temper justice with mercy. I don’t even think I’ll be justified to ask for forgiveness. I’m truly sorry, Naa.”
For a moment, Naa Shika was touched by his words and felt tears wetting her eyeballs. She felt like throwing her hands around him and telling him she had forgiven him but then she remembered how she found him, with his head buried inside the very depths of someone she – until now – considered a friend.
Â
Naa took a step back from him and bent to pick up her items. Nii stopped her, pulled her up and hurriedly bent to pick her items. Naa headed for the door which still stood ajar after Korkor’s rude entry and exit.
“Naa, wait!” he said and rushed after her.
He caught up with her just a few meters from his bedroom door. She stared uninterestingly at him and after a spell, he fumbled out his words carefully.
“Let me drop you off, at least. I don’t think you should be walking after what happened.”
Still quite shaken and traumatized, she stared at him without uttering a letter, then she motioned for him to lead the way.
