CHAPTER 22
[wp_ad_camp_1]“Yes, my love, my baby!” Rosalinda of the Tortors whispered with a serene expression on her face. “Oh, how I missed you!”
Great tears came to Rose’s eyes as she stared at her mother in this new realm, the woman who had been ripped so violently out of her life. Her lips trembled as she began to sob silently.
Her beloved mother, her sweet lovely mother! This woman’s death had filled Rose with the most bitter of galls all her life! Her mother’s death had made her detest the opposite sex with venom, and made her swear vengeance on all men, especially the royal family of Dayo.
A woman who had raised them with love, whose memory was etched forever in her mind’s eye! The only person Rose had ever truly loved with the very breath in her…her mother!
“Mama!” she whispered. “I missed you so much!”
Rosalinda glided over to her daughter and gently put an arm around her to half-embrace her, and then she helped the beautiful young woman to her feet…her physical contact made possible because they shared the link of the sirens.
“Shhh, my love,” Rosalinda hissed. “Mama is here now! You will stay with my family, and be a siren! You will never know a second of pain anymore, my love. I’m grateful you have returned to me!”
Rose hugged her mother tightly as she wept bitterly.

He tied the shirt around his head, right across the mud in his ears, locking them in so that he was almost totally deaf.
Igwe then picked up his sword and with a roar he rushed at the sirens around Temi, swinging furiously at them, but his sword could not harm them in any way. He turned his attention on the branches binding Temi and tried to cut them off.
With a screech of fury Rosalinda left her daughter and flashed forward. She grabbed Igwe around the neck, lifted him, and slammed him down viciously on the ground!
The old man groaned and arched his back in unbearable agony as a sharp pain ratcheted up his back.
Rosalinda raised her sword furiously.
“Mama!” Rose screamed horribly. “Please, don’t hurt them. One is my friend…and I love the prince, please!”
Rosalinda turned her cruel eyes on her daughter.
“No, you don’t have a future with the prince, my love!” she hissed furiously. “He dies here, now!”
“No!” Rose screamed in anguish and fell to her knees in front of her mother. “Please, spare him, I beg of you, please. I love him! I love him so!”
Igwe struggled to his feet painfully.
“Swords are useless against them,” he murmured painfully. “Only the Royal DayoSword can cut through vile spirits!”
The branches of the trees were drawing Temi tighter into their embrace, and he was now struggling for breath. The sirens swarmed over him, still whispering and touching, befuddling his brain!
“But what is happening?” Rose whispered in great agony. “I thought the minds of Dayan princes, the Heir Apparent, can’t be controlled!”
Rosalinda smiled savagely.
“No, my love, they all become mere mortals with feeble minds when they come over to the White Lands, dear. There’s no divine protection here! This is my kingdom, and this puny prince dies!”
“No, Mama, I beg of you, have mercy on me!” Rose wept bitterly. “He’s the only man for me! My only love!”
[wp_ad_camp_1]“And for that reason, more than any other reason, he will die, for daring to touch the heart of the daughter of Rosalinda of the Tortors!” the evil woman screeched.
She drew back her sword to strike Temi’s heart.
“Nooo!” Rose screamed in frenzy and rounded her mother with tears in her eyes. “I was lied to, Mama! I was told that King Demi’s Grand Oracle killed you when you refused his immoral advances, and then he imprisoned my father in the White Lands! But I met Father, and he told me you wanted control of the Dayan throne! You started all this, and this poor prince is trying to redeem Dayo! It is a good thing, mother! People have turned to stone, and we need to bring them back. And this prince has made my unfeeling heart beat again, and it is filled with love only for him. Mama, I beg of you, spare his life!”
Igwe dove fo Temi’s swords which were lying on his clothes on the ground, and he touched the hilt of the Royal DayoSword. He tried to draw out the sword, but the moment his hand touched the hilt terrible sparks shot from it, cutting through the forest!
Igwe was thrown back furiously by a strong repel blast from the royal sword, and he dropped it with a scream of sheer pain!
The Royal DayoSword left Igwe’s hand and carved through the air, emitting horrible flashes of laser-like light that cut through the sirens! They screamed with fear and pain as they were cut down by the flashes!
Rosalinda screamed and glided behind a tree to avoid the slashes from the divine sword!
The sword finally fell down at Rose’s feet and stopped glowing!
She looked around, horrified by the spectacle of so many sirens lying dead on the floor, and far away she could see Igwe’s inert figure!
Rosalinda emerged from behind the tree, saw the dead sirens, and then she let out a wail of pure torture. Her face was no longer beautiful as she looked at Temi with sizzling malevolent hatred.
“You will pay, you bastard!” she screeched and glided slowly toward Temi with the sword drawn back.
Rose had no option!
It was her mother against the man she loved, the man who was the only hope for the millions of people turned to stone in Dayo, and millions of earthlings!
