EPISODE 2
It has been seven days since Kay broke off with her, and Maa Adjoa is still in bed crying. She has lost interest in almost everything around her. She is not even eating right. Her hair is messed up…and her room was so unkempt.
She has been indoors the whole time, only panning to the bathroom and the kitchen when necessary. She does not want to miss Kwamena when he comes back so she has stayed in.
Kwamena has not shown up, nor called and all attempts to reach him have fallen through. When she mustered up enough courage and went to see him, she found him in bed with another woman.
It wasn’t like they were into anything. They had been fully clothed, but she had envied the closeness and her heart almost left her chest that day.
She had arrived at Kwamena’s house around two in the afternoon. She had gone straight to the outhouse where Kwamena and his sister lives and knocked once on his door.
Kwamena had asked her to come in, thinking it was his sister who was coming in to tease him or stay a while, like she had been doing.
And there he had been, on his bed, limbs intertwined with those of a beautiful woman as they laughed over something they were watching on the lady’s phone.
Maa Adwoa’s shock had rendered her immobile and dumb. She had stood frozen for a while and when things finally sank in, she had just turned and left.
Maa Adjoa had cried all the way home.
It was obvious Kwamena had moved on, and the earlier she accepted her loss, the better.
And now she is staring reality in the face!
She has been indoors ever since.
She has called in sick for work all the while and now it looks like she is still in no position to go to work. Maa Adjoa is aware she is stretching her luck with her employers but she knows for a fact that she is going to mess up big time if she reports for work.
She works as a teller in one of the prestigious banks in the country and she needs her full mental faculties to perform her duty without errors. Right now, she is not sure she can write her own name because she feels broken and worthless.
She does not want to do anything, and she does not feel like seeing anyone. She just wants to be alone with her misery.
Later on, she turns on the music player in her room and listens to her favourite tracks without even hearing them.
She is so broken she does not see how she is going to survive.
She picks up her phone from the head of the bed and flips through her messages hopefully, expecting something from Kwamena but there is not even a full stop from him. It is becoming increasingly obvious that she had lost him a long time ago but she had just refused to see the signs.
Looking back, it seems she overlooked a lot of the tell-tale signs that he was growing fonder of someone else. The unexpected cancellations of dates with her, his hurry to leave whenever he was with her, not responding to her messages in time, the demand for space during misunderstandings, the comparisons with other girls and all those little things that had silently surprised her.
She has made up all the excuses for him instead of discerning that the end of their relationship was just a step away.
Maa Adjoa sees a notification from Facebook and decides to take a look.
Kwamena has just updated his cover photo. He is smiling broadly in a picture with the same girl she saw him in bed with.
Maa Adjoa’s sadness peaks. She had not believed, even in her wildest imaginations, that she was that easily replaceable.
She closes her eyes as if that singular action can stop the tears from falling down her cheeks.
And then, just as she is about to go off Facebook when she sees another red notification mark.
She clicks on it absent-mindedly and sees that one of her friends has just tagged her name in a comment on a Facebook Site.
The Site is THE KLEVER MAGG SIZZLING ROMANCE, and her friend has tagged her name in a comment on a post titled WEDDING OF MY EX, which is apparently a story.
She is intrigued by the ‘Ex’ factor and she clicks on the link to the story. The link takes her to the author’s website, the stories section to be precise. She starts to read, and for the next few minutes, her misery is forgotten as she delved into the heartaches and passions of the characters in the story.
A loud knock on her door brings her from the fiction world to the present. She realizes it is quite dark when she looks out her bedroom window. She walks leisurely to the door hoping the person will give up and leave by the time she gets to the door.
Maa Adjoa hears her phone ringing constantly but refuses to go back to the bedroom for it.
The knock comes again and again, this time she hears her best friend call out her name with every bang on her front door.
“I know you’re in there, Adjoa. Open the damn door or I’ll get someone to break it down.”
Adjoa leisurely puts on the outside lights and looks around the hall to see if it is not so messy.
“Who is there?” she pretends in a dull voice.
“Open up this instant,” her best friend, Faustina Adu, shouts!
Maa Adjoa unlocks the door and steps aside for her friend of many years to enter.
Faustina takes one long look at her friend and wonders what might be amiss for her to look like that.
“What’s the meaning of this Adjoa? You’ve got me really worried. You have not answered my calls or text messages. I stopped by your office and found out you’ve not been there for a week or so. What is going on with you, huh? Just look at you! You look a real mess.”
Maa Adjoa looks into her friend’s eyes and fresh tears form in them.
