CHAPTER 14
Temi and the White Komba circled each other, their mutual respect for each other now evident. There was no fear in either of them, but both of them knew the other was well-versed in combat, and only a soft spot would suffice and ensure victory.
Once again they clashed, their movements frenzied and brutal, none wanting to give ground, both wanting to inflict the ultimate killing blow. Temi could feel the monster’s sharp arms and legs tearing into him, breaking his skin and arteries, causing him pain and making him bleed.
He refused to scream even though he was in excruciating pain!
He attacked with the blazing swords, cutting off the monster’s arms as he aimed for its throat, and finally the tip of the sword in his left hand sliced through the monster’s neck, decapitating it so that its head flew off its body as two of its arms fell to the ground, and the other arced into the air and fell into the lake!
Temi, badly bruised and wounded, dropped to one knee as blood spurted out of the hideous wounds on his body. The skin on his arms, body, and legs was severely slashed, and his clothes were drenched with blood!

All the White Kombas were silent as the body of their leader lay on the ground and its severed head also lay at another point, upside down!
“Surely, that damn thing is dead now,” Mickey King whispered.
“It should, dear Creator, let it die!” Daniel Godwin said weakly.
Temi struggled to his feet weakly as his body healed rapidly, and his eyes were fixed on the decapitated White Komba.
And again, it happened!
The arms of the White Komba slid along the grass and attached to the body again, and then its head shot up and fixed on its neck and attached itself tightly…and then the silver-headed White Komba jumped up with a ferocious roar!
“It is indestructible!” Prosper said with horror. “Those things cannot be killed!”
As the monster roared again and struck an attacking stance, Temi watched it with bated breath and his eyes narrowed suddenly at what he saw!
The beast was minus its middle arm!
That one had not attached itself again!
Why?
How?
And then the realization struck Temidayo forcefully…
That arm had fallen into the lake when Temi cut it off!
“Water cut, water wound!” Temidayo whispered excitedly and looked at the lake, and saw that the white arm of the White Komba was floating on the surface of the water, but it wasn’t solid anymore!
It was soft and pulpy as if it had melted!
“Water is their weakness!” Temi whispered suddenly. “They can drink water, and walk in water…but if the water was used to wound them, or cut them…the wound is permanent!”
He began to move forward with the Swords of Destiny gripped in his hands. The enraged White Komba moved in to meet him with its single eye filled with hatred.
Temi began to run as he held the Swords of Destiny away from his body. The White Komba screamed and raised its two arms too.
“Water edge!” Temi screamed and leaped into the air, and immediately the fire around the edges of the swords was replaced with running water. He twisted in the air and slashed with the swords, cutting off the arms of the White Komba again!
And then something awful happened!
The beast wailed horribly now, and it was a wail of pain!
It took frantic steps backward, its single eye filled with horror as its two arms fell on the grass and began to wilt! It looked at the swords in Temi’s hands, and it shook its head dazedly with horror and sudden fear!
The other White Kombas were moaning with acute distress now as Temidayo spun around with amazing agility and cut the White Komba into two halves, and then his left hand came round in a savage thrust that sliced off the head of the silver-headed White Komba.
Its head flew off, and a horrible green liquid shot out from its neck as its divided body crashed to the ground in two separate halves.
When its head landed on the grass, the white skin was no longer around it, but it had become a hideous skull-like thing!
And its body parts began to wilt and change too until they had become a horrible, bony, rotten mass!
“Water!” Daniel Godwin screamed loudly. “Temidayo attacked it with water edges of the swords! Get buckets! Get the water hoses! Spray them with water! Dip your arrows into the water and shoot at them! Dip your swords in water and attack them!”
The warriors let out wails of excitement as they rushed off.
The nine remaining White Kombas were making a strange, sorrowful wailing sound now as they all knelt around the rotten dead body parts of their leader. They looked so grief-stricken that Temi felt the sadness creeping over his body. Slowly, he dropped the Swords of Destiny on the grass, and then he walked toward the White Kombas.

