EPISODE 13
Maa Adjoa concentrates all her energy on the wedding preparations.
She had travelled to her folks’ place with Lexis for a weekend and to let them get to know him better. They had all shared a most fulfilling time together.
Her mom especially had dotted on Lexis as if he were one of her own. Even her older brother, the toughest to impress in the family, had been won over by Lexis with his usual charm and his love for Maa Adjoa, his only sister.
Lexi’s mom had insisted on a last birthday bash for her son before tying the knot and Lexis had no option than to accept. She has convinced him it is more of an engagement party for him and Maa Adjoa and now Maa Adjoa is in a dilemma. She has to get a present for Lexis but has no idea what to get him.
One afternoon she steps out of the office and drives out of the office.
She is using her break time to look around if she can get something appropriate for the king of her life. She goes from place to place and shop to shop but does not see anything that catches her eye.
Maa Adjoa finally enters Men’s Groove, a shop specifically for guys. It is stocked with everything a man will need; clothes, necklaces, rings, magazines, bracelets and many more.
Quickly, she goes to the T-shirt session to see if something can appeal to her but nothing does. She goes to the suits and tie session looking for a tie or something special but still does not find anything.
She is on her way to the sneakers session when she comes face to face with Kwamena who has a pair of sneakers in his hands and is headed for the counter.
“Hey Maj! What a pleasant surprise to see you. What are you doing here?” he asks as he tries to hug her but she steps away from him.
“Why, not even a hug for me? We are not enemies, are we?”
“No, we are not but some things just got to stop.”
“Is that so? This is a shop for guys, what are you doing here?”
“Looking for something for a special guy.”
“If that is aimed at hurting me, you succeeded. I know I hurt you badly. I see you now and all I see is you are happier without me and sometimes it gets to me. Maj, I miss you sometimes. You always treated me well. You didn’t deserve what I did to you.”
“Kay, you didn’t do anything wrong. I think I have to thank you for being honest with me. I wouldn’t have known the difference if you had not left me. It was painful, yes, but I got over it and now I’m moving on.”
“Moving on with the guy at the restaurant? What do you know about him? I know you guys jog together but he could be pretending to love you although I see you are totally into him.”
“How did you know we jog together?”
“Well, there were these two occasions I really felt down because May-Glory was giving me a hard time. She doesn’t seem mature enough for my liking. She talks to her parents about everything and most of the time she takes our issues to them too and it makes me angry. I got tired of that at a point and decided to look you up, you know just to see if we could talk but I saw you moving to the woods with that guy, hand in hand. I don’t really blame you for anything but all I can say is I was happier with you.”
“Is that supposed to make me happy? Well, it doesn’t and not for the reasons you are thinking. You fell in love, live with it. You may think I don’t know what I’m doing with Lexis but I do. I love him and the best part is he loves me too.”
“How do you know, Maj? How do you know he loves you? We can pretend, we can charm you into thinking we love you but there’s only one thing we seek.”
“You know what, I don’t have to explain myself to you. I don’t owe you anything. I know what I know and I’m sticking by it. You should learn to work out your issues with your May Flower or whatever her name is. If you have an issue with her, talk to her. Let her know how you feel and don’t come looking for me.”
“Don’t shut me out, Maj. I need you, even if it’s just to be a friend. It’s easier talking to you. You may understand how I feel and advice. I see the way you two smile together and I know you are happier with him. A part of me is happy for you but it gets to me that I never made you smile that broadly when you were with me.”
“There’s no point hanging on to the past, Kay. It’s lost forever. Decide what you really want with your flower girlfriend and let her know how you are feeling, that’s the only advice I can give you. I must find what I’m looking for before my lunchtime is over. Wish you the very best with May-Flower.”
Maa Adjoa moves away from Kay and heads for the jewellery session.
Kwamena looks at her retreating back and feels a sharp pain in his heart.
He is sure he loves May-Glory but seeing Maj with another man really does something unpleasant to him.
Could he have been mistaken?
Whatever it is, he has to live with it. It is very clear Maa Adjoa has completely gotten over him and has moved on. He has tried to be happy with May-Glory but she is so childish.
First, she cancelled their wedding because she thought he was marrying her because of the pregnancy and now that the baby is born, she gives one excuse after the other. It’s as if she doesn’t want to leave the comforts of her parent’s home or her personal comfort zone. She is making him doubt if she ever loved him. He has to do something about it if he wants his sanity intact.
He walks dejectedly to the counter, pays for the sneakers and heads out.
Maa Adjoa finally settles on a bracelet since she sees Lexis wearing them a lot. She asks that Lexis’ initials be crafted at the top for pick-up later that evening. She pays the required deposit and heads for her car. Thankfully, Kwamena is long gone by the time she gets to her car.
She sees a paper stuck under the left wiper blade of her car and gets down to take it and read.
Wish you the best too, Maj. If he ever breaks your heart the way lovers do, just know I’ll be here for you. Kay!
Maj just smiles sarcastically and shakes her head.
