EPISODE 19
It was Maya’s fifth day in Sekondi.
Prince indicated to Maya he would like to take a look at her Uncle’s condition since he was a neurosurgeon.
He was very positive something could be done to help him walk again.
Maya did not have any problem with helping her Uncle especially when she saw the state he was in.
Prince made it a habit to take Maya’s Uncle for a morning walk in his wheelchair every morning and the two bonded perfectly.
To Uncle Fii, Prince was like the son he never had.
Maya and Prince decided to co-fund Uncle Fii’s treatment.
They also decided to cater for his children who were forced by circumstances to move to people’s houses as house helps.
The family was reunited and Maya was glad to know she had cousins she could relate to.
Maya and Prince were relaxing under the mango tree on the compound after the usual morning walk when Maame Serwaa walked to them.
Uncle Fii was also enjoying the morning sun with them.
He looked better than Maya had found him.
Maya brought in a barber to trim his bushy hair, and this added some colour to his face.
Maame Serwaa knelt before Maya and held her legs.
“Maya dear, please find a place in your heart to forgive me for causing you so much pain when in fact you had done nothing wrong to me. I have really paid for my sins towards you. Shortly after you left, I found out I was pregnant too but that baby, the only boy I carried, turned out still born. After carrying him for nine solid months we just lost him. I know God is not like us but I’m sure I paid for the treatment I gave you. I have been a bitter person all these years.
Indeed, I resented the fact that my man was at your mother’s beck and call. He loved your mother like his own mother. I kind of envied that relationship they shared and tried my best to get them to hate each other. I schemed, told lies and did the unthinkable just to make your mom unhappy and get Fii to break free from her. But I never won.
Your mom was just too good for anything bad to happen to her. It was as if there was an invisible being watching over her. Your mom lost two pregnancies and they were all orchestrated by me. I got this medicine from the local herbalist and laced her food with it any time she took seed. It was so obvious to tell because she would start feeling sick almost immediately. I beg you in the name of God to have mercy on me. I have wronged you and your family. Please forgive me.”
Uncle Fii could not hide his disgust and disappointment.
“That woman you hated so much raised me. She was just a young woman but she did a good job. She sacrificed a whole lot for me and you knew it. We don’t share the same mother but she never gave up on me. They fed me, clothed me and educated me with the little money they had then. I didn’t know anything about the gold or the properties they acquired for Maya. That woman was my everything. She was my mother, sister, friend and all. May God forgive you for your sins. What you did was truly despicable. You could have killed her with that concoction.“
“I’m on my knees Fii, begging for forgiveness for my sins. Pleeeeease. I was overcome with jealousy and I coveted Maya’s inheritance. I tried to open the briefcase but it never budged. Please forgive me.”
Prince and Maya were dumbfounded.
Her mother had told her right before she died that the digital padlock to the briefcase will only open with her thump print .
Maya was just sad about losing her siblings because of someone’s manipulation. But there was nothing she could do to undo the past.
She would not end up like Maame Serwaa.
She was not going to let her anger, pain and frustrations consume and define her.
Yes, she had survived.
That was the most important thing and she would not allow anybody to sit on her happiness.
She was going to marry her ‘handsome Prince’ and live happily ever after.
She took Prince to her parents’ grave that day and decided to go to her hometown before they got married.
Maya was sure her grandparents, if they were still alive, would be worried sick about her Mom and Dad and felt it was time to give them closure.
Prince’s main aim now was to do his best for her uncle and see if he could accompany them to the village since he was the only witness.
They made arrangements for her Uncle to be airlifted to the hospital Prince worked at in Accra.
Maya was glad she came back.
She felt renewed and rejuvenated.
It was as if a heavy burden had been lifted off her shoulders.
Prince and Maya took her cousins out for a good time later that afternoon and left for Accra.
The drive to Accra was fun as usual as they took turns behind the wheel and Prince was at his jovial best.
It was the most memorable trip of her life except for the rather shocking revelations from Maame Serwaa.
They spent the night at the plush Windy Lodge Hotel situated right at the beach in Winneba and continued their journey the next morning.
Maya had missed Prince Junior and little Maya so much.
That was the first time she had gone anywhere without her son.
Her uncle had been very thrilled to learn she had a boy.
Prince dropped Maya at her home and promised to pick their children from his parents later in the day and go for a family outing if Maya was up to it.
Prince drove to his gated compound to find the place locked from the inside.
That baffled him a lot because he was sure he locked the gate from the outside when he left.
He reasoned that maybe his mom used his place instead of her home with the spare key he left them for any emergencies.
Prince pressed the doorbell and waited.
After an eternity, a lady in hot pants emerged from the house with a broad smile on her face.
Prince could not make her out immediately but there was something awfully familiar about her.
He was so confused he double-checked his house number to make sure he had not stopped at his neighbour’s gate.
The lady got to the gate still smiling whiles she rattled the keys to open the gates.