They looked at him with sudden agitation and fear, cringing with horror, but he showed them his empty hands, and then he also knelt down on the grass with them and lived their wailing, mourning their loss with them.
He became suddenly aware of the screaming of the warriors, and when he looked up he saw that most of them had come across the bridge and were holding bucketfuls of water. Most had also dipped their arrows in water and were aiming at the White Kombas, whilst others were dipping their swords in water.
The White Kombas saw what was happening, and they wailed with sudden terror and huddled together miserably. Stripped of their allure and invisibility, they looked really terrified and pathetic indeed.
Temi jumped to his feet and rushed forward to block the forward advance of the warriors.
“Stop it, stop it!” he shouted. “They are no longer a threat to any of you! No one should attack them with water! Do so, and you’ll answer personally to me!”
The warriors looked at him with dismay, clearly disappointed that he had stopped them from exacting vengeance on these hateful monsters who had terrified them for so long.
“You heard the Heir Apparent!” Daniel Godwin said as he stepped forward. “Pour the water back in the lake and sheath your weapons!”
He walked forward slowly until he stood in front of Temi, and then he dropped to his knees and bowed low to Temidayo, reaching out to touch the right foot of the Heir Apparent in a gesture of complete humility.
“Forgive me, my Lord,” Daniel said quaveringly. “I sinned against you. Please, have mercy on me.”
Tears came to Temidayo’s eyes. He knew, deep down, that Daniel’s tears were real.
“To me, brother,” he said softly.
Daniel Godwin looked up at Temidayo’s compassionate face, and then he got to his feet with tears running down his face and hugged Temi in a fierce bear-hug.
“Brother!” Daniel Godwin said. “My little brother.”
“Always,” Temi replied.
“They even bow to you,” Daniel whispered, looking at a point behind Temi, and slowly he turned.
The fearsome White Kombas, aware that Temi had saved them from evident death, were now all on their knees before Temi.
Temi approached the middle White Komba and looked into its scared eyes. Slowly, the White Komba’s forehead began to shine brightly, and it put one of its hands to its forehead and extended another toward Temidayo.
Temi sighed, and then slowly held out his hand.
“Be careful, little brother!” Daniel Godwin said with a scowl. “I still don’t trust them!”
“They mean no harm now, Danny,” Temi said without fear.
The White Komba put the tip of its hand in the middle of Temi’s palm, and Temi experienced a sudden jolt as he heard the voice of the White Komba in his head!
“You saved us!” the message came. “Thank you!”
Temi concentrated, and sent a silent message.
“We will leave you alone if you will leave us alone!”
“We always left you alone! Until you came to our land and burned our burrows and lairs!”
“Trust me, because I’m the prince of Dayo! From this day, I promise you none of us will come to your region! And your secret will remain a secret with us!”
“We want peace! It is our Leader, the one you just slew, who was filled with hatred! Be it so. We will not hunt you again. Peace, there is!”
“Peace there is. I’ll tell my people.”
“I will also tell my kin! Thank you…Human Lord!”
“Thank you, my friend, for a change in our lives!”
The light on the White Komba’s forehead stopped shining, and then it put its hand down.
Temi stepped back, panting hard.
They all watched as the White Kombas gathered the body parts of their leader, and then they began to hop away solemnly.
Commander Prosper looked at Temi with awe.
“It is over?” he asked tremulously.
“It is over,” Temi said. “A new peace deal. We humans will keep out of their regions, and they will keep out of ours.”

“My Heavens, you spoke to them!” Ayaka Nsugbe said with excitement as he pushed his way forward. “I will let the Governing Council of Aradise hear this early in the morning! We can enjoy our night skies now?”
“Yes, you can,” Temi said with a sigh. “Now, if you will all excuse me, I want to rest.”
But they did not excuse him! Many of the Keepers and the warriors came to him, and hugged him warmly and with pride!
They sang his praises and screamed with joy and kept hugging him until he turned away.
Ziloux Escobar Adeyeye remained in the Healing Room all alone, and his heart beat with acute fear and trepidation as he wondered what would happen to him.
The people in the Haven stayed outside, almost all of them, enjoying the night stars for the very first time in many years!
Temidayo mounted the steps to the broken door and saw the two weeping women in the hallway.
His clothes were still painted red with his blood, but his body had healed completely.
“Temi!” Rose whispered as she came toward him.
Prince Temidayo stopped in front of the weeping Rose, and his cold eyes bored into her furiously.
“This is twice now, Rose Amaefule,” he said coldly. “The first time I forgave you, completely, without malice. This second time I forgive you, but I hate you. If this happens a third time, Rose, I promise you I’ll break your neck and spill the life out of you with my hands!”
Rose’s lips trembled, and her tears fell faster as she looked at him through the wall of her tears.
“Temi!” she whispered. “I’m so sorry! Please forgive me!”
“Go, Rose,” he said coldly. “Get the hell out of my sight.”
With a sob of pain, she slid past him and took flight as her tears still fell.
Nneka came toward him with her heart on her beautiful face.
“You’re such a grand man, my love,” she whispered tremulously, and then she wound her arms around his waist and pressed her tearful face to his chest. “And tonight, I can’t stay without you.”

“Ah, but that makes my whole body tingle fiercely, woman,” Temi groaned with passion. “But first, let me wash the scent of battle off my body, and then we’ll go outside and look at the moon for a while.”
“Oh, Temi!” she whispered quaveringly. “Can I wait that long?”
He chuckled as his head descended, and he kissed her slowly and tenderly. Her lips opened to accept him, and she moaned with desire as his hand slid deliciously across her right breast and his thumb elongated her excited nipple.
“You will simmer, yes, and it will make it the sweetest moment when our skins delight each other.”
When he went inside to clean up, Nneka leaned against the broken frame and looked outside. She smiled tenderly and with great happiness when she saw that the citizens of the Haven had come out, almost all of them, and they were sitting on the grass, lounging around the lake, or simply sitting in the open enjoying their first moonlit night in a long time!
There was the air of freedom, and the air of liberation all around. Happiness was here, a small victory brought about by their Heir Apparent!
“I love you, Temi,” she whispered to herself. “I love you so much! Make me a woman tonight, this night, because it is our night! Our very first night without the growl of a monster in our ears!”
