Temi scowled slightly when the girl walked forward with a covered basket held in the crook of her right hand.
She stopped midway into the room and looked frankly at him. He sat up slowly and looked at her in the light of the lantern.
“You’re naked, sir,” she said, almost breathlessly.
She was a tall, curvy girl wearing a skirt, white blouse and sandals. Her hair was plaited into many long braids cascading from her head to her shoulders. Her face was oval and elfin-like, beautiful in a way.
“Yes, I am,” Temi replied. “It is a bit hot in here.”
“Yes, it is, because the windows are shut,” she said with obvious discomfort. “You need to open the windows and let the air in. The White Kombas can’t enter the room, because it is a taboo for them to attack anyone in a shelter. You don’t have to be scared of them.”
“I am not scared of them,” Temi said slowly. “I just didn’t see the windows as you say.”
He stood up, and she gasped as if startled, and suddenly turned her back to him.
“What’s the matter with you?” he asked, puzzled. “Indeed, you’re behaving in a puzzling kind of manner. Perhaps, you find me unattractive, in a way?”
“You’re naked, sir!” she said in a rush.
“Why, I can’t get naked, lady?” he asked.
“No…yes!” she said, obviously flustered and getting more agitated.

“No, yes, what does it mean?” he asked, deeply puzzled. “Your manners are sorely confusing, to say the least.”
“You can get naked when you’re alone, or with your betrothed, sir,” she said shakily. “But not when there are girls around!”
“Ah!” Temi said suddenly, his hand flying to his forehead and rubbing it rapidly. “Unless marriage! Someone said that to me…some time ago…can’t remember! Earthly maiden? Nepi? Napi Hejin?”
“Please, there’s a cloth on the bed,” the girl said. “You should cover yourself.”
“I certainly wouldn’t cover myself!” he said indignantly. “Not when I feel so hot already! If it bothers you that much why don’t you exit the room?”
“Then perhaps you should take a cold bath, sir, and open the windows!”
“Bath, what is that?” he asked in a puzzled voice.
She turned to face him then, her face burning as her eyes looked down at him, and the quickly came to his face.
“You don’t know how to take a bath?” she asked, also puzzled.
“No! And stop talking to me as if to a child, please,” he said indignantly. “I was kept at a place, a hidden secret place, and I just came out. You’re the first people I’m seeing.”
She began to breathe hard, and her tongue slowly went round her full, beautiful lips.
“Ah, sir,” she whispered. “So, you’ve never…felt the pleasures of being in an otu?”
“Otu?” he asked. “What’s that? Sounds nasty!”
She was breathing hard and perspiring softly around her face.
“You put your amu in a girl’s otu…you’ve never done that before?”
“You speak strangely, woman,” he said and yawned. “I do not comprehend whatever you’re seeking to imply.”
Her eyes roamed his face feverishly to ascertain he was not just making fun of her, and then she nodded and quickly put her basket on the table. She moved to the windows and opened them, letting in a breeze of air.
“Ah, that is better,” Temidayo said, moving toward the window to catch the blast of cold air.
The girl opened another door near the bed and went inside, closing it behind her. Temi stared at the door, and then at the front door. He wondered if that door also led to another corridor.
He dismissed it and gazed out the window at the darkness beyond. The White Kombas were still out there because he could hear their groans and the clashing of their knife-like teeth. Wrath filled his young heart as he remembered them devouring the horses again, and he wished he could just go out there and tear them all up to pieces.
After a while, he heard the door opening again, and he turned.
The girl was standing in the doorway, trying hard to keep a straight face as she took in his nakedness. Her lips opened slightly, and her breathing seemed to come quickly.
“Your bath is drawn, sir,” she said in a strangely unsteady voice. “Please, come and take a bath.”
He scowled at her.
“My name is Temi,” he said softly. “Stop the sir-sir thing. And what is this bath?”
She moved slowly toward him, and then she took his hand.
“Please, come and let me help you take a bath,” she said.
The moment she touched him he gasped, as the image of another face flashed in his mind’s eye, the beautiful oval face of a young girl…
“Niji…Neji Heli!” he whispered, feeling a great headache, but the image disappeared almost immediately, and he allowed the girl to lead him through the door into a smaller room where lanterns were also lit.
It was a pleasant bathroom.
The floor was tiled, and there were racks with towels and a neat ceramic water closet. There was also a large oval-shaped ceramic bath which was half-full with perfumed water.
“Please, get into the bath, Temi,” she said, still breathing irregularly.
“Into that bowl of water?” he asked, scowling.
“Yes, please,” she replied, a little too quickly.
“What is your name, if I may ask?” he asked.
She stood in front of him and looked into his eyes.
“I’m Chioma,” she replied demurely.
“Very beautiful name, Chioma,” he said. “But tell me, why must I get into a bowl of water?”
“We bath in water and soaps to remove the dirt from our bodies,” she said in an unsteady voice. “It also makes…it will make the heat you’re feeling go down.”
“Ah!” Temi said, nodding. “That makes sense.”
He moved to the bath and slid into the cool, perfumed water.
“Oh, this is nice, real nice!” he said.
Chioma smiled as she slowly held the hem of her blouse and drew it over her head. She pulled down her skirt quickly, and then she stood there, wearing a white bra and pink lacy panties.
Temi looked at her, scowling, and finding the sight of her without most of her clothes suddenly appealing.
“Ah!” he said suddenly. “I’m short of breath when you took off your clothes.”
She nodded as she slowly came toward the bath.
“Yes, it happens, Temi,” she whispered.
She knelt beside the bath and reached for a white webbed object.
“And what’s that?” he asked, still unable to take his eyes off her.
“This is a sponge, Temi,” she said, and slowly rubbed it over his chest. “It scrubs the dirt away from our bodies when we put water and soap in it.”
“It is indeed pleasant,” Temi said appreciatively.
She scrubbed him gently, her face concentrated.
She dipped her hand into the water, and passed it gently across his chest, gently touching his nipples, causing him to shudder, and then her hand passed sweetly over his chiselled belly, across his legs, and then she finally passed it across his amu and gripped it gently.
“Ah!” he moaned softly. “I like that. It is…it is most enjoyable, Chioma.”
“I know, Temi, I know,” she whispered hoarsely.
She continued to caress him under the water, and his eyes narrowed as the desire slowly built up in him.
“What is happening?” Temi asked suddenly with much alarm. “The amu…the amu…it is swelling, Chioma, and it is expanding…what’s wrong with it?”
And his voice is almost a scream!
