EPISODE 7
Maa Adjoa is on the balcony of her apartment.
She stares out at the vast expanse of buildings and vegetation spread out before her. The sun is setting and birds go about their business without a care in the world.
She has just come home from work, changed and is ready for jogging but suddenly she is worried. She wonders if she will ever love again. Maa Adjoa is suddenly worried if she will spend the rest of her life alone. She wonders if she can break away from the fear in her heart that no man will want her now that she has lost her virginity. Growing up, she was made to believe that marrying a virgin is the most priceless gift ever.
She shrugs miserably.
“Well, I’m not going to cry over spilt milk. I’m going to spread my wings and learn how to fly with that tiny dent in it. I’ll take the risk, take a chance and make a change. I’ll do whatever it takes till I touch the sky. Love will find me again!”
She secures the cap on her head and ran down the stairs. She is soon out of the security gate of the lavish apartment jogging with earphones in her ears.
In truth, she is really enjoying the air that caresses her face as she runs, harder than any other day until she is breathless. She has run through the length and breadth of the estates and finds herself in some woods.
It looks more like a garden of sorts for meditation or something like that. There are trees all over the place with benches scattered at vantage points. The benches are not that many but the trees are making the place a little dark after sunset.
The sun has just gone down but it is not completely dark yet. She looks around her and wonders if it is part of the estate or it is private property. The woods really scare her. This tells her she has come too far this time.
She stops running and finds a tree nearby. She leans against it to catch her breath. Maa Adjoa has consistently gone jogging a few months after the breakup and she is loving every minute of it. She closes her eyes for a brief moment and she sees a guy pretending to be tying his sneaker laces a few yards away from her.
That is about the third time she has seen him do that or do something equally suspicious. It seems like he is trying to catch her attention or he is plainly following her. The thought that he might be stalking her really frightens her since she is too far away from the security post, and there were no other settlements in sight.
She resumes jogging and sees him trotting along confirming her suspicions. She changes direction and heads back, suddenly fearing the worse. Evidently, she has to get close to the security post as soon as possible. She will be safe then.
Surprisingly the guy still follows her. Maa Adjoa increases her pace, but the guy still follows her. Her lungs are starving of air; her brain is urging her to push on until she sees the security post a few yards ahead.
Maa Adjoa stops a few meters from the security post and waits. He catches up with her and slows down too as if to say or do something.
“Are you stalking me?” She asks in a loud voice, still trying to catch her breath.
“Not really, miss! Will you blame me if I were? You are a true delight to watch. Jogging makes you even sexier.”
“You pervert, stop stalking me or I’ll call security right this minute.”
“Sorry if I offended you. That was not my intention. I live in the same apartment as you. Directly a floor above yours. Moved in a month ago. I see you exercise quite frequently and I kind of admire you for that. I’ve always wanted to exercise but feel lazy to do it alone. So, I decided to follow you anytime you went out just for the company, I guess. Sorry if my actions scared you. I’ll do you no harm, miss. Sorry!”
Maa Adjoa feels her defences breaking down by his gentleness and swift apology. She takes a closer look at him. He is not one of the guys you will consider handsome but there is something about him that makes him attractive. He is not six feet tall but he towers over her by a few inches.
And he has a sweet smile on his face as she peruses him and his eyes, oh, his eyes are the brightest she has ever seen. Even in the near darkness, she sees them shine when he smiles at her.
“That’s okay. You could have just asked to join me. You really scared the bejesus out of me.”
“So sorry about that. Are we cool?”
“Yea… if what you are saying is true.”
“Come on, don’t tell me you are doubting me. We can find out from the security desk right now. If I wanted to harm you, don’t you think I would have done that by now?”
Adjoa looks at him. His eyes stared her down with hurtfulness in them. Her doubting him is hurting him that bad.
“Okay, let’s just say I believe you. Why would you care anyway? You shouldn’t go about scaring people like that.”
“I’ve apologized for it and I’ll do it again if that’s what you want, I ain’t a bad person and I hate it when people doubt me because I try to be as honest as possible in everything.”
“Forgive me for being rude to you. I was just scared.”
“Well, apology accepted. Does that mean I can join you henceforth?” he asks with a smug smile on his face.
“I still don’t know you. I don’t know if I should say yes or no.”
“Yep, I can understand your dilemma. But I live here too and I’m not going anywhere for a while. If it’ll ease your discomfort, I will log in every time I go out with you at the security desk so they can hunt me down if I disappear with you. Will give you my folks’ numbers too, if that will give you some peace of mind. I’m Lexis, by the way.” He says and extends his right hand.
“Adjoa.”
Adjoa extends her hand too. They shake hands briefly and let go.
“Pleased to meet you, ethereal Adjoa.”
Adjoa smiles shyly.
“Do you go about flirting with every woman you meet?”
“No, only with you. I’m just stating the truth, Adjoa. Your beauty is out of this world and I’m not talking about what I see. There’s more to you I see than you can imagine.”
“Really? Are you a seer now?” she asks with a smile.
“I like the way you smile, it’s beautiful. It lights up your soul!”
Adjoa finds herself blushing at his compliments.
“My soul? Now you are scaring me. You see my soul?”
“Why not. I see your very being. You are a kind person. I see it in your smile.”
“Give me a break, freak.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Lexis says with a smile. “If you are not too tired, we can grab a bite from the restaurant just here, their food is nice.”
“Naaa, I just want to shower first before anything else.”
“In that case, can I come and bath your back for you, I promise I’ll close my eyes.”
“Very funny, don’t push your luck Lexis. Don’t push it. Just go and sleep.”
“But I’m famished. I was just about eating when I saw you storm out. I had to stop and toe the line. Please, I can fill you in on anything else you want to know about me over dinner so you can be comfortable around me.”
Adjoa looks at his pleading eyes and finds it difficult to say no but her third senses are telling her to take a rain cheque on it. She is really tempted to say yes but a voice inside of her is pulling at her.
“I’m really sorry, Lexis. Will take a rain cheque on that. I’m not hungry. Will see you around.”
They walk into the compound of the apartment.
Lexis sees Adjoa to her door and climbs to the next floor to his apartment.
He smiles to himself whiles he takes a shower.
He admits he’s never been intimidated by a woman ever but the black beauty he has just spoken to really stirs up all his nerves.
And he is sure something good was going to come out of his trip to his roots this time.
