Ayaka Nsugbe nodded appreciatively.
“That is indeed the roots of the evil tree giving us shade,” he said, almost sadly. “However, what the Grand Oracle didn’t – or, maybe, couldn’t – show you was what happened to the Lords and Ladies of the Throne after the horrible murder of your father.”
“And who, if I may ask, were the Lords and Ladies of the Throne?” Temi enquired.
“Again, an insightful question,” Ayaka answered. “You see, the Dayo Empire is very huge and prosperous. The kings of Dayo, your father included, could not possibly be everywhere at once, and so the empire was divided into Clans, and each Clan was ruled by a Lord, or a Lady. After your father’s death, Temitayo Anubi, on the direction of Leke Olugbade Bally, killed almost all the Ladies and Lords of the Throne because all of them were loyal servants of King Demi. The Clans totalled one hundred, and in the end, only six Lords and four Ladies managed to escape the wrath and scourge of Temitayo Anubi’s vengeance!”
“Goodness me!” Temi breathed, horrified. “He killed ninety people?”
Ayaka nodded sadly.
“He wanted to kill all one hundred, but Jhon Moziz helped ten of us to escape, and the ten were led to this hidden Haven, and the ten became The Keepers!” he continued. “You must remember that the Grand Oracle was trapped in the Rock of Redemption in the Dayo Square, but he managed to create this hidden haven for us.”
There was a great silence in the room, and then Ayaka Nsugbe reached for a glass of water at his elbow and sipped it to wet his dry throat.
“So there we were, just a handful of survivors of the worst scourge that has ever befallen Dayo,” he continued. “A few Keepers, a few warriors, and a few groups of people who were King Demi’s friends. We all settled here. However, as the years passed by, we became more and more worried because Temitayo Anubi and Leke Olugbade Bally represented huge threats.
We became aware of their evil plan to make Temitayo marry Princess Uvbi Akenzua when she turns twenty-four, and by that act he could be able to access the DayoSword and open portals for Leke Bally to move into the outside world with his evil hosts of demons and feed on innocent humans, turning the world into a mourning ground filled with evil lost souls. Temitayo Anubi would also have great power to extend his rule of horror over Dayo and kill this great land.
Perhaps, the greatest threat of all was the olive branch on the Rock of Redemption which was slowly losing its leaves. If the last leaf falls, Dayo would just collapse into dust! We, therefore, needed to save Dayo and the rest of the world from the evil hands of Temitayo and Leke Bally.”
“I can understand that,” Temi said, horrified. “Temitayo and Leke have to be stopped at all costs!”
“Yes, that is the exact bleak picture we are faced with,” Ayaka said with a sigh. “Remember, we didn’t know that Queen Kelly Philip had given birth to a son. We also didn’t know that the Grand Oracle Jhon Moziz had sent you out of Dayo to a strange land. Jhon Moziz was silent for a long time after creating this place and bringing us here. We thought after some time that he had finally died inside the rock.”
There was a great silence in the room now as, once again, they all looked very carefully at Temidayo, who had a sudden premonition that something quite heavy was about to be said.
Ayaka Nsugbe rubbed a hand across his face.
“We are faced with grave danger, Prince Temidayo,” he said at last. “We possibly couldn’t wait for the last leaf to fall from the olive branch, and we definitely couldn’t let Temitayo Anubi marry Princess Uvbi Akenzua and lay his hand on the Royal DayoSword. As I said, we didn’t know you existed, and so we consulted a Seer because we thought Jhon Moziz was dead. The Seer told us that indeed this horrible time in the history of Dayo was prophesied a long time ago. However, the Seer said an heir to the throne with a strange thing in his right breast would be chosen to deliver Dayo and the world from the evil hand of Leke Olugbade Bally.”
Temi scowled suddenly with worry.
“What?” he enquired numbly. “The man to confront Leke Olugbade Bally would have a strange thing in his right breast? How can you know of such a thing? And what sort of thing did the Seer mean?”
There were low murmuring around the table, and Ayaka Nsugbe nodded.