Prince was dumbfounded.
He was staring at Mabel.
He was still looking at her deciding whether he was dreaming or this was reality.
“Hey loverboy, aren’t you coming inside? Have you lost your manners as well? Is that how you greet your wife?”
Prince was suddenly furious.
He was sure his mom had played him.
Why had Mabel showed up at this time of his life when he was making arrangements to marry the love of his life?
And did she just say ‘his wife’?
Prince drove in without saying a word.
He got down to close the gates since Mabel had abandoned them by the time he was parked.
She was patiently waiting for him when he stepped down.
He walked past her and went to the gate.
Mabel was standing with outreached arms when Prince got back to her.
“What is the meaning of this? How did you get into my house?”
“Need you ask that question? Your mom gladly gave me your spare keys. After all, am I not your wife?”
“My wife? What are you on Mabel? You stand there after all that you’ve done to call yourself my wife? The last time I checked my marriage was ruled out in court and my ex-wife ran off with her ex-boyfriend, a guy she cheated on me with for years when we were still married. I don’t know what you are doing, but get your things and get out of my house. I handed over the keys to your house, the one you got from the divorce to your lawyer as requested. You have no business invading my privacy like this.”
“Well the last time I checked you never received the divorce certificate because I conveniently forgot to sign my portion of the divorce documents. So whether you like it or not, we are still married so put down your holy act and let’s have some fun. Look at the way you are so uptight even though you had just spent six days with the supposed love of your life. You are that way because you’ve been denied sex. Let me give you good sex on a silver platter. No strings attached.”
Mabel said and threw her hands around Prince.
“Take your filthy hands off me this minute, Mabel. If you want to kid yourself that we are still married, that’s your problem. If it’s true you did not sign the papers I will take you up on it. Where have you been all these years, huh? Having fun whiles your daughter grew up without a memory of you. I will fight you to the teeth in court if that’s what you want. Don’t think you can waltz in here with your body to fool me. For the sake of the daughter we share between us, don’t push me or this will be one big mess you cannot wipe off. You better go and sign the damn document and get lost or we shall meet in court for contempt.”
“Contempt? Since when did you become a lawyer. Contempt for what?”
“For disrespecting the court. Were you not the one who asked for the divorce? Even after your affairs, I was civil to you. I knew about them all. The text messages, the lies, the secret calls and the rendezvous in my house while I was working! I knew about them all. Somehow, I blamed myself for your actions. I never truly loved you as much as I thought. But I gave it my best shot. If you know what’s good for you, you will find your lawyer and sign those documents right this minute. I have all the evidence against you and if I file for divorce with those evidence, no Judge will turn a blind eye. Do the right thing for once, Mabel. We are over and there’s no going back.”
“Evidence, what evidence? You are just bluffing”
“Really, do you really want to wash your dirty linen in public? For starters, you abandoned your matrimonial home for six years. Then I have all the tapes. The calls, the sex scene, everything. I guess you forgot about the hidden cameras in the bungalows. I chanced on them by mistake but was appalled at what I saw. In truth I didn’t complain because it seemed you were happy and that was all I wanted for you. And then there was the part that you and your hothead ex-boyfriend married before you left Ghana. That will pass for bigamy, don’t you think?”
“Why, do you hate me that much? You didn’t even care I was cheating on you? What did you expect me to do when I never got your heart? You were always brooding over Maya. What does she have that I don’t have, huh? Why couldn’t you just love me? You think it was easy living with a man whose heart belonged to another? I tried so hard to make you see me as a woman but no, I wasn’t good enough, was I?”
“Look, there’s no use arguing over this. What’s done, is done. We can’t have it back. I’m giving you five minutes to get your stuff out. I don’t want you here. Go sign those damn documents.”
“You are not even worth it. You are a loser, will always be.”
Mabel walked briskly to the house and brought out her suitcase.
She opened the garage and brought out her car with the remote control.
She got down to pick her bag.
Prince tried to help her with it but she pushed him aside.
“Leave my things alone. Open your damn filthy gate and let me get out of this stinking house. You will miss me. I promise you.”
“All the best Mabel, I really mean that.”
“Screw you!”
She reversed hurriedly and left Prince’s house without a wink or a smile.
She was fuming with anger and humiliation.
Mabel thought Prince was not worth her care.
He was a hothead and she shouldn’t have stooped so low to get his attention.
She was angrier for believing her mother-in-law that Prince loved her. She was supposed to know better.
A man who couldnot feel pain when he found out she was cheating on him was not worth the effort. He was a nutcase and the hard truth was that he never loved her.
But she couldn’t really put all the blame on Prince.
She blamed herself for getting pregnant in the first place.
That marriage was not supposed to happen.
She was still hurting from her breakup with Charles when she found solace in Prince’s arms.
She was done fighting.
Simply put, she was just not lucky with men.
The only man she loved came and went as and when he pleased.
He was never ready to commit even in marriage.
