CHAPTERS 9 & 10
Rose stared at Escobar with sudden bated breath and excitement as a plan suddenly hit her.
What Escobar was suggesting was simple but effective: they would choose one night and make sure Nneka Okez would be stranded outside, alone. Rose would pick that day to hide in the Royal Quarters and alert Temi that Nneka was being attacked by the White Kombas.
Temi would run out to help the woman, and then the White Kombas would kill both of them. It was a brilliant plan, but Rose had other ideas.
She was so excited!
Yes, she would go along, and hide in Temi’s quarters. However, when the White Kombas came out and attack Nneka, Rose would not call for Temi. Even if Nneka screamed, and Temi heard her, Rose would make sure she had locked the front door and removed the key, or forcibly force Temi not to step out.
In that way, Temi would be saved, and Nneka would be killed by the White Kombas. Temi would grieve, and of course Rose would be there to help console him…and he would learn to trust her again, and then things would shape up from there!
She smiled craftily at Escobar.
“You’re such a brilliant man, Zil,” she said sweetly. “Go on, speak. Your plan might just be the answer we’re looking for.”
Ziloux Escobar Adeyeye breathed with relief, glad to have her attention and cooperation again. He pulled up the only chair in the room, placed it in front of her, sat down facing her, and began to speak earnestly.

Prosper Freeman looked up from the sheaf of papers in front of him and his eyes settled on Prince Temidayo.
They were in the library of the Royal Quarters, grouped around the huge desk. Across from him was Temi, and on his right was Walexman. Mickey King was sitting on the left.
“You don’t seem happy, my Lord,” Prosper said gently. “Perhaps, you have something else to say?”
Temi looked directly at Prosper Freeman, and then he got to his feet abruptly and walked to the window. Although the blinds were still across the glass panes, he stood there staring at it for a long time as if he could see outside.
Finally, he sighed and turned.
“So, here’s the plan,” he said gently. “I go to the Dayo Western District and go to the Court of Luciano Alexander, who is the Lady Of Power over there. I seduce her, because obviously she likes men a lot, and impress her with the skills I have learnt from Shemen Persis.
And then, I find out who her best fighter is, defeat that fighter, and Luciano would then let me represent her District at the fighting competition in Dayo Square during the wedding of my sister. I grab the Royal DayoSword, and get rid of Temitayo Anubi and Leke Olugbade Bally. Then I free the Grand Oracle from the Rock Of Redemption. Good so far?”
The three men looked at each other, and then Prosper Freeman nodded.
“That about sums it up, my Lord,” he said softly.
Temi walked back to the table and put his hands flat on its surface as he looked at Prosper.
“Tell me, Commander Freeman, how I am going to convince this Luciano Alexander that I am who I claim to be.”
“I don’t understand, my Lord,” Walexman said. “Is there something we should know?”
“Yes, actually there is,” Temi said quietly. “You claim this Luciano lady used to be a senior member of my father’s administration, and later pitched camp with Temitayo. That means she knows my father well. What do you think she will think when I show up and I look exactly like my father, huh? She will know immediately that I am the son of King Demi.”
They looked at each other, and then Prosper sighed.
“We were thinking of a disguise of the face, my Lord,” he said softly. “We have experts here who can help you disguise yourself so that you wouldn’t be recognizable.”
“That will work, yes, if I don’t have to…sleep with this woman! I have the same body marks of my father, remember? You can’t disguise all of me. and this disguise, it is not safe. A wig can come off, a fake beard can be grabbed by someone I’m fighting, and come off. No, this plan has too many loopholes!”
The other men stared at each other for a second, and then Mickey King cleared his throat as he stared at Temi.
“Perhaps, the Heir Apparent has a better idea about how we can…circumvent these loopholes?” he asked.
Temi straightened up and folded his arms across his broad chest, his facial expression a thoughtful one.
“I don’t, actually,” he said calmly. “But let’s sleep on it tonight, and give it a thought. Tomorrow, I daresay, there shall be an elucidation of this problem.”
And then it happened!
The lights in the library began to flicker, and the room shook rather alarmingly! The tables and the bookshelves rumbled, and so did the chairs and other fittings in the room!