“Wise questions indeed, my Prince,” he said, his voice serious. “As I said, we didn’t know our Queen Kelly Philip had a son. We only knew she had a daughter, and so we began to look for this strange leader who would deliver us. You see, your father, the late King Demi, had another son. I don’t think the Grand Oracle Jhon Moziz told you that you have an older brother, did he?”
Temi sat forward, his young handsome face filled with sudden shock.
“I have a brother?” he asked hoarsely.
“Well, yes, but a half-brother,” Ayaka Nsugbe said quickly. “Actually, when your father was very young, around your age now, he had not yet met your mother. Because he was a prince, he was often bathed by royal female servants. One of them seduced your father, and she became pregnant. She was sent far away by your grandmother because she was pregnant for the prince out of wedlock. Your grandmother gave her a lot of money, though. King Demi looked for her when he became king, but by then it was too late, and he couldn’t find her. She gave birth to a son, and called him Daniel Godwin, after her grandfather.”
“So I have a half-brother called Daniel Godwin?” Temi asked, his voice shocked.
“Yes, you do, my Prince,” Ayaka Nsugbe continued. “We were desperate. Under Dayo customs, a royal son born outside wedlock couldn’t be considered as an heir to the throne under any circumstance. However, considering the danger facing us, we had to look for him, and we found him. We were preparing him to challenge for the royal DayoSword. The moment we thought he was ready, and we were getting ready to send him to the Dayo Square to get the DayoSword, the Grand Oracle Jhon Moziz came and told us that Daniel Godwin was not the chosen one. He said King Demi had a son, and then he told us about you. And so, finally, he has brought you to us.”
The news really shook up Temi as he stared at them with shock written all over his face.
“Please, let me understand this,” he said slowly. “You’re telling me that when my father was a young man, he made a woman pregnant. This woman was driven away and gave birth to a boy called Daniel Godwin. Since there was a horrible time going on, you traced this woman and found her son Godwin, my half-brother, whom you trained to go for the DayoSword, but Jhon Moziz came along and told you Daniel isn’t the chosen one, and that for a fact, I am the chosen one?”
Again there were low murmuring in the room.
“That about sums it up, Prince Temi,” Ayaka Nsugbe said quietly. “We tried to reason with Jhon Moziz, telling him the time was too near. In less than eight months Temitayo Anubi would marry Princess Uvbi Akenzua, and we couldn’t possibly train you in all areas before that time, but he insisted Godwin isn’t the rightful heir but you. He was adamant you’re the Chosen One.”
There was now a tense silence in the auditorium.
Temi felt so useless and so out of place suddenly, and for a moment he didn’t know what to say.
“Prince Temi, would you please stand up?” Ayaka said, and Temi slowly got to his feet. “Now, kindly take off your shirt.”
Temi scowled.
“Why?” he asked, confused.
“The Seer we consulted spoke of the Chosen One having a strange thing in his right breast,” Ayaka said, almost apologetically. “We just want to ascertain if indeed, you have such a thing.”
Temidayo took a deep breath, and then he slowly removed his shirt. He stood facing them, a very fine specimen of manhood, his broad chest covered with beautiful hair.
But, his body was perfect and unmarked, except for the birthmark of a roaring lion on his right shoulder.
One by one The Keepers stood up and came to inspect him, and they began to look troubled as they took their seats again. Ayaka Nsugbe sighed greatly, and then he spoke quietly.
“You do, indeed have a mark, the mark of the lion on your shoulder, and we know King Demi, indeed, had a similar mark!” Ayaka Nsugbe said in a worried voice. “This only proves that you’re indeed King Demi’s son. But the Seer said the mark will be in the right breast, and there is nothing on your right breast. Danny, please step up,” he said.
Temi turned and saw that a huge, bald man in a warrior’s uniform had gotten to his feet and approaching the table. He was very huge and muscular, like a mini-giant.
Although he was bald, he had a thick growth of beard and mustache. His eyes were filled with hatred as he glared at Temi.
