THE LAST KISS
EPISODE 11
Alicia is lost in a story when the doorbell sounds.
She hurries downstairs to check on who it might be.
She looks through the hole in the gate and is thrilled to see her best friend Naa Dede Amanquah at the gate.
And then she hurriedly opens the gate for her to drive in.
Naa stops the car in the middle of the driveway and gets down in a flash.
She throws her arms around her best friend in a bear hug.
“OMG, I can’t believe you are here. Weren’t you supposed to be coming next week? “
“Yea, yea! We had to cut our tour of the Northern Region short. Something came up and Nii Nortey was urgently needed back here.”
“I’m so glad you are here Naa. I’ve missed you loads!”

“Meeting the boys for the monthly golf challenge.”
“And you are here, why? Don’t you always go with him?”
“Yes, I do but I’m not too well and I feel kind of done in!”
“Ah, don’t be boring. You still have to be there for him. Who would cheer him on, huh? Get up and let’s go. I won’t allow you to be this uncaring.”
Naa tries to pull Alicia inside the house to get changed.
Alicia sees the ring for the first time.
“Naa, is that what I think it is? “
“Yep. Nii proposed two weeks ago in Tamale. But we will talk at length about it. Right now, I need to get you to the gulf club. Let’s get going already.”
“Do I really have to go? I’m not in the mood.”
“When did you become such a spoilt brat. When you were dating Curtis you went to every one of his games, you wanted to be with him every second of the day, why stop now huh? Is it because you are married to him? Madam, your husband needs your every support even in the little things. You have to act sharp or he’s going to get attention from someone else and he might like it. Get changed now or I’m dragging you dressed like that to the club.”
“Curtis is not like that. Besides, it’s only this once.”
“Curtis is human, you should not forget that. He needs your time, he needs to feel wanted and loved too. He’s not going to get that when all his friends will be there with their lady companions. I personally don’t like it when women start to take things for granted because they are married. Be smart girlfriend, staying married is hard work. It’s when you always put your partner’s interest first that you rock at it. Go get changed and let’s move.”
“And when did you become a marriage counsellor. You have no idea what bridges I’m crossing right now.”
Naa looks at Alicia closely, looking for a reason to make her believe Curtis was mistreating her.
It’s true she’s lost just a tiny bit of weight but there are no signs of physical abuse. Curtis has always been a gentleman and she can’t convince her otherwise.
“Alicia, is Curtis maltreating you? “
“Hell no. Why would you even think that?”

“Then complain to me later. I’m waiting for you in the car.”
Alicia gets changed and the two friends leave for the clubhouse in Naa’s car.
“You were telling me about the ring, Naa. I want to hear it?”
“Oh, where do I start? Nii and I visited the Mole Park that day and were relaxing at the poolside of a luxurious hotel when he walks to me with two glasses of champagne. I asked what the occasion was and he tells me it is to celebrate us. He told me it was his way of letting me know he loves me and will always do.
We drank to it and just as I drained my glass I saw something sparkle in the glass. I started complaining that there was something in my glass and that it was not clean. I wanted to go and cause a scene for the hotel’s carelessness. Then he told me he put it there.
I took a second look and there it was in all its glory.
That it was his way of asking me to be his wife. I was totally dumbfounded. I was beginning to think he didn’t love me enough to settle down with me. He took the ring and pulled me to my feet and put it on my hand after I said Yes to his proposal. It was so romantic.”
“Wow, congratulations!”
Naa pulls into the car park of the gulf club.
Curtis is having a bad game.
Nothing seem to be working for him.
He’s lost the first game in the tournament.
The second one is not going too well either.
He is worried and distracted, thinking he behaved selfishly leaving Alicia when she was at her low.
He is so helpless watching Alicia suffer so much.
With all his heart he wishes there was something he could do to help her live with the reality and move on.
He has monitored her phone to see if his mother will still torment her after their little talk and so far nothing has caught his attention.
His mom had been so surprised by Curtis’ fury she had been speechless. She tried in her desperation to persuade his son to reason with her and see the danger he was in as long as he stayed with Alicia and that was what broke Curtis’s back.
