UNTIL YOU
EPISODE 9
The rest of the week went by in a blur with a series of intensive lectures and demanding deadlines for assignment submissions.
Apart from a few pitfalls, it went well though. Naa intentionally gave one excuse after another when Nii wanted to hang out with her.
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became that they were just sex mates and nothing more, at least from the moment when her heart began to rebel.
Most of their time together had been under the sheets and slowly that was beginning to annoy her, especially when she considered the fact that despite the frequency of their sexual intimacy, he cheated with other women. She had found that unacceptable at first but had decided to move on with the hope that he would come to love her and commit to the relationship.
It had not happened that way, though.
His cheating had gradually assumed grandiose proportions, and now the ice in her heart had become a fertile land for the cast iron bars to firm up and expand.
Yes, she believed in true love but as the years went by she became more convinced that whatever was between them was not true love, and was not growing into one. Maybe she chould have summoned the courage to walk away, but leaving for the unknown had also not been too appealing, so she stayed and hoped.
Hoped and hoped and prayed… all to no avail.
Realistically, she should have called it off when in their second year Nii had fought another guy, blow-for-blow, over another lady. The reason for that action was not really clear but he had convinced her it was self-defence. He had almost lost his left eye in that fight when the other guy who was the lady’s boyfriend at the time tried to pull his eyes out with a knife but missed a few inches and ended up opening a cut right under his eyeballs.
That experience had been humiliating and totally shocking, to say the least.
Sometimes, she had questioned why she had stayed through all his indiscretions and always given him the benefit of the doubt even when the evidence had been overwhelming, though non-conclusive until she had seen him with Korkor.
And yet she still stayed, through the abysmal pain, the tears, the loneliness, and the crushing weight of constant heartbreak.
Well, enough was enough.
Love was sweet, so they said, but for her sweetness had been the exception so far, and pain had been the norm. That was madness, and unacceptable!
If that was love, she did not want to have anything more to do with it, despite still being with him and going on and on without much care in their sexual escapades. Granted, the sex between them was good – or so she thought since she had not been with any other.
Was that all there was to love? Sex, sex, and sex?
What happened when that physical aspect was taken away? Surely, there were people in sexless relationships who were probably experiencing genuine happiness.
The spark was gone from her relationship now, and slowly the sexual trysts were beginning to get in her emotional plate of displeasure. They were walking on a precipice with thin ice beneath their feet, and she knew that sooner rather than later, that relationship would plunge into the abyss, or fall into the crippling cold beneath the fragile ice.
She woke up late that day. She sent her clothes downstairs to be laundered, and then she cooked.
Naa did not eat much though since Allan had called to alert her not to over-indulge in food because he was taking her to the best place in town to eat.
An hour to her pick-up time, a big box arrived at her doorstep by special delivery and Naa received a red dress, matching shoes, and a clutch with a simple message:
For my lady of the night!
Allan
If this had happened some weeks previously, Naa would have been blown away by the gesture but she knew better now. Most men would go to extreme lengths to get a lady’s attention in pursuit of just one thing: sex.
She spread the items on her bed and stared at them for a while deciding whether or not to put them on. Some women would have found the gesture romantic but she only saw a man who wanted to warm his way into her closed heart and that did not sit well with her.
In order not to disappoint Allan, she wore the dress and shoes and was amazed at how the dress enhanced her beautiful figure.
At exactly six o’clock, a beautiful Range Rover Evoque pulled up at the gate to her parents’ mansion and a smartly-dressed Allan stepped out with his phone in hand.
He looked like one of those celebrities in a dark-wine tuxedo, white shirt, and a dark-wine bow tie ready for the red carpet at one of the famous award ceremonies.
Thirty minutes later, Naa and Allan, looking splendid in their outfits, set off to the destination only Allan knew.
Allan turned out to be more fun than she had imagined but her antennas were up and there was no way she would let him into her heart no matter how nice he treated her.
He made her feel like she was the only woman in the world and looked really proud as they were ushered into the plush restaurant by a smartly-uniformed attendant.
