Wrong Start

“Meet Eyram, my…” Hesitating, Eyram shot him a scary glare. Still, he had no gut to say who she was to the girl that stood there watching them.
He’d never felt the need to lie or feel uncertain about their relationship. Those days staying with Mimi had been tough and good all the same. He’d come to like her as a wife and nothing more but his inability to be open about their relationship made things quite complicated.
“Meet Eyram. My girlfriend.”
Unbothered, she met her in the eye and replied. “Nice meeting you.”
Mimi, feeling down since she went to class that morning, lost her appetite and became moody till she came back from class and she’s been met with this which was not her problem.
Taking a last glance at Ibrahim, she walks away to her room for a quick shower. To get her mind off things. To relax and watch t.v till she hit the bed. That’s all she felt like doing that moment.
Laying down on her bed, she thought of her parents and how they were fairing. She wished at least, she would see her favourite sibling, her brother, and elder sister but was stuck in a marriage she never begged for.
Ibrahim treated her better now. But still, she longed for some kind of freedom. Her youth craved it and she knew sooner or later, she would give him what he desired.
Late during the night, she heard a knock on her door when she had fallen into a deep sleep.
Adisa entered, carrying a tray of food as she set it on a large table she’d brought with her.
“Madam..this is the food master asked to be brought to you.”
Staring at the tray of food, her inside turned. On the tray was plain chicken soup with rice and a bit of vegetable on the side. At first, she would have pounced on the food. Tonight was different. She’d lost her appetite.
“Madam, are you okay? Should I get you something else?”
Without waiting for an answer, she ran into the bathroom, with her palm closed around her mouth. Locking the door behind her, she threw up in excess amount on the tiled floor.
“Madam, are you okay?” Panicking, she tried opening the door which was locked from the inside. Pressing her ears close to the bathroom door, she asked if her madam was alright and contemplated if telling her master was the right thing when it could be a small issue.
Mimi finally came out, with her face soaking wet while she held her tummy. After taking her seat, she took the glass of water Adisa handed to her.
“Madam, you scared me. Should I call for master?”
“No, it’s nothing. Just a small allergy reaction,” she lied.
Wiping her lips with the back of her palm, she asked Adisa to take back the food.
“Then what are you allergic to? I can take it out when I’m cooking.”
“I will write it down on a piece of paper. No need to worry about that, and let this be between us.”
Adisa nodded before stepping out of her room with the food and table.
Wondering what could have gone wrong with the food, she found nothing. Maybe it was malaria. She reasoned. Taking off her clothes, she slept with nothing on.

A few minutes after she’s gone to bed, Ibrahim crept in, for fear of waking her up. Getting close to her, he was careful not to step on anything.
“Everything will be fine, Mimi,” he said before planting a gentle kiss on her cheek. That action was unexpected. Feeling the need to see her as much as he will want to see his son, he had come to her to make sure she was comfortable in her little space, and seeing her peacefully asleep made his heart swell.
This girl represented all that was pure and not corrupted in his eyes. With one last long look at her, he got out.
“Did you see the way she looked at me?” Eyram asked as soon as Ibrahim made his way into their room.
Their son was sleeping in the room next to them while they shared one bed.
“Eyram, do you want to make a deal out of this?” he asked calmly as he took off his clothes.
“Is she pregnant yet?”
He got under the sheets.
“No idea. Why don’t you sleep? We can talk about it tomorrow.”
The way he answered her now was different from how Ibrahim would have answered her. She felt something wrong with the way he spoke about Mimi. It was almost like a man in love. Still, she brushed it off and slept behind him with her front facing his behind.
It has been long since he last saw her and all he could do was sleep without touching her? It bothered her. “Will you not even touch me?”
As much as he did not want to hear that, she said it with such bitterness in her voice.
Turning himself to face her, he held her face in his palm. It was smooth and soft. His thumb brushed gently on her lips before crushing his lips to hers. They held unto each other, kissing and touching till Ibrahim broke them apart.
Panting heavily, she asked. “What is it?”
“I’m sorry, cara. When is your period.” Getting two women pregnant is a choice he would never go for. He has to make sure, he’s not going to get two people pregnant. Surely, there’s protection but he didn’t trust himself with those things plus Eyram would do anything herself to get pregnant with him as she felt threatened by the girl.
“Let’s go to sleep..”
Leaving no room for argument, she laid back next to him with folded arms. Things were not going the way she wished them to go. Ibrahim kept defending Mimi. On top of that, he didn’t want to be touched by her after he’d been banging the girl.
She slept almost immediately after pondering over some matters.

The next day was tragic for Eyram. Her phone kept buzzing in the presence of Ibrahim who thought nothing of it. Asking about it will only mean he didn’t trust her enough to handle things on her own.
Mimi had already left for school in a hurry, without sparing a glance at any of them. She seemed to have accepted her fate to be the other lady but it was all soon to change as she had no idea of his intentions towards her.
Fast forward close to recess, she rushed into the washroom to throw up. Causing stares her way. The teacher, having the tiniest bit of what to do, called the headmistress who asked that she be brought to her discreetly.
Mimi stood in front of Mrs. Williams, fidgeting with her fingers.
“You know what it is. Am I right?”
Shaking her head, she answered.
“No madam. I just think that I have caught malaria.”
She nodded thoughtfully.
“Alright. Take a seat behind my office. I will call Mr. Ibrahim and inform him now.”
Having no choice in the matter, she did as Mrs. Williams instructed.
Ibrahim received a call from her school while feeding Saeed. He’d decided to skip work and spend some time with his family.
After receiving the call, one thought popped into his mind. She’s pregnant. Otherwise, why will she throw up and have all the symptoms her mistress reported.
His heart swelled with pride and love for the unborn child which has not even reached the fetus stage.
“What is it? It seems to be good news.”
“I’m not certain yet, babe. I will have to confirm first.”
Giving Saeed a peck, he rushed to his bathroom for a quick bath and proceeded to the school, leaving Eyram confused and in the dark about who and what it was.
In the mistress’s office, they talked for a while before Mimi was permitted to go home with Ibrahim.
“Mimi,” he smiled sweetly to her that her heart did a flip flop.
“Go with me to the hospital. I have to confirm if you’re pregnant. Whatever the result, you don’t have to worry. Everything will be fine.”
Her eyes widened at the thought of being pregnant. If the result came out positive, he may get what he wanted.
A feeling of peace and calm washed over her. She’s been praying for this for so long and God chose to surprise her at an unexpected time.
Subconsciously, she stroked her belly as if she knew what the results will be.
