CHAPTER 1
The unbearable pain buffeted Prince Temi as he cradled the lifeless bodies of Nneka Okez and Daniel Godwin in his arms. His crushed face was filled with unbearable pain as he wept, ravaged from within, his inner grief foul and corrosive!
His mother and sister, who were seeing him for the first time, knelt on either side of him, trying in vain to comfort him. Princess Uvbi Akenzua’s eyes shifted a little though, and when she saw Okakuo Agbons, it finally dawned on her that at least, a part of the horror story was going to be beautiful.
Okakuo came to stand beside her and put a gentle hand on her shoulder, and she covered it with her free hand.
It was around that time that Temidayo saw Rose and Ziloux still on the ground near the entrance to the White Lands. In the midst of the pain suffusing him, his wrath knew no bounds as he growled deeply in his throat and with one swift movement, he got to his feet and drew one of the Swords of Destiny.
The people around him were taken by surprise by his sudden movements, and barely saw him moving, but a moment later he was standing in front of Rose with the sword raised high to cut off her head.
“No, my Lord, don’t!” Jhon Moziz screamed as he suddenly disappeared from where he was standing and promptly appeared in front of the prince, putting his body between the sword and Rose. “Please, you can’t harm her!”
“And why not?” Temi grated painfully as his tears fell in torrents. “And why the hell can’t I slit the throats of these two betrayers?”

“Look around you, my Lord!” Jhon Moziz said in a trembling voice. “The Empire of Dayo is in the Apocalypse now! Every living thing and structure has turned to stone, except a very few individuals who have been saved! Everybody left alive has been saved for a reason, my Lord.”
“And what reason could the Creator of All Things have for saving the lives of these two miserable wretches?” Temi asked darkly as he tried to step around Jhon Moziz.
“Every one that has been saved is needed to break the curse of the Apocalypse, my Lord!” Jhon Moziz said desperately. “I may not know the roles they would play, but from now until Dayo is restored, nobody who has been saved should die! Any deaths would result in terrible consequences that would greatly hinder our ability to break the curse of the Apocalypse, my Lord. So, until Dayo is free, you can’t touch any of them.”
Temidayo glowered as he looked down with such hatred and venom in his eyes that Rose cringed and could not look into his eyes.
“You keep these two filthy wicked people from me,” he grated wrathfully. “As the Creator is my witness, the day they cross my path is the day they cease to live!”

He turned away with tears coursing down his face and sheathed the sword. He looked down at the serene expression on Nneka’s face, and then he sighed shudderingly.
“She was carrying my son,” he whispered.
The Queen took her son in her arms then, for only the second time in his life, the first being when he was born. He held her tightly, and the tears that racked his body was not the happy tears of meeting his mother again, but the tragic tears of losing the woman he loved, and his unborn son.

A very solemn burial was held for Daniel Godwin and Nneka Okez in the Royal Cemetery officiated by M. B. Twaki.
Prince Temidayo was flanked by his mother and sister, and he waited until the stones had been rolled across the tombs before turning away. He was no longer crying, but his face had become bleak and foreboding, and he barely uttered a word to anyone in his grief.
He stormed into the palace almost immediately and marched to the main quarters in the western wing and locked himself in, making Jhon Moziz stare after him with a worried expression.
Queen Kelly looked at the Grand Oracle with concern.
“Is my son going to be fine, Grand Oracle?” she asked worriedly.
“He has to be, my Queen,” Jhon Moziz said with a grim face. “Only the Heir Apparent can redeem Dayo from the Apocalypse, so he has to get over his moroseness because, alas, we have sixty days before everything becomes unhinged and we all turn to eternal stones. Come, my Queen. I called a meeting with the Keepers and other people. We need to find a way out of this.”
The Queen followed the Grand Oracle to the gigantic conference room.
There was a giant glass topped and leather-edged conference table at one end on a slightly-raised pedestal. On the other side were other comfortable high-backed stuffed chairs.
The curtains were golden, raining down from the ceiling to the floor in a majestic tapestry of beauty. Along one wall were giant bookcases fronted with glass to keep out the dust from the precious books within.
Hanging from the high ceiling were exquisite bulb and candle holders. The room was comfortably cool from the air-conditioning. The Keepers, Emmanuel Suncity and Prosper Freeman were seated around the oval table, whist the warriors and other citizens from the Haven were sitting at the other side on the high-backed chairs.
Ziloux and his sister were sitting alone in one corner, and on Rose’s face was the most wretched of expressions, her cheeks still showing the whitish tracks of dried tears.