The evening was going well until her phone vibrated. Luckily, Allan had gotten up to get her a different brand of water so she quickly checked. It was Nii, and he was frantic.
He had forwarded a picture to her which he had received from a friend in the restaurant she was dining with Allan. Nii was greatly agitated and was repeatedly asking for her location and what she was doing out with a guy.
The picture was beautiful though. It had been taken when she had entered the restaurant on Allan’s arm and they both had the most beautiful of smiles on their faces.
“I can’t talk right now, Nii. Will call you when I get home, if it’s not too late,” she replied and turned the phone to flight mode. Somehow, she enjoyed making him worried and jealous.
That was a change, a big change! Nii had always taken her for granted and toyed with the strings of her heart, always confident that no matter the indiscretion Naa would always give him that second chance.
She had never given Nii any chance to doubt her, or feel insecure. Naa had been resolute in her commitment, believing strongly in the sanctity of their relationship and had never been prepared to let in a third party.
But to Nii, everything had been a game.
And now, suddenly, he was seeing Naa in a different kind of light, and the agony was obviously both unexpected and severe.
She looked around sharply to see if she could identify anyone who had nothing better doing than sending pictures of them to Nii and was not surprised to see Lily and a group of ladies and older men around a table at the far end of the restaurant.
Lily and Naa had never seen eye to eye from the first day they met. She lived with an uncle in the neighbourhood and had made it clear she did not like Naa.
Naa knew that the hatred Lily felt for her had something to do with Nii but had never received a confirmation from him. Naa decided to ignore her and if possible, give her a reason to take more pictures.
And so, for the rest of the evening, she flirted with Allan as much as possible in a bid to make a statement to Lily that she did not care about her presence and the fact that she was sending pictures to Nii.
Dinner went very well and by the time Allan dropped her off at her gate, she admitted she had not had that much fun in a long while.
Allan got down immediately the car stopped and was at her side of the car in no time. He opened the door and gestured humorously for her to step out.
He closed the door gently and thanked Naa for keeping a lonely man company and bringing hope to his life.
Then, he hugged her briefly and pecked her on both cheeks and lips, just to re-echo the fact that his interest in her was a romantic one.
He watched as Naa entered the house and waited until she had climbed the stairs to her wing and blew her a kiss.
Naa blew a kiss back and opened the door to her wing aware that Nii would be waiting inside for her.
She kicked the shoes off her feet and tried to put on the light in her corridor when it suddenly came on.
Feigning surprise, she acted as if she was scared.
“You almost gave me a heart attack, Nii.”
“And what the hell was that all about, Naa? Who was that guy and why was he kissing you?” he exploded, his face veined with the acute agitation and fury he was going through.
“Don’t exaggerate, Nii. He didn’t kiss me. What do you take me for?”
“I don’t know! You’ve changed so bloody much that I barely know you anymore! Why did you go out with him? And why was he all over you like that, Naa? Why? Tell me the fuck why!”
“Since when did going out with a guy for dinner become a crime, Nii?” she asked calmly.
“When you are my woman, it is a crime! And from what I saw, he’s not just a friend so cut out the crap!”
“Really? I can’t have friends because I’m your woman but you can have many friends and even lick the clits of other women, right?”
“Is that what this is about? Are you trying to get even because I did something bad? I did accept my wrong and apologized for it, Naa! And since then I’ve been focused and committed, haven’t I?”
“I’m really not in the mood for this. It’s been a long day, Nii. I just want to shower and sleep,” Naa said as she peeled off the dress from her body revealing her matching underwear.
Nii fought to keep his anger in check as he followed Naa to the bedroom.
And for the rest of the night, the two argued back and forth until Naa Shika fell asleep, still angry.
And for the first time in the four years that they had been together, they had gone to bed in the same room without making love after an argument.
Poignantly, Naa had not capitulated and given in as she usually did just to bring peace between them! She had held her ground!
It was still exhilarating, in a way, but slowly becoming a bit scary too!
It seemed to her that the ice and iron fiddling with her heart had become bolder… and stronger!