Some of the huge voluminous books fell off the bookshelves and crashed down on the floor.
“What vile evil is this?” Prosper Freeman muttered as he got to his feet and drew his sword.
Walexman and Mickey did likewise, and they crouched into defense as they looked all around with confused eyes as the tremor continued to shake the room. It was only Temi who appeared noticeably unperturbed as he dropped his arms and looked at the flickering lights with interest.
And then, as quickly as it had started, the tremor stopped.
“Look!” Mickey shouted with sudden fear and pointed.
They all followed his pointing hand and saw it!
It was a hand!
Just a huge right hand hanging in the air. It was a slim, beautiful male hand, dark and simply hanging in the air.
“Sorcery!” Walexman said and took steps toward the hand with his sword raised.
“Wait, Walex!” Temi said sharply, and Walexman stopped.

The hand suddenly burst into wild flames!
It was hanging in the air and burning furiously!
It travelled in the air toward the white blank wall on the left, and then its forefinger extended, and then it began to write on the wall!
The letters were crude ancient letters, and Prosper Freeman scowled as the hand moved in a frenzy along the wall, writing black letters on the white background, letters that burned for a moment then went out.
The hand moved fast, writing fast in bulleted format, the letters forming words that no one understood.
“It is the ancient scrolls!” Prosper said with an unsteady voice. “No one can read that, now! What is going on here? We need to ask the Sage or the Seer if anybody can read and understand this! Seems to be an important message from the Creator of All Things! History books have records of such a hand appearing to the kings of Dayo sometimes and bringing them messages!”
Temidayo walked slowly toward the writing hand, his young handsome face intrigued as he followed the writing of the strange burning hand.
And then the hand finally stopped writing!
It turned slowly, and then the forefinger extended, pointing at Temi.
The horrible tremor shook the room again, and then the burning hand vanished, together with the writing on the wall!
“Oh, no!” Prosper groaned with sudden despair. “The writing disappeared, and the message is gone! How’re are we going to understand it?”
Temidayo turned from the wall and faced them, and his young face was excited at first, and then it became sad.
“What is a Mimic artefact?” he asked softly.
Prosper Freeman gasped and his eyes opened with mild surprise and great admiration.
“You understood the writing?” he asked hoarsely.
“I did,” Temi said. “It says I must journey to the Aradise and find a man called Emmanuel Suncity, the butcher. This man is an expert in Mimic artefacts, and he will mould one for me. Also, a young man by name Okakuo Agbons from Dayo, who knows my sister, has been sent to wait for me at this butcher’s house in Aradise.
Finally, the Grand Oracle, Jhon Moziz, perishes rapidly, and must be released from the Rock of Redemption otherwise he will die! Gentlemen, we have no time to waste. Make arrangements. Tomorrow we journey to Aradise. I ask again, anyone knows what a Mimic artefact is?”
Prosper nodded with admiration.
“To be able to read the ancient structures, and understand them, is indeed something awesome to behold. Indeed, you’re the king, my Lord. I’ve heard tales of the Mimic artefacts, but I always thought they were myths. They’re adornments, you know, like chains, rings, earrings, bracelets, crafted with secret magic. If you put on a Mimic artefact, it is believed to change you physically into a different look so that no one can discern you. In a way, it makes you a different person, a form of disguise, making you look like someone else. As I said, I thought they were myths.”
Temi nodded.
“I understand now,” he said gravely. “With a Mimic artefact, I can change my looks into someone else, and Luciano Alexander wouldn’t recognize me as kin and ilk of my father. Seems to me your plans are favoured by the Creator of All Things. Go and get deserved rests, my dear people. Tomorrow we will inform the Keepers, and then we shall journey to Aradise to find this butcher, Emmanuel Suncity.”
With relief and wonder, the four men shook hands and bid goodnight to each other although it was quite some hours yet before nightfall.
Temi accompanied them to the main door, and after they left he hurried to the living-room where the beautiful Nneka was standing at the window gazing out.
She was wearing a beautiful hand-knitted bluish dress that fitted her incredible figure like a dream.
“Nek, my love,” Temi said as he came up behind her. “Sorry for keeping you waiting so long, my flower.”
