Topic: Hindrances To Our Inheritance
As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up to Him and fell on his knees before Him. “Good Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Mark 10:17 (NIV)
Sober Reflections
We saw a few scriptures about our inheritance by virtue of our relationship with Jesus. Eph 1:11a also tells us that, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God.
However, certain things can hinder us from receiving our inheritance.
A young man went to see Jesus asking Him what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus referred him to the commandments.
He said he had obeyed them from his youth. Clearly, this was someone who wanted to receive eternal life. And even though he had been obeying the commandments, he still felt there was something more. That was why he went to see Jesus.
Jesus saw that one thing was standing in his way to his heavenly inheritance. His possessions. He told him to:
~ sell all his possessions
~ give the money to the poor
~ come and follow Him
At this, the man went away sad because he had great possessions.
Material wealth is one of the hindrances to our eternal inheritance. When one’s heart is in his possessions, he can not enter the Kingdom of God.
Sisters, until we come to the point where our material possessions do not take the place of God in our hearts we can not enter the Kingdom of God. Remember Lot’s wife? Gen 19:26
King David was wealthy but his wealth did not take God’s place in his heart.
Prayer
Thank You Father God for giving me what I need that will not be a hindrance to my inheritance in glory.
Holy Spirit, please help me not to put anything before God in our hearts that we shall receive our eternal inheritance in Christ to the glory of God, in Jesus’ Name. Amen!
