Princess Uvbi Akenzua noticed something that made her catch her breath suddenly!
Over the weeks, ever since she became acquinted with that strange warrior with the piercing eyes and fair nose called Okakuo Agbons, her stay in the oppressive tower had become a bit bearable.
Nowadays, she did not have to press the red knob to summon him. The Commander of the Tower Warriors, Abiodun Moshe, had evidently noticed how she pressed the red knob a lot when Okakuo Agbons was on duty, and so he always sent Okakuo up deep in the night to spend a few minutes chatting with the princess.
Abiodun Moshe was old, and he had known King Demi. He had not believed the evil stories about King Demi going insane after engaging in evil practices and then murdering his own mother. Abiodun Moshe knew something out of the ordinary had happened to cause the king to draw his sword on his own mother, and so he felt very sorry for the princess and her mother, Queen Kelly Philip trapped in the dungeons of the old palace.
That was why he sent Okakuo Agbons up each time the young man was on duty to speak to the princess.
That night, Princess Uvbi Akenzua had preferred to be in the tower gardens, her favourite place, with Okakuo. They had walked around the garden, sat in the chairs, and lingered along the swimming pool. Okakuo kept insisting that he had stayed too long already, and needed to go back.
“No, I still need you here,” Princess Akenzua said with a glint in her eyes. “You will return when I’m ready to sleep.”
Okakuo looked at her worriedly.
“People talk, Princess,” he said quietly. “The other guards cannot be trusted. Sooner than later, one of them will talk, and we’ll be in serious trouble.”
She scowled teasingly at him.
“Are you afraid of my cousin?” she asked, fluttering her eyelashes at him. “I thought you would do anything for me.”
He looked at her for a long time, and sighed worriedly.

“Yes, I’ll do anything for you, Princess, and I fear no man,” he said levelly. “However, we have to be rational.”
“Rational!” she said with a sad smile. “I like that, because it tells me that beneath that metal mask, and the coldness of your gaze, you do care for me. You feel something for me, don’t you, Kak?”
Again, he looked at her levelly for a long time, and then he sighed tremulously.
“Goodnight, Princess,” he said and bowed low to her, and that was when she saw that the padlocks at the back of his masks were not locked!
All three of them!
She was so shocked that she gasped!
How was that possible?
Abiodun Moshe had never been that careless! Surely, this couldn’t be an accident!
Okakuo straightened and turned toward the entrance.
Princess Akenzua regained her breath and spoke hurriedly.
“Wait!” she said sharply, and he stopped and turned.
She walked up to him, and stood staring into his mysterious eyes.
“Tell me you feel nothing for me, Kak,” she said softly as her heart pounded. “Tell me you see me as just a princess who’s going to marry her own cousin to save her mother, and nothing more. If you can tell me that, I’ll never demand that you come here again.”
Suddenly, he reached out and grabbed her arms tightly, causing her to cry out.
“Stop torturing me, Princess!” he said harshly. “Please, stop torturing me! You and I are on paths that will never cross!”
She gasped, but stared right back at him.
“You have a lover then, I presume,” she said softly.
He let her go and shook his head, and his eyes were tortured.
“No, there is no other!” he said harshly. “But stop thinking whatever fool things are running through your head, do you understand? It will only bring great trouble for both of us! We live in very dangerous times!”
Princess Akenzua, breathing fast, put her hands on his shoulders and glared at him.
“Do you love me, Kak?” she asked softly.
He moved away from her, his eyes deeply troubled.
“Goodnight, Princess,” he said with a bow.
She followed him.
“Do you love me, Kak?” she asked softly, her lips trembling. “It is a simple yes or no, isn’t it?”
He turned on her savagely.
“It is not a simple yes or no!” he shouted passionately. “You’re for the king! You hold the destiny of Dayo in your hands! He locked you up in the tower so that no man will see you, and you will see no man! You have seen just my nose and my eyes, so what kind of nonsense question is that? It is a stupid question, a dangerous question, and you know it! So stop asking it!”
Tears came to Princess Akenzua’s eyes, and her lips trembled more as she walked close to him.
“Do you love me, Kak?” she whispered. “Even though you’re afraid, I want you to face the question!”

“I won’t face any question!” he cried passionately. “Damn you, Princess! Yes, damn it, I love you! Are you happy now? I fell in love with you the first time I saw you at the Dayo Square during Dayo Day, when you were but a child…and I’ve loved you ever since! I knew that day, as I stood with my mother and watched you on the podium with your parents, that I was going to be a warrior so that I could be close to you, and hope that you notice me! So yes, you crazy little Princess, I love you! I have loved you all my bloody life! Are you satisfied?”
Princess Akenzua was trembling as she put her arms around his neck and pressed herself against him, into his armour. With a groan his strong arms came around her, and he held her close, and listened to her heart beating. He was so intent on the moment that he barely noticed her hands moving, and he was unaware that she had removed the padlocks at the back of his mask, and dropped them on the floor.
The interlocking metal slipped and fell, and Okakuo Agbons felt an easing of the mask on his face. He suddenly stepped back, alarmed, and Princess Uvbi Akenzua deftly reached up, held the metal face of the iron mask, and pulled it off his face.
“Nooo!” Okakuo screamed, petrified with fear as he stood looking at her. “Oh, no, no, no! What have you done, my love?”
It was the first male face she had seen as an adult except that of Temitayo Anubi. Princess Uvbi Akenzua looked at the handsome, young face in front of her, and her heart melted.
It was more than she had imagined in her mind, and in her dreams. He wasn’t too handsome, no, not in the way of her father. It seemed there would never be a man as handsome as her father, but the young man facing her with his stunned face was perfect for her, and it made her smile shyly.
“I didn’t do it, Kak,” she whispered tremulously. “I saw the padlocks were unlocked when you bowed to me.”
“Abiodun, that old bastard!” Okakuo whispered, and the Princess nodded.
“Yes, I believe he did it, to help us.”
“No, despite his good intentions, he just sentenced me to death,” Okakuo said, still horrified.
“No!” Princess Uvbi said desperately. “Don’t speak of such evil, please, my love!”
Okakuo came close to take the face plate from her, and then, quite suddenly, they reached out for each other. His arms crushed her, and her arms were like steel bands around his neck.
And when their lips met in a tender kiss, it was the first for either of them, and it simply took their breaths and fused it as one, so that they breathed each other.
