EPISODE 8

Maa Adjoa and Lexis have routinely gone for a jog around the neighbourhood since their first encounter. She has gathered from the chitchats on their jogging dates that he was born and bred in the UK and is in Ghana for feasibility studies for a business he has in mind.

She has told him all about her minus the Kwamena factor.

This particular evening, as they stand in front of the entrance to the plush apartment they share but not as a couple, there seem to be a fondness, more like an awareness between them.

Lexis for some reason hasn’t had enough of her company just yet and the fact that they will be going to their separate apartments fill him with misery.

Maa Adjoa is also feeling she does not want the day to end just yet. Lexis is fun to be with and every time she is with him her world has all the light it needs.

“There’s this movie, The Jailbird, A ChrisEffe something by a Ghanaian premiering at the theatre tomorrow, I was wondering if you will like to see it? ” Lexis says, trying hard to hide his fear of getting a no for his request.

“The Jailbird? ChrisEffe Romance Series? Are you kidding me?” Adjoa reacts.

“Why, you familiar with the story?” Lexis counters, confused. He’s seen the way the mention of The Jailbird has hyped her mood instantly.

“Familiar? No, I love the story and yes, I would like to see it.”

“With me, I mean!”

“Sure. Will see it with you.” Adjoa replies without giving it a second thought.

Lexis cannot hide his joy. He has finally managed to get a date with the girl who has taken over his heart from the very first time he spoke to her.

Adjoa’s attention is drawn to the boyish grin on his face and then it sinks in.

“Hey, did you just ask me out on a date?”

Lexis shrugs with a smile. “No, I just got you to accept to spend a little time with ‘yours truly.”

Adjoa smiles shyly. Somehow, the thought of spending time with him sounds appealing. There has never been a dull moment in his company.

“You shouldn’t brag too much, I can change my mind, you know.” Adjoa teases.

“That will be unacceptable, dear. A lady keeps her word. I’ll make it worth your while, so please don’t deny me this singular honour of a lifetime.”

Maa Adjoa takes a long look at him. She feels her heartbeats quickening by his compliment.

“You better go before I change my mind.” she says, trying hard to play down the excitement in her heart.

“I’ve got to make sure you are safe and sound in your apartment first.” he says and grabs her hand. He leads her to her doorstep still holding her hand.

Her skin feels soft under his touch and he is particularly pleased with the sweet and warm ‘current ‘ that passes between them. He feels her shiver under his touch and he is happy he affects her so.

He gives her a peck on each cheek and releases her hand.

Maa Adjoa loses her balance. He draws out his hand swiftly to steady her. He pulls her close and holds her for a while longer, enjoying the closeness and fighting the urge to kiss her fully but he knows it’s too soon.

They both tremble from the closeness. They stay in the moment a while longer then, break away slowly.

Lexis bids her good night and waits for her to get inside.

Maa Adjoa enters the room and closes it behind her. She leans on the door and smiles to herself. She closes her eyes to relive the moment when she was in his arms, those powerful arms that seem to be communicating that they would never make her heart break.

Maa Adjoa fights the urge to open the door to see if he is still there but somehow, she knows he is there, just behind her door possibly reliving the magic that passed between them a few minutes ago.

Lexis runs up the stairs smiling to himself. It is as if he has won a jackpot of gold. He enters his apartment and goes straight to shower.

Maa Adjoa also enters the shower around the same time and allows the running water to extinguish the fire burning within her from the closeness.

Later in the day, Lexis lies on his bed unable to sleep. Maa Adjoa has occupied his thoughts. He is getting scared because he is falling too deeply in love with her. He is not sure if she is available and most importantly if she loves him as much as he does her.

Lex hears giggles from her room and wonders what could be amusing her so much at that ungodly hour. There’s only one way to find out.

He thinks of going to bang on her door but decides against it.

He pulls out his phone and turns to WhatsApp.

No one. I’m reading the day’s threads from the Chatroom. These people are so exciting and some are extremely fun to read. Sometimes I wonder where they all came from. These are people from different backgrounds yet so good together.

Lexis

The Chatroom? What’s that?

Maa Adjoa takes time to explain things to him and forwards some of the funniest posts to him.

Lexis sighs with relief and laughs out loud, happy that it wasn’t what he feared.

He drifts off to sleep with a smile on his face.
