CHAPTER 11
Nneka Okez, tears slowly falling down her face, moved back slowly until her back came up against the wall.
She watched with bated breath as the spirit of Jhon Moziz became invisible, then visible, and continued to change in density, becoming solid one moment, and transparent the next moment.
“Weak, I am,” the Grand Oracle said in a very weak voice.
He stretched out his hands, and Temi’s body lifted off the ground and hovered in the air. John Moziz moved his hands to the right, and Temi’s body followed in that direction, and then the Grand Oracle lowered his hands, bringing Temi down gently on one of the settees.
The spirit moved lethargically toward Temi, and then his hands moved slowly across the face of the prince, hovering around the limp Temi’s temples.
Finally, the Grand Oracle hovered in the air just in front of the petrified Nneka.
“You will not mention the handle of the earthling again to him, do you understand?” the spirit said harshly.
“H-han-handle?” Nneka spluttered. “Earthling? I know not what you speak of, Grand Oracle!”
“Don’t you ever mention Neji Helen to him again!” Jhon Moziz said in a very weak voice, shimmering rapidly as if he found it difficult making himself visible. “Do you understand? I tried to take his mind off the Earthling, but alas, I am very weak. I hope I succeeded. He will sleep, for long hours. You should leave him be, woman until he wakes, and hopefully, he shall have no recollection of what transpired between you two.”
Nneka nodded.
“Yes, yes, but please, I’m so confused!” she said in a rush. “That tragedy…”
Her voice trailed off because the spirit of Jhon Moziz had disappeared.
She remained standing against the wall for some time, and then she finally walked toward the inert form of Temi. She sat with him for a long time, hoping he would regain consciousness so that she could feel his arms around her one more time, and feel the delight of his kisses, but he remained in that lifeless stupor for a long time.
The spirit of Jhon Moziz had already told her that he would remain unconscious for a long time, and so finally, when the rays of the sun began to go down and the edges of darkness began to steal across the sky, she knew it was time to leave him alone and go back to her abode.
She leaned across him and kissed his cold lips desperately.
“Wake up, love, for me, Temi,” she whispered tremulously with tears in her eyes. “I love you, and cannot imagine my life without you.”

She stood up and walked quickly out of the room to the main door, opened it, and stepped outside. She gasped when she saw that she had stayed for too long! The shadows of night had crept faster than she had imagined! Nneka uttered a cry of terror and began to run down the steps in haste toward her allocated house.
Already, the Haven was deserted!
They had all fled into barricaded rooms to stay away from the White Kombas.
She did not know that as soon as she left the Royal Quarters, Rose Amaefule emerged from a corner of the house and raced up the steps into Temi’s house. Rose quickly locked the door and removed the key which she dropped into a side pocket of her dress.
She moved to the window near the door, opened it a fraction and peered out. Rose saw Nneka running across the bridge, and she saw the shadowy figure of Ziloux Escobar Adeyeye moving swiftly from the side of the bridge and coming up behind Nneka.
The widow heard a rustling sound behind her and began to turn, but Ziloux lunged forward and covered her nose with a huge handkerchief in his gloved hand. Nneka took one sniff of the deadly substance in the handkerchief, and then she keeled over in a faint.
Rose nodded with satisfaction, and then she moved quickly through the Royal Quarters in search of Temi, whom she eventually found in the living room, asleep deeply in a settee.
She smiled happily. Everything was working according to plan, and it pleased her very much. Lady Providence, apparently, was on her side.
Ziloux quickly lowered her on the ground and left her. He removed his gloves and threw them and the soaked handkerchief into the lake, and then he began to run very fast toward a building adjacent to Nneka’s house. It was the healing house of Sage Ogu Samuel.
He pounded on the door, and it was opened eventually by a terrified Sage Agu.
“Adeyeye!” the Sage said in a scared voice as he unbolted the door and opened it wide for Ziloux to step in. “Are you out of your mind? What are you doing here at this time? The monsters could have attacked you! I can already hear them coming!”
“Sorry, Sage,” Ziloux said with feigned docile meekness. “I missed my friend. I haven’t been able to check on him today so I decided to come and visit him. How’s he doing?”
“Godwin is finally healed!” the Sage said as he turned away. “All his broken bones are healed except his body pains. By tomorrow he should be as good as new.”
“That’s good news, really good news!” Ziloux said excitedly. “Can I speak to him?”
“Certainly,” the Sage said. “You can spend the night in the Healing Room if you want.”
“Thank you very much, Wise Sage,” Ziloux said. “You’re most kind.”
He walked rapidly to the Healing Room and found the giant figure of Daniel Godwin still lying in bed wearing a white jumpsuit, evident that he was indeed far into the mend.
“Zil, you old goat!” Daniel Godwin said with a weak smile. “Missed your ugly face.”
“Danny, my Lord, my King!” Ziloux said as he moved to the side of the bed and looked down fondly at the giant.
“Come on, help me sit up,” Daniel said, holding out his hand.
Ziloux grabbed his friend’s hand and leveraged him up, and then the two of them hugged quickly.
“Glad you could make it, my Lord,” Ziloux said tenderly. “I’m so glad! Don’t worry, Danny. I took care of business. You’ll be back in the saddle as our leader by tomorrow morning.”
Daniel began to speak, but then he heard a horrible roar from outside the window, and he shuddered involuntarily.
The White Kombas were on the prowl!
“Vile beasts denying us the beauties of the night!” Daniel Godwin said dourly. “How’s my little brother doing? What fool things have you been up to now, Zil?”
“I took care of them!” Ziloux Escobar Adeyeye said bleakly. “He and his whore of a woman both perish tonight! You will be back as our leader, Danny.”
He did not see the happy smile he had expected on the giant’s face. Instead, he saw a stony coldness on Daniel Godwin’s face that began to unnerve him.
“What did you do?” Daniel asked softly.

