EPISODE 30
And, in that split-second of Boat’s confusion, it happened!
Suddenly, a great wall of sizzling fire-like energy shot up between the body of the baby and the Death Angels, separating them!
Boat stared with incomprehension as the scene on the other side of the sizzling wall changed! He found himself looking at a strange wooden cabin in the middle of a wooded area! The spawn – no, his son – was now running toward the wooden cabin!
The Death Angels raised their swords again and the fires grew bigger.
“No, please!” Yaw Boat said sharply. “If it is God’s will…do your worst. If, however, I have a say in this…let him go, please!”
He waited with bated breath as the two grim-looking and fierce angels waited, and then suddenly their swords lost their fires, and they disappeared instantly.
Boat almost fell on the ground from the relief!
The look in that little boy’s eyes had opened up a flood of love within his breast. If he had not seen that boy, he could have easily gotten rid of him, but the sight of the little baby holding out its arms to him, weeping inconsolably and almost calling out to be saved, was now etched deeply into Boat’s subconscious.
He knew there was a little lost human in there, a helpless soul calling for redemption. This had happened to Joe Boat, his own father! Boat had not been able to save him in his moment of indecision and incompetence, and the sheer weight of his guilt had never really ever waned.
If there was a way to save this baby – any way at all – then it was worth trying. At least it would be a sort of balm for his guilt, an unsuitable atonement, yes, but still a little relief could be garnered by that.
The rain, thunder and lightning had stopped on his side of the great wall of fire, but on the other side, where the baby was running, Yaw Boat could see that it was still raining with thunder, lightning and great gusts of wind!
The spawn had reached the wooden cabin now and for a moment it seemed as is he was going to enter, but he stopped and took a turn to the right, and still continued to ran hard, almost gliding over the ground with lightning feet until it came to a huge, silvery lake! It jumped high into the sky and came down on the lake!
Boat’s heart thudded hard for a moment as he expected the spawn to sink into the lake, but he did not. He landed on top of the lake and stayed on it, and then he turned slowly and faced Boat. On his forehead the white number of the beast glowed, and then slowly his face changed into that of the horrible Duke Swallows. He smiled evilly at Yaw Boat and then he held out his arms expressively!
And then Boat’s horrified eyes beheld a most terrifying sight! The spawn, still standing on top of the lake, began to grow again quite rapidly!
“Oh, God!” Yaw Boat whispered. “Nicole! He’s trying to kill Nicole!”
With a roar of fear Boat launched himself at the wall of fire, but he was repelled! He could hear Duke Swallows’ booming laughter in his ears as he launched himself again and again at the wall and was thrown back.
Yaw Boat raised his face to the heavens and screamed.
“My God, my Lord, why do You keep me away from that evil? Please, Lord, do not take her away from me, I beg of you!”
Duke Swallows boomed out his laughter again!
And when Yaw Boat looked at the evil entity, he saw that he had grown up considerably! He was now a most handsome elderly man with grey hair, moustache and beard!
“Enjoy your old hag, sport!” Duke Swallows screamed buoyantly and with great exuberance and fun. “Meet me in Hades if you dare!”
And then he turned his back on Boat and began to walk across the lake. There was a great mist on the lake now as the spawn walked, swirling up thickly around him.
“I will find you, Dukie!” Boat yelled into the wall. “I will find you, and I’ll fuck you up!”
Duke Swallows held up both hands again and stuck out his middle fingers at Boat, and then he disappeared into the mist, and suddenly the great wall of fire vanished, and the sight vanished.
And Boat suddenly found himself standing in the yard of Nicole’s house.
Ledi Pedi was still lying on the ground and bleeding profusely now. His eyes were almost closed as death quickly approached. Griffith and Anderson were kneeling beside him praying earnestly, and old Pastor Amoah was standing on the porch with an enraged expression on his face.
“Boat!” Ledi whispered weakly as his teeth chattered and tears came to his eyes. “Oh, thank you Lord! You saved him! Now, I can die in peace!”
The other men of God got to their feet with stunned looks as Yaw Boat walked toward the porch. He stretched his right hand toward Ledi Pedi without even pausing.