She turned to face him and smiled beautifully.

“I understand, my love,” she whispered. “A king has many headaches under the crown.”
Temi stopped and frowned.
“You look worried, my darling,” he said carefully. “I can see it in your eyes.”
She sighed deeply and raised a hand to her hair.
“You can read me,” she said in an unsteady voice. “And that is what makes you my love. Yes, indeed, I’ve been worried, my Lord. I heard rumours that make me think…”
Her voice trailed off, almost miserably, and he crossed the room quickly and took her in his arms.
“My darling, please!” he said tenderly and earnestly. “Do not be bothered by anything. I will not suffer you to be bothered! What troubles you? Come on, tell me, love! What are these rumours you heard?”
She put her arms around him and looked earnestly into his eyes.
“Forgive me, Temi, my precious!” she whispered. “I heard this girl…Rose Amaefule, spent the first night here with you. I’m not jealous, my Lord, and I don’t begrudge you the pleasures of the skin which I have so far not been able to provide to you, but..”
Temi put his lips on hers and kissed her tenderly and passionately.
Her body trembled as she kissed him back feverishly, and tears seeped beneath her closed eyelids.
He lifted his head and brushed tears from her cheeks with a tender, loving look on his handsome face.
“She sneaked in here to hide and beg me to forgive her for a heinous crime she committed against me,” he said softly. “I forgave her, of course, but I do not trust her, nor ever will, I daresay. She and her friends have the character of vile snakes.”
Her eyes opened wide with dawning horror.
“Goodness me!” she whispered tremulously. “She was on the hills the day you were wounded! Part of them?”
“Part of the killers, yes, my love,” he said. “So, you see, you have no need to worry your pretty head. It is you, and only you, my heart beats for.”
She smiled happily, and then she took a deep breath.
“There’s something I should’ve told you about a long time ago, my love,” she said worriedly. “Please, do forgive me, for keeping it from you because I was afraid that if you knew, you would’ve stopped me from coming with you.”
“Nothing, absolutely nothing, would’ve stopped me from bringing you with me, Nek, my precious.”
She shook her head frantically.

“But you don’t know for sure!” she said earnestly. “The spirit man, the Grand Oracle, he warned me. He appeared to me the morning I went up the hills to tie the white cloth. He said my presence with you will mark grief, that there are only two women meant for you, but he doesn’t know which. But I’m not one of them.”
“Two women!” Temi said with a laugh. “Don’t fret your beautiful head, my love. It is only you I need, and I’ll have you by my side no matter what.”
She nodded with a happy relieved smile.
“He mentioned Rose Amaefule,” she said, and Temi burst into peals of uncontrollable laughter as he turned away from her and walked toward the dining-room.
“Rose!” he said with complete disdain. “That Jhon Moziz must be roasted in the brain! I wouldn’t touch that scorpion with my sword even! Come, my love, break bread with me. You must be famished.”
A happy Nek followed him and linked her arm through his.
“That was why I was jealous when I heard she spent the night with you, my love,” she said with a relieved giggle. “But the Grand Oracle also mentioned another name, a name I’ve asked around but which no one seems to know. Do you know anyone by that name?”
“Who?” Temi asked in an uninterested voice.
“One Neji Helen, I believe!”
The name exploded in Temi’s head like an explosion of sorts!
It shattered his whole frame, and for a moment he could not breathe.
He paused suddenly, and then his heart and head were seized by a pain so severe that he dropped to his knees with the indescribable pain, his face awash with sweat as he struggled for breath!
He could hear Nneka’s screams from a long way off as hazy images of a beautiful girl smashed through his head…
Neji smiling…
Neji laughing, Neji holding him, kissing him!
In the doorway, crying, calling to him to return…
Washing at the riverside, guiding him to a room…
Touching him, loving him…
Neji Helen!
Neji!
The pain was physical and unbearable!
He was dying!
Nneka was shouting and weeping, trying to hold him up as he fell, his eyes rolling in his head as he drifted farther away from her!
“Stand back!” the voice of Jhon Moziz exploded in the room suddenly, and the wailing Nneka looked around frantically!
And there, hanging in the air in front of her, was the hazy black hood of Jhon Moziz!