With a sly smile, Ziloux told the giant what he had just done!
Daniel Godwin’s face slowly lost its little colour and became still with sudden terror.
Without warning his right fist swung out, straight into Ziloux’s face, breaking the man’s nose and smashing him back against the wall where he sprained his back and fell to the floor screaming in agony!
The severe pain lancing through his back was unbearable, and blood covered his face like a sort of macabre mask!
Tears of agony stung his eyes as he looked up at the huge bulk of Daniel Godwin towering above him.
“What’s the meaning of this?” Ziloux cried painfully. “Why, Danny? I did it for you! Why have you done this thing to me?”
Daniel Godwin looked down at Ziloux with his eyes blazing hatred.
“I’ve always believed I am ordained to be king of Dayo!” Daniel grated out harshly. “That was why my heart was filled with pain and jealousy when Temi came, and that was why I allowed you to convince me to almost kill my own blood and flesh!”
“I did it for you!” Ziloux screamed as the door opened and Sage Agu came in, drawn by the noise and the raised voices.
“What’s going on here, gentlemen?” Sage Agu asked with apprehension.
Daniel Godwin pointed a stiff forefinger at Ziloux.
“Temi beat me fair and square, you bastard!” he grated through clenched teeth. “Temi had me at his mercy with his boot above my face! He could have killed me, but he spared me, and gave me a second chance!
I would’ve killed him if it had been me, but that’s what’s different between him and me! The freedom of Dayo is more important than any personal ambition, and if he’s the one The Creator has chosen to lead Dayo, then by Jove I’m going to pledge my allegiance to him!”

“You’re mad!” Ziloux Adeyeye screamed with passion and frustration. “I did it all for you! And is this how you betray me?”
“You piece of stinking shit!” Daniel growled furiously as he looked down at Ziloux. “That boy is the Heir Apparent! Did you see him moving as he fought and beat me? He’s the Chosen One, the man to lead Dayo out of the darkness! I swear to you, Ziloux, if your actions in any way harm my brother, I’ll tear you to pieces limb by limb!”
Ziloux tried to move, but he was in so much pain and couldn’t move a muscle. He looked up at the glowering figure of Daniel Godwin defiantly.
“I did it for you, stupid bastard!” he screamed in anguish.
With a roar, Daniel raised his foot.
“Stop it, Daniel, you’ll kill him!” Sage ago screamed and rushed forward to stand between Daniel and Ziloux. “What’s going on anyway?”
And just then, a horrible scream ripped across the whole of the Haven!
It was Nneka Okez screaming with indescribable terror!