“May the Lord heal your infirmities if I be the servant of the Most High God!” he said.
The bullets simply plopped out of Ledi’s body and his wounds closed over, but the blood still stained his body.
“Shit yeah!” Ledi cried suddenly and jumped to his feet. “Awurade meda wo ase! Owuo ye ya fucking! I won’t die today, no, I won’t die today as the Lord is my God!”
“He’s back!” Griffith whispered in a stunned voice. “He found his prayer!”
They were rushing towards Yaw Boat as he mounted the steps to the porch and found old Pastor Amoah blocking his path with his furious accusing eyes.
“I saw you, son!” he whispered with fury. “What the hell is wrong with you? That was the time to get rid of that evil piece of dirt! You had the power and the moment! And you messed up again!”
“Don’t start, please,” Boat said with exasperation. “That…that was my son!”
“Your son is gone!” Pastor Amoah roared. “He’s been taken over! The Duke needs that body to survive, to use with the Holy Relics and destroy Unblinds just to hinder the agenda of our Lord to save souls! The hour of destruction of Satan and his cohorts is near, boy! And because of that they mean to destroy as many as they can, and take as many as they can with them! You just let the Apocalypse happen simply because of a spawn that was not meant to live in the first place?”
“God created that baby out of my blood!” Boat said bitterly. “Oh, Lord, Pastor! Don’t make my guilt any greater! I saw him, saw his eyes, beheld his pain, felt his agony! What kind of a father would I be if I killed my own son without knowing if there is a way to save him?”
“Because he cannot be saved!” Pastor Amoah roared. “He is of evil, from his very birth, and destined for death!”
Boat looked at the man he loved and respected with bitter eyes.
“You’re forgetting I was also born a spawn, old man,” he said bitterly. “From the moment I was born, I was destined to rule the world of darkness and kill Unblinds, remember? I was marked for death too, remember? They killed my mother, and they fed me with evil concoctions and controlled my every movement and thought! They made me decadent for twenty-two years of my life, and made me live a life that was abhorrent and filled with debauchery, old man! But today, here I stand, a vessel for the Lord! Do not judge me, I beg of you, for the love of a father is strong!”
Pastor Amoah looked at him for a long time, and then his lips began to tremble and he nodded. He put a hand on Boat’s shoulder.
“Forgive me, son,” he said softly. “Your burden is great, and I do not want to add to it. But, I love you, and I saw the journey ahead of you, and I was scared. You need our support, and our prayers and our love.”
Boat nodded helplessly, and then he brushed past him and rushed into the living-room.
Nicole was lying in the long chair.
And she was a very old woman!
She was skinny and emaciated, her limbs gnarled and crooked! Her eyes were rheumy and filled with pus, her hair lank and fixed by tendrils to her skull-like head! Her mouth was folded in, and when she moaned with pain Boat saw that she just had two teeth in her mouth!
“Nic!” he whispered with horror and almost crashed to the floor but Ledi reached out and steadied him. They were all horrified as they stared at the skeletal remains of Nicole.
“What is happening to my baby?” Pastor Anderson cried with terror. “What is the meaning of this?”
“Duke tried to kill her with his angelic power combined with the Holy Relics!” Pastor Amoah said softly. “But, it is not his prerogative to take her life. He took maximum years from her, but she is still alive. If she is not saved soon, however, she will indeed die of old age.”
“But why?” Yaw Boat cried in anguish as he knelt beside Nicole and reached out for her hands. “She is not a sinner! She is glowing! Why must this happen to her?”
There was silence as Yaw Boat wept bitterly.
“I do not understand too, Yaw,” Eddie Griffith said softly. “We brought Nikolai’s body inside. An Unblind policeman would come and help us with procedure. I do not understand his death either. But, one thing I know for sure, Yaw, is that we will never completely understand the ways of the Lord. Sometimes our Father above allows things to happen for a reason.”
“This can’t be a reason!” Boat groaned in agony.
“Yaw!” Ledi said sharply. “Please. Do not blaspheme, not now. You need all the help you can get.”