In the final analysis, even as her tortured heart was torn to shreds by the anticipation of the end results of her planned actions, the choice boiled down to only one: she could not watch her Temi die!
[wp_ad_camp_1]She knew she would die if she touched the Royal DayoSword, but there was no other option.
Rose could not stand and watch her only love being murdered by her own mother.
“Mama!” Rose screamed, and then she blindly reached down and picked up the Royal DayoSword!
The sword sizzled and vibrated in her hands in a horrible manner, but it did not repulse her!
She was holding the Royal DayoSword!
How?
How could this even be remotely possible?
Why, dear Creator?
Why had the Royal DaySword almost snuffed out Igwe’s life when he touched it, but remained in her hands without so much as a prick?
What was the meaning of this?
The sirens screeched and fled from her with sheer horror!
Rosalinda pressed the tip of her sword against Temi’s heart, and her bitter eyes looked at Rose with harsh cruelty.
“You whore!” Rosalinda screamed. “You slept with him, didn’t you? You allowed this pig to put his stupid girth inside you!”
“No, Mama!” Rose said with tears falling down her face. “I’m still a virgin!”
“Then how can you hold that sword?” Rosalinda hissed furiously. “It is supposed to kill you! It is supposed to draw the very breath out of you for touching it, unless you parted your thighs for him, and made a covenant of sorts with him!”
“I don’t know how this is possible!” Rose screamed in anguish. “I don’t know. But go away, Mama! Follow your sirens and leave! Don’t force me to do this!”
“You will kill your own mother for this piece of garbage?” Rosalinda growled.
“You’re already dead, Mama,” Rose whispered in anguish. “You’re just a spirit now. And I love that man, Mama. I love him! Why can’t you understand that?”
“Because he is the catalyst to The Great Purge, and if I don’t kill him now, we’ll all die! Put down that thing, my darling.”
“Then let him go,” Rose said painfully. “Let him be, Mama!”
“No!” Rosalinda screamed with hatred. “He dies!”
She began to push her sword into Temi’s heart.
“Nooo!” Rose screamed and threw the Royal DayoSword at the spirit of her mother!
Its flashes sliced off Rosalinda’s head first, and then the arm holding the sword, and it clattered harmlessly to the floor!
Rosalinda screamed with great torture as the blast from the sword wound around her parts, and then began to drag her relentlessly into the sword!
“No, no, no!” Rosalinda screamed in anguish as she was drawn into the sword forcibly.
The flash from the sword was wound around her like a lasso, drawing her forward relentlessly. Her feet touched the edge of the Royal DayoSword, and she was sucked in fast up to her waist. She screamed over and over, causing Rose to fall down on her knees and clamp her palms to her ears. Tears of anguish fell down Rose’s cheeks as she tried to look away from the agony of her mother, but there was nothing she could do now.
Rosalinda was sucked in to her severed neck, and then it was left with her screaming head, which was the last to go, and her eyes stared at Rose with accusing intensity, and then that one too was gone!
Seeing their leader destroyed with such ferocity, the remaining sirens moaned with fright and rushed away, hitting the lake in a staccato frenzy and disappearing into its inky blueness!
The mist cleared then, and Rose wept bitterly as she mourned her mother!
Freed from the dreadful whispers at last, Temi whispered gently.
“To me, swords! Free me!”
The Swords of Destiny sailed through the air, and cut off the branches, releasing Temi.
He moved toward Rose rapidly with great remorse on his face.
“Roselyn,” he whispered, reaching out to touch her, filled with pain for the pain he saw registered on her face. “I’m so sorry!”
“Don’t you dare touch me!” Rose groaned with a broken heart. “Don’t touch me, Temi!”
She got to her feet in great grief, and fled into the trees still weeping inconsolably. Her spirit was broken, for once, and the agony in her heart could not be quantified.
She had made her decision, pushed between a rock and a hard place and faced with a devil’s alternative. Rose had no regret for her choice, no, but she had not wanted to see her mother – her beloved mother – suffering this way, or getting trapped inside the royal sword.
And, way up in the sky, the red eyes of Somtoo the demon had seen it all, and with a trace of terror in those eyes, he flashed across the sky fast to inform Leke Olugbadey Bally of the horrors he had seen.

Temi’s eyes glittered with tears as he knelt beside his uncle.
Igwe Peter Pedro had suffered from the terrible initial shock of the Royal DayoSword which had soared through him. He looked at Temi, and although there was great pain in his eyes, he smiled beautifully.
“Don’t look so morose, my son,” he whispered weakly. “This is the end of the line for me. I’m happy the Creator of All Things favoured me to play this role in The Purge.”
“No, Papa, you can’t die…please stay!” Temi said pitifully as he sat down and cradled Igwe in his arms. “Your can’t leave me now! I failed you all once again!”