“Kwamena left me, F. He left me for another woman.”
“He did what?”
“You heard me, F. I don’t matter to him anymore. I feel very worthless and alone.”
“Oh, come here, dear. You know you are never alone.”
Faustie pulls Maa Adjoa into her arms as she lets out the pain in her heart.
The two friends take a seat on the long sofa, sitting beside each other.
Faustie is still recovering from the shock of the news she has just heard. She admits she did not see this coming at all.
She had also admired the love her friend and Kwamena shared. They were a perfect couple by what she saw and heard.
She is also aware she can’t ask her broken-hearted friend anything more at this stage. Right now, all she can be for her friend is a shoulder for her to cry on.
She sits with her friend for a long time without saying much.
She then prepares spaghetti with veggies and little chunks of fried meat and forces Maa Adjoa to eat a little.
Faustie then waits as Maa Adjoa takes a bath.
Faustie calls Kwamena several times while Adjoa is in the shower but he does not pick up.
“You know, I was thinking it will not be a good idea for you to be by yourself in moments like this. I think you should come and stay at my place for some time. You don’t have to be alone right now. I don’t want you thinking ever that it’s your fault. These things happen and you need to be brave. I’m sure love will knock at your door soon enough. It’s not the end of the world just yet. I can understand you are hurting right now but don’t do anything rash. Just take it a day at a time and I’m sure being at my place will help in that direction,” Faustie supplies as soon as her friend joins her.
“Naah, I’ll be fine, I guess. It just hurts so much. I feel used and dumped. He never truly loved me, that’s the bottom line and that hurts a lot.”
“I can just imagine your pain. Life is not fair sometimes. You, of all people, don’t deserve to be treated like this. You are the most caring and kindest person I have ever come across. But it is well. I know these words won’t mean a thing to you right now because you are probably feeling lost with no direction and your faith, even in yourself, is shaken. You don’t have to give up, girlfriend, fight to keep your head high. Life is full of mountains. Move every mountain that comes your way. There will be battles, sometimes you’ll win and sometimes you will lose. It’s not about how fast you get there, it’s about getting there. So, keep moving please, push on, take chances, LIVE.”
Maa Adjoa turns to look at her friend with a weak smile on her face. She knows what her friend is saying makes sense but it’s so hard to just let go of the pain in her heart.
Only she can describe that pain that has come to eclipse her heart in just a flash. She knows she has to move on but how is she going to do that when she remembers every kiss, every touch and every moment they have shared together? She sees Kwamena wherever she turns her eyes. He has become a very important part of her life for so long and now she is expected to live as if he never existed. What is she going to tell her family, her colleagues and friends? Who’s going to want her without her V-card? She has always imagined being with only one man, the one who takes her virginity.
“Sweetheart, please come with me. It’s Friday, I’ll only be out a few times this weekend, just come with me. I’m sure a change of environment will do you good,” Faustina, her dependable friend says as if she is reading Adjoa’s thoughts.
“I’ll be fine F, I just need time to process this. Time to tell my heart it’s over, and I’ve to do this alone. I’m not good company right now and I’ll only be in your way if I come with you. We will be in touch, like always.”
Faustie insists Maa Adjoa sees her off to her car. They say their goodbyes and part company for the night.
Maa Adjoa goes back to her phone to continue reading “Wedding of My Ex”. Somehow, she wants to know how the story ends so she keeps reading until it ends somewhere other than the finale.
She starts searching the site for a clue as to how she will get the rest of the story to read.
That is when she sees a number to contact for enquiries.
She checks the time and realizes it is close to midnight but that did not stop her from sending her message.
Surprisingly, a response comes, “The concluding episodes have been uploaded on the site. Follow this link to access it. Thanks.”
She stays up the whole night and reads to the end.
She sends another request for any other available story and it is explained that a Reading, Discussion and Chatroom platforms exist for the stories on WhatsApp. Links to running stories are posted on the Reading platforms daily. She asks to be a part and shortly afterwards the rules and links to the Discussion and Chatroom WhatsApp Platforms are forwarded to her.
As soon as she posts her agreement to the rules of the platforms she is added to the reading page. A link to another story, 45 Days, is posted that morning and she follows it without a second thought. She realizes it is another ChrisEffe Romance Series, featuring the same character cast in Wedding of My Ex.
She reads the intro and realizes the ChrisEffe series uses the same casts for a totally different story. The opening episode which is about a betrayal draws her to the story even more.
She stays up to read the whole story on the website since it was incredibly difficult to put it down once she started.