In the front row were Princess Uvbi Akenzua and Okakuo Agbons, holding hands and revelling in the pleasure of finding each other again.
They all got to their feet when the Queen entered, and Kelly Philip nodded to them with regal grace, climbed the short steps to the dais, and accepted a chair at the head of the table beside Ayaka Nsugbe.
“You may sit down now,” Jhon Moziz said brusquely, and all those present sat down.
The anxious eyes of the gathering rested on the astute Grand Oracle of Dayo.
“We have been hit by the dreaded Apocalypse, Grand Oracle,” Nsugbe Ayaka said softly. “This has never happened to Dayo, to us. We only heard rumours of it as we were growing up, rumours that the Apocalypse, if not resolved within sixty days, could become permanent. And we all know the implications of Dayo becoming a completely stone kingdom!”
“You speak true words Ayaka, son of Nsugbe,” Jhon Moziz said quietly but firmly, his voice carrying much weight. “For decades, since the first Dayans were created, we have become custodians and watchkeepers of the planet Earth.
We help resolve their conflicts, we send new technologies to them, and we go in there and cure them of the plagues and diseases they have no answer to. Should the great Dayan Empire perish under this Apocalypse, the planet Earth and all the Earthlings will perish in no time! And the dire consequences facing us is that every tick of a second pushes us closer to such a doomsday!”
There was great silence in the conference room as the horrendous truth dawned on them.
“And what, if I may ask, is the best way to turn back the hands of doom on the Dayan race?” Prosper Freeman asked.
“The Olive tree represents the spirit of the Dayo Empire,” Jhon Moziz said sadly. “I had to force the last leaf to fall from the Olive because the evil hordes were coming through from the White Lands, and their presence here in Dayo would’ve meant death to everybody. However, the last leaf precipitated the Apocalypse.
To remedy it, we need to bring Dayo back to life by bringing a dead olive from the White Lands and planting it on top of the Rock of Redemption. Only then will the Apocalypse spell break. And this must be done within the first sixty days after the Apocalypse.”
There was a stunned silence in the room, a silence so profound that it grated on the ears by its loudness. It was a stunned Emmanuel Suncity who finally voiced out the terror they were all feeling.
“Did you say a dead olive plant from the White Lands within sixty days?” he asked shakily.
“Alas, that is so,” Jhon Moziz said as he sat down slowly. “According to my predecessor, there’s a place called The Desolates inside the White Lands where a single dead olive plant grows atop a hill. That dead olive must be transported back to Dayo and put on top of the rock.”
“Surely, that can’t be a solution!” Prosper Freeman said with horror. “Surely that would be a suicide mission! No human has ever gone to the White Lands and come back! That is the place of the dead! The great White Wall separates the living from the dead! Surely, what you’re saying can’t even be imagined, Honourable Grand Oracle!”
“Believe me, it is so,” Jhon Moziz said quietly. “And that is why this situation we have here is dire! Any man or woman who enters the White Lands cannot come back to the land of the living except if that man or woman has the royal Dayan blood.”
“And what does that mean?” Emma Tobi asked, still stunned.
“It means only a king, queen, prince or princess of the Dayan royal line can come back from the White Lands. Ladies and gentleman, that means only Prince Temidayo can enter the White Lands and bring back the dead olive.”
“We’re not talking about sixty days anymore, Grand Oracle,” Prosper Freeman said in a stunned voice. “We have gone seven days now since the Apocalypse. So, in the true sense of things, we have fifty-three days after this night to send the Prince to the White Lands. Now, if what you’re saying is true, it means that boy would be all alone in that land of the dead, because none of us can accompany him there.”
“That is correct,” Jhon Moziz said curtly.

“Oh, but that is so…so unacceptable!” Queen Kelly Philip cried in anguish. “I lost my husband for the sake of Dayo! And now that I have been reunited with my son for only ten days, after suffering unimaginable torture in the last eighteen years, you’re telling me I can lose my son again? Surely, Grand Oracle, you will have to go with him. If that is the only way to go!”
