JAMES shakes his head in pain. It’s not that he doesn’t want to share his story, but the pains are just too much.

Tears come in eyes and quickly he wipes it!

FLASHBACK: JAMES’S NARRATION

LOCATION: THE NORTEY’S FAMILY RESIDENCE.

The family is gathered in a big hall. Uncles, Aunties, Nieces, Nephews and the Family Head are all around! Little James is there too!

Successfully the two families have organized a befitting funeral for the late MR. and MRS. NORTEY!

The two families are now discussing the aftermath of the funeral; the profit or loss!

As the discussion continues, a knock is heard on the door! One of the young men stands and approaches the door! All eyes are on him now. Perhaps everyone wants to know who is at the door!

The young man seems to be blocking the stranger from entering! He speaks with the stranger for some minutes and closes the door! He walks to where the family head and whispers something into his ears!

The family head replies in the same manner and beckons on the man to open the door for the stranger!

Now the stranger enters and all eyes are on her! She greets the people and she is offered a seat. She’s a young beautiful woman. From her dressing, you can easily detect she is a lawyer! Probably she’s here to read the Will of the late SAMUEL NORTEY!

She is given the chance to address the people. She takes a file from her bag and it is sealed. Carefully, she opens the seal and starts reading what’s on the paper! After she is done, she takes her leave!

And there, the enmity started! Almost everything in the will was given to JAMES!

FAMILY HEAD

(Sighs)

As it is now, we all are clear that the properties of the late SAMUEL NORTEY are for his only son James. The heir to the throne. But the child is very young and cannot manage all these companies at this tender age. What should we do about that?

OBENG ATOBRAH, James’s uncle sits there quietly. He also happens to be a friend of the late SAMUEL NORTEY. His hands are on his jaws and it is pretty sure he is thinking! He taps his foot continuously on the floor!

The greed in his eyes in incomparable! And it’s pretty sure he will offer himself to take care of James in order to take the boy’s possessions all for himself!

He is 55 years old, married with two kids! Now is the time! The time to enjoy!

He smiles and clears his throat! He addressed the family!

OBENG ATOBRAH

My dear kinsmen, you know I have been quiet all this while waiting for my time to talk! Every single soul present here knows Samuel and I were great friends! And for that reason, my family and I will take care of James! I will care for him as my own child and provide him everything he wants!

There is silence in the room! Intentionally, he didn’t mention taking care of James’ properties as well! He knew his plan! And he was pretty sure that by hook or crook it will surely work!

The family head stands and readjusts his cloth! And now he faces OBENG ATOBRAH with a serious face!

FAMILY HEAD

OBENG will take care of James together with the child’s properties! And when the boy is matured enough to manage it on his own, you will not dare deny him his rights! I hope it clear enough. I’m done!

The meeting is over! And the two families go their separate ways! Still, James has not recovered from his wounds! He still cannot believe his parents are dead! He is broken hearted! No amount of words can console this young boy.

JAMES moved in with OBENG’S FAMILY and he felt at home. He thought he had it all. The first few months he stayed with them was amazing! The love, care, pampering, everything was provided for him!

OBENG ATOBRAH did all these to make the other members know truly he can care for the child! Not knowing he had his reasons!

This continued for a year! And then he started showing his true colours! Gradually the attention, care, love drifted away!

JAMES would be easily punished for the little thing he does! The least thing he does he would be scolded!

JAMES NORTEY

My life started to take a turning point. I had no one to confide in! The others knew I was treated well. And I would not dare tell them the situation at hand! We lived in a big house with everything yet I was forced to fetch water from outside! I was forced to eat once a day! I did the cleaning and washing in the house.

At age 11 I was more of a maidservant to them! They treated me like shit! He never really cared about my feelings! They rained insults at me, mistreated me! What always broke my heart was when my uncle speaks ill of my parents! My Mama! My Paps! I was forced to drop out of school because they said they had no money!

He stops speaking, raises his head up and shakes it in pain!

The people are shocked! LAWRENCE AKUTEY’s mouth is wide open and he is confused. Why is the world so unfair! So unjust!

JAMES looks into the camera and his tears do not seize to stop! And when he speaks, he voice tremble! There is so much pain in them!

JAMES NORTEY

(With a shaky voice)

You know, I thought why don’t I leave home! I couldn’t take it more. You know, the work I did in their house, I could do the same somewhere and get paid! It sounded a good idea for me! But how do I leave home? Where am I going? Where would I stay? Some part wanted me to stay! But the other part didn’t support the idea of staying! I was in a state of dilemma. If I stay who would be my saviour? I..I…

He cannot speak anymore! He is choked by his own tears! His body is shaking! He bends his head down and cries to avoid the embarrassment!

Tears come into the people’s eyes! The women are weeping and wailing and the men wipe the tears in their eyes!

The world is shocked at this man’s story! His pain, they cannot understand! His pain, they cannot share with him!

JAMES NORTEY raises up his head, his eyes are red! He takes a hankie and blows his nose into it!