He really lashed out at his Mom for the first time and after he was done, his mom looked at him as if he was a perfect stranger to her.
Curtis is at the starting point ready for the tee off when he sees a car enter. He focuses on the ball and then tightens his grip on the club.
“What up with you dude, marriage took your swag or what. Stop behaving you are courting the ball. We ain’t got all day!” his best friend, Omar shouted.
Curtis turns in his direction and sees Alicia and Naa taking a seat behind Omar and his girlfriend. He smiles and takes at shot at the ball.
The tournament ends with Omar as the winner for the first time.
The three friends and their companions decide to have lunch to celebrate Omar’s win.
Omar is a chatterbox. The win has obviously gone to his head.
It is not like one can blame him, he’s been trying for the past three years to defeat Curtis and today that dream became a reality.
He takes every opportunity to brag about his win and tries to put Curtis down.
Curtis is not sure if he is doing that just to impress his fiancée or there is more to it.
He, on the other hand, is thinking about Alicia. He is aware she was going to be stressed because she would have to tell Naa what’s been going down the bridge in her absence. They’ve been best friends since childhood.
Kobby, another childhood friend of Curtis remarks that Alicia is looking pale and teases Curtis of bullying the poor girl in bed so much to get her pregnant so soon.
Everybody looks at her to confirm Kobby’s statement.
Alicia looks away and Curtis reacts by telling them to stop their nonsense.
“You guys should back off. Alicia is not pregnant.”
“Then how do you explain the paleness and the weight loss. I may not be married but I see a pregnant woman when I meet one. There’s no way in hell you will convince me otherwise. Tell us the good news and let’s toast to it, after all it is good news or you are dreading her breasts sagging as a result of childbirth. I know you love firm boobs.”
“Lay off Kobby, I didn’t bring Alicia here for you to make her uncomfortable.”
Naa is quiet.
Somehow there is a lot of sense in what Kobby is saying but why would Alicia keep it from her. They’ve been in touch and she is sure Alicia would have mentioned it if she were pregnant. She knows she loves kids. What she did not understand is Curtis’s reaction.
She wonders if Alicia took seed and lost it. That could be the only reason for Curtis’s defensive behaviour.
She glances over at Alicia and sees that tears have formed in her eyes. She is trying so hard not to break down.
Curtis has seen it too and reaches for Alicia’s hand.
“Guys, sorry we can’t stay for long. Alicia is not very well but not for the reasons you are speculating. I will see you all around.”
“Just like that? You can’t grasp the fact that you lost, can you? Why are you so touchy anyway? You are behaving like a woman and it’s not funny.” Omar states rather harshly.
All the women present except Alicia take offence by Omar’s statement and asks for an apology.
Curtis is on his feet urging Alicia to get to her feet too.
“Curtis, I don’t think we can hide the truth from them any longer. Sooner or later, they are going to know so I wouldn’t mind letting them in on my little secret. If it’s okay with you, I wouldn’t mind telling them the truth right now!”
Curtis looks at Alicia and she smiles.
Alicia pulls him down to sit beside him.
“Guys, you have to forgive Curtis for being touchy. It’s not easy finding out your wife has a life-threatening illness just months after your marriage. He’s been a real angel and I’m grateful someone like him came my way. The truth of the matter is I was diagnosed HIV positive and it been a most trying time for us.”
“What?” Naa is the first to react.
Around the table is absolute silence now.
Every eye turn to Curtis as if waiting for him to deny what Alicia has just said.
“Alicia, you don’t joke with things like that. Tell me this is not true.”
“Naa, that is my truth. I don’t know how or when I got it but I have HIV. The doctors say it’s in the early stages and if I take good care of myself, I could live a long healthy life like everyone else. Really sorry to crush your party, Omar. And one more thing, thankfully, Curtis is not infected.”
Naa is shaking her head now.
“No, no, no! This can’t be. Alicia please, no!” Naa says and gets to her feet.
“Come here my dear friend, why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to disrupt your vacation. You had looked forward to it for such a long time.”
“You must have suffered a lot and to think that whiles I was having the time of my life you were here struggling with something like this. Oh, my God why, why Alicia?”
The two friends hug as tears fall down their faces in torrents.