Nicole could barely breathe. Her eyes flittered unseeingly in their sunken sockets, and as tears slowly rolled down the sides of her eyes, Yaw Boat clamped a hand to his mouth and wept powerfully.
“What must I do?” he whispered frantically. “You’re Seers! You see visions! How do I make this right?”
There was a stunned silence as they stared at each other. Pastor Nana Amoah sighed and walked to one of the chairs and sat down.
“Did you see anything, Pastor Amoah?” Griffith whispered softly. “What I saw…terrifies me, really terrifies me!”
“What did you see?” Yaw Boat groaned in agony as he stared at him and at Pastor Amoah. “Did you also see something, old man? What is it? Talk to me, please!”
Pastor Amoah looked at Boat with pity and spoke softly.
“Luke chapter sixteen, verse twenty-three. In Hades, where the rich man was in torment, he looked up and saw Lazarus by the side of Abraham. Verse twenty-six says, ‘there is a great chasm between us, so we cannot cross over to your side even if we want.’ My son, I’m scared of what I’m seeing.”
“Jesus!” Ledi whispered with horror. “Hades? A trip to Hades?”
Yaw Boat looked up sharply.
“Duke Swallows dared me to follow him to Hades if I dare!” he said coldly. “What does it mean? I thought Hades is Sheol or Hell, right?”
“A dark place, my son, a place of the dead, of the wailing souls,” Pastor Amoah said softly. “A place of the wicked. No Unblind ever crossed over to Hades and came back. It is not for the living, and not for the righteous. That was why you could not go through the wall of fire, Yaw. Because you’re clean and righteous.”
“I don’t understand you!” Boat cried, tormented. “I have to go to Hades to save Nicole?”
They were all looking at old Pastor Amoah as he leaned forward.
“Only you have been given the power to take Duke Swallows down, son, and he knows it,” Pastor Amoah said softly, but it was evident he was very scared. “He knows that twice he tried to kill you here, and you defeated him. And he knows he is no match for you here. He is in a dilemma. If he stays here, you can thwart his plans to live forever and wreak terror on Unblinds, even with the Holy Relics and the Spawn. But he cannot get rid of you here, because you’re powerful here.”
“Oh, my Lord!” Eddie Griffith said with horror. “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? There is only one place where God will turn His back on an Unblind!”
“Hades?” Pastor Anderson said, and Pastor Amoah nodded sagely.
“Yes, I’m afraid so,” Pastor Amoah said with pain. “Hades, with all its sin, with all its finality, represents an entity God cannot bear to watch. That’s the turf of Duke Swallows. So, he brings Nicole to the brink of death and takes Yaw’s son to Hades.”
“He wants to lure Yaw Boat to Hades?” Ledi asked with horror.
“Yes,” Pastor Amoah said. “To his own turf, and kill him there because Yaw would be vulnerable over there, obviously abandoned. And when he gets rid of Yaw over there, he would return here, and wreak the Apocalypse.”
“Show me the way to Hades!” Yaw Boat whispered grimly.
“You craze?” Ledi shouted with horror as he dropped to his knees beside Yaw Boat and pushed his shoulder. “Have you listened to anything they have said? That is not even a place for the living, buddy! It is a place for the unrighteous undead, for the deadly evil entities like Duke Swallows the fallen angel! You dare go there, you’re not coming back, ever!”
“And you cannot even enter there as a holy and righteous Unblind, son,” Anderson said with his lips trembling. “You need to be a sinner to go there! We must just forget about it, Yaw, and try to accept that we have lost Nicole!”
“No!” Boat cried sharply and shook his head as tears came to his eyes. “I don’t believe that! Impossible is nothing to God, remember? With God I can do all things because He strengthens me! Nicole is not dying!”
“Hades is spiritual, Yaw!” Griffith said with horror. “We don’t know where it is, or how to get there! And even if you go there, you’re not coming back! No, son! Better to cut the loss and accept you lost your son and this beautiful lady and wait for Duke Swallows to come back here, and deal with him.”
“I can do all things through God who strengthens me,” Yaw Boat said and got to his feet. “The route lies at that cabin, on that lake. He wants me in Hades, he will get me in Hades.”
